Sowing tomato, pepper and dahlia from seeds in the greenhouse

It’s time to get seed sowing underway and we’re starting our first grow along with Eli by sowing four varieties of tomato, three varieties of dahlia and one bell pepper.
While I sow my seeds I can answer some of the questions you guys ask about using propagators, watering seedlings and which seed flats and module trays I recommend.
So join me in the greenhouse and get sowing with me.

    I've already started my onions and hot peppers. Tomatoes and sweet peppers I'll start the end of March- Minnesota has frost up until the first week in may so... I've got time! (poblanos, colossal jalapeños, Serranos, loads of shallot types and Ailsa Craig, blush, red Wethersfield onions). I do love my tomatoes and sweet peppers- Lesya, Ajvarski, yellow bell, Pink Berkley tomatoes along with pink whitmore, crimson king, and some new dwarf tomatoes that are still coming (to grow in my GreenStalk). Oh, I have at least 12 kinds of tomatoes! I'm dreaming about them since we have over 18 inches of snow on the ground... sigh!

    I have to say great video! I’ve been growing awhile and I’ve been questioning different pot sizes. I have a connected propagator tray and yes, it’s more for large production of one variety. It’s more to just germinate and pot up right away. This year using cell trays and 2” and 3” pots. Bottoms of milk jugs to condense all the onions. I need to conserve some room and beings it’s So Flipping Cold here I can’t justify heating the greenhouse yet. All winter our lows exceeded our highs until this lovely month they call March-it’s the worst month for me to get through and then they insist on this time change crap-UGH!! Anyhow😊I liked the 1010 size trays and found some on Amazon and they are so versatile. Still waiting for the Tidy Tray and sifter on back order. It’ll get here when I’m done😂. I have way too many celery seedlings so the rest will get grouped loosely into a milk jug bottom. Signed onions up for their 5th haircut today. And never using an open bag of soil again unless I sterilize it on the grill like you had done. I’ve dealt with not just gnats, but mildew and aphids as well. Aphids! Never had that before. So happy to find a ladybug in my window and gave it a job👏🏼👏🏼😁. Last week I did a water/peroxide soil drench and that kicked most problems along with sticky traps. So I was excited to see dahlias as I’m trying them for first time ever! And growing the Black Krim! I have probably a dozen tomato and pepper varieties I’m trying to find the perfect. Are you bagging the blossoms on the tomatoes you want to save seed from? I want to get to that point of finding best open pollinated varieties to start saving seeds. I was just informed I wouldn’t be getting a very tough climbing rose because of crop failure-it took me days to choose this rose😏 but what if that happened to be vegetable seeds? I grew oxheart once and think I have some left. I’m going to pre germinate the peppers to get a jump start and make sure I have 1 plant per cell this year and I’m not startling til April 1st otherwise it’s a jungle. Kate, So funny, I knew that someone would plant that mug up😂😂 Take care and I hope this weather passes SOON! So sick of winter. 9” of that white stuff last weekend.🙄😵‍💫

  • @eliandkate

    @eliandkate

    Not this year no. There’s a very long story but basically it would be too expensive to heat it just so I can grow early tomatoes etc. so I grow heaps over winter, but it’s all hardy greens that don’t need heat. For just now, I’ve got a heated propagator I can use when the temperature gets scary (like minus 6 the other day) but the plan this year is to grow without heat as much as possible, like I used to do when I had no option. I think after next week temperatures should be fine for the greenhouse. Means my plants will be slower growing than folk using heat or light (including indoors on window sills) but it’ll be cheaper 😂

    I just discovered your channel last week and have learned so much! Great videos! I am in the process of setting up a tree nursery within a prison (random I know) and its my first time growing trees from seed on a large scale. I assume all the basic principles that you are using here will apply to tree seeds too? We collected and processed our own seed in Autumn just past, so some will go straight into the ground, but others such as scots pine, blackthorn and cherry I am planning to sow in trays or root trainers (which I got from containerwise UK). I just dont want to kill my poor seedlings! Thanks! Aisling

    Thank you both for a great video. I have sown lots of seeds using the seed sowing mix you spoke about recently & so many more seeds have germinated this year. So thanks for that info. I am going to sow a RHS tomato Outdoor Girl and Tomato-Alicante, which I had great success with last year. I do have quite a few Dahlia tubers to pot up, but shall be sowing Dahlia variabilis 'Bishop's Children. Not having done a sow along before I'm dead excited. Is it worth investing in a heated propagator? I ordered the wrong item recently, ended up with a self watering set. It is blooming wet, windy and freezing down here at the moment, so not sure if a heated propagator or heat mat would be better?

    Hi. From Pittsburgh PA zone 6B. I’m a first time gardener. I’m going to have built a three layer cement block garden 4x16. I started my tomatoes. But I think I did it wrong. I put them in 3” pots that dissolve. Planted them in seed starter mix. Then watered. Now I think I over watered. The bottoms of the pots are damp. But the top is dry where the seeds are. Any advice? Love you two!

    there is no wrong Colette... we all do things differently and all have reasons for how we do it. I'd say for now while your seedlings are small, water little and often... LITTLE 😉, so maybe use a little bottle with a tiny hole in the lid and just water a little plash around the seedlings. You aren't trying to get all the compost wet. As the plants grow they'll gradually need more :D

    Yay! Been waiting all week for your video. Love the humour and love sharing in the excitement of the new growing season, thank you! I don't have a greenhouse so I won't be doing the greenhouse tomatoes, but I have some bell peppers on the go for the conservatory, which we turn into a greenhouse in the summer months because it's too hot to sit in. Can't wait to see what else you're growing this year. I have over-done it with the ornamentals. I need my own field, for all the flowers I want to grow! I am doing dahlias from seed and from tubers this year. The tubers are a colourful mix from Wilko, and the seed variety is Collarette Dandy (dwarf). Very excited as they look gorgeous. Love and hugs to you both from Sussex xxx

    With the old seeds from 2020, would it pay to try to germinate/chit the seeds on a paper towel? That way you are not wasting compost, heat in the propagator or space for seeds that may not be viable.

    My dahlia's are finally showing signs of flowering (first year trying them). My only concern is I have some sunflowers that have decided to pop up near them (I sewed some seeds and didn't see any result so assumed they had failed and then planted the dahlia seedlings... but the weather improved and the sunflowers are coming up. I saw a video the other day saying sunflowers produce a chemical that stunts other plants growth... should I be concerned or is it not as potent/wide ranging enough to worry about?

  • @eliandkate

    @eliandkate

    I have to be honest, I’m sceptical of this thing with sunflowers. I’ve always grown them in beds and pots with my other flowers and never noticed it. But they do however steal water and nutrients so keep on top of that 😁

    @@eliandkate I think I'm with you on that... the plants around them seem fine... the only issue looks like underwatering and that's more because I've spent the best part of the week taking the top soil off the front yard, Saturday was at the local Begonia Festival then Sunday was Pride festival... so I have been neglecting them a bit.
