    Is this life imitating art, or the other way around? Would you believe I've just spent my Sunday sowing chillis, peppers, tomatoes and a second lot of onions (Boxing Day ones haven't all come through so second sowing...just in case). They're all now sitting in my own little makeshift 'germination station' in the spare room. First time trying it, but a hydroponic kit for Christmas has made me look differently at the whole heat and light thing for indoor growing. Then I sit down, with a well-earned cup of tea, to watch...and there's my Sunday, right there. Love it! It did make me chuckle. Really nice to have the little recipe interlude as well. Love the apron by the way!

    Cause you have a nice greenhouse you shouldnt of suffered too much with your peppers and tomatoes last year. Last year mine got hit with the rain and cloudy skies and it was a nightmare. I started mine off in march and got plenty of fruit but struggled to ripen them through the lack of sunlight and just constant rain. Im starting mine off tomorrow aswell just to get that extra time in incase our summer is just as bad as last year. Im in scotland aswell and it wasnt the best summer. Even our local gardening communities only got good crop from their peppers and tomatoes in their polytunnels. The ones outside where the same as mine. Im hoping if i start now ill get more ripe if its just as bad

  • @tattooedbeauty3201

    @tattooedbeauty3201

    6 ай бұрын

    @eliandkate where I put them was pretty sheltered tbh just not enough sunlight. The rain didn't give up for long enough for them to ripen. Shame as got plenty of fruit from them just not much was ripe enough for my liking as I don't mind unripe peppers and tomatoes just for certain dishes unripe tomatoes don't do as well in so ended up just eating them sour want some sweet ones this year. I need to try and pull some money together and work out my garden to fit a greenhouse. Between all the raised beds and the kids toys there's not as much space as I would like. Might be how I've got it set up though rather than the space as its all around the edges of the garden with a lawn in the middle for the kids and dog to run around but one sides completely cut off from what I can put there as always covered in brambles due to the next door closes as it's a 10foot metal fence with them taller than it so they grow in a lot

    Eli, I've had good results using an electric kettle to boil water and then pour it over the base material for my seed starting mix, which I do in a 5-gallon bucket. The key is to sterilize the peat/coir/other medium with plenty of boiling water. The mix will then be too wet, but it's perfect because I then add the vermiculite that I always use. Vermiculite soaks up the extra water well and keeps the mix very loose and fluffy.

    I did grow "micro" tomatoes, the flavour was great, the fruit wasn't tough. Going to do it again. I put in onions this week, pleased to see them up. Very cold this week, but before the cold hit, pulled in a fushia with huge bells on it. First flowers were 8 inches across! Unreal seeing them appear. Tried to keep Paprik peppers going, nope, gone. Still have 3 seeds left, they not cheap to buy.. 49th parallel, wet coast, mostly shade. Looking for other options to grow in shaded area.

    cool video, thanks. I have found your channel recently :). When would you sow your onions without any extra light latest? I have tried a few times with nothing to show at the end of the season. I can grow them from sets with no problem. But from seeds, I am either too early with leggy, spindly seedlings or too late to grow big enough onions. I live in Norfolk so a bit longer days than you guys. Many thanks.

I have got Bedfordshire champions onions sown on boxing day but may plant red barons as I have them. Do I need to pot on onions? I'm thinking I do. First time growing from seed. 😅 Your greenhouse looks fab with the lights. A lovely nod to Steve, and a top tip on growing from shop for me. Lights look great for the future recipes. 🌱 Happy growing, Jane .

    😂😂we had 20” of snow and this morning was -8*F. And you can’t feel your fingertips😂😂. It will be like this for a week and then back to 30s for who knows how long. I’m not sure how beneficial it is to start onions too early. Some start in January and I started last year February 6th. I had to give them at least 5 haircuts before setting out. They say they can handle frost, but they do get nipped back and that slows them down. So I’m not in too much of a hurry to start seeds and will actually count back from 2 weeks after suggested frost date plus germination time. Last year the last weekend of may was a killing frost even though it was 90s all month. The plants will catch up. The only thing I will try is a low tunnel over peppers to see if I can extend season. I’ve read to cut off all peppers for first month and it will allow plant to grow stronger and faster ripening crop. Z5, Wisconsin, US. 😂I think I brought a mouse in with opened potting soil after we dug carrots in the snow yesterday😂

    btw, I typically plant my seeds in 1/2 seed starter, 1/2 peat. I wont fertilize at all until my second set true leaves. AND once they get a couple inches, I typically repot from those small 1 inch cells, to larger 3 inch by 3 inch or 4 x 4. For the onion i do a big OVERseed rather thn into individual cells, I use the 4x4 by 2 inch deep and then, when I transplant outside, I pull them apart to individually transplant.
