@@kelogsloops facts! Even 185g/m arches still better than many brands comparing to the same thickness! The very first time I used it just blew my mind because I alway thought I was bad in watercolour haha Ngl I've so many things to talk about paper...because I've been trying to convince people that good paper makes better work! Arches story. My grandmother, a wonderful artist, gave me arches paper as soon as I started painting. Used it for years (I paint very slowly on one intricate painting but really love it). Time passes. Arches used up. I go to buy more paper, recoil at price, try a cheaper brand.... Yowza. SO much worse experience. Try Arches!
Again, please do keep in mind that all these recommended materials are what I personally used to learn and practice with. Some of these supplies may not be so readily available in other countries, and other countries might have more access to a wider variety of better, or even cheaper materials!!

Polish brand "Renesans" makes awesome watercolor half pans with a very intense pigmentation. And they are pretty affordable.
Bad paper can make you think you're bad at painting when you're not. It's so worth it to get the right paper. And I have this huge array of brushes and I use the same two brushes for pretty much everything.
I would love to see a video demonstrating common mistakes and how to fix them while painting with watercolor..

@@kelogsloops painting over the lines? Random drops of paint or water in places you didn't want them? Accidentally starting too dark? Cauliflowers? They seem to be the most common things complete beginners would panic about but they're all pretty easy to avoid or resolve, and quickly once you know how.
@marshmellow5344

@@kelogsloops streaky lines (cauliflower), color gradients not too well blended, accidentally painting on undesired areas. To much water/not enough water on brush and when to prewet papers. How to lift paints and as mentioned above, when starting too dark with skintones, how should we fix it. 😁Those are some of my concerns as a begginer last year 😁

@@kelogsloops My biggest hurdle was learning to embrace the suck. Yes, I am not very good but this is how I paint now and only painting more will make me improve. Hating my art is counterproductive so people should really learn to get over that and embrace their suck.

Common pencil smudge tip: if you don't want to use a kneaded eraser to lighten the lines much do a light wash with clean water over the graphite and let it dry. Then once you apply watercolor the graphite is sealed and locked into the paper
@samliphied
Жыл бұрын
Well won't the water smudge the graphite?
@benamisai-kham5892
Жыл бұрын
@@samliphied I've not had the problem but it could be the pencils I'm using, I use a very light hand and large lightly damp brush that I tap out on a sponge and microfiber cloth (or you can get a staining sponge which I also use instead at times) to make sure it hasn't absorbed too much water, as I don't have a spray bottle that would probably be easier. Also a way to pick up water like paper towels or shop towels preferably (In case any water runs) but I always seal my edges with masking tape, I keep it on flat surface until I start painting with colors to make sure the water doesn't run. When I seal graphite I like to use hair spray but I haven't tried that on watercolor paper or tested how watercolors interact with hairspray so I don't recommend that, use clear wax (or use a white crayon) over the lines if anything else.

Great recommendations! For paper I like to look for big (huge) sheets at the store and cut them to size. That's most of the time much cheaper than blocks or pads! That way I can try different papers too without buying a block/pad for 30+ euros but one or two sheets at a time.
Cool! I just got started learning watercolor because my digital pen broke. It was nice to hear that such an influential watercolor artist like you learned digital art before watercolor as well! :)
Ahhhh just putting his videos on in the background make working so much easier. Such a calm vibe
One year ago you inspired me to express myself through this technique! I love your works and how much passion you put in them, thank you! 💖🦊
Why this video is aestheticly pleasing??! HiS acCeNt... EdiTiNg.... MuSic✨️✨️
Thank you so much for making all these videos. I've found them so useful. They are a gift to the arts community and your enthusiasm is infectious and refreshing.
I was extremely blessed when I started at a visual arts focused high school and my dad insisted that if I was to buy a proper watercolour palette, I should get a high standard one. He covered the cost of the Schmincke 18 half pan set when I was 16 for my birthday and I am so grateful for it every day as I still use them, nowadays with much more skill. I agree with everything here, when starting out it is good to get a slightly cheaper set for practice but I also agree that the best brands and the highest price ones are still also worth it. I use Mixed Media paper most often and it is not good for watercolour... But I struggle doing clean lines on watercolour paper. Just gotta get more practice in on it.
Man I love your art, pleeeeease keep up the great work you've been doing here in youtube and instagram.
Thanks for this! This video comes at such a perfect time for me, as I have been attempting watercolor illustrations for the first time in about 8 years 😅 As a beginner, I can attest that going from cheap watercolor paper to Arches paper has made a huge difference for me!
Your 2019 videos has helped me so much last year when I started watercolor, I hope this one will help others has well ! From this year of painting, every day, there is one thing that helped me improve (besides consistency obviously), it's working on a medium quality paper the Strathmore sketchbook to be precise, every two months I work on a big piece on arches paper, and every time I can feel my improvements, so thank you that's also thanks to you and your work
I was waiting for my “ good morning, good morning! “ 🤣🤣🤣 Awesome video as always!! The quality is just✨✨🤌🏻🤌🏻
I love these videos! Thanks for uploading such quality content!
I've been doing watercolor for two years and never watch tutorials.. this is a sign!!! ( I don't know why, but I always just learned by trial and error )
Another thing to keep in mind for the difference between hot press and cold press: hot press dries faster and it's really great for gradients especially since it's a smooth paper, it doesn't like having too many layers and you really have to act fast! Cold press meanwhile takes time to dry, it's a much slower process and it loves layers a lot more but there is the slight grain texture. So keep that in mind while grabbing paper! (Also, most cellulose papers or papers that say thin grain/ grain, those are always cold press or at least 95% of the time. If it says smooth grain then usually it's hot press but it's rare to find that in cellulose papers so yeah!)
Thank you for including all the needed the supplies and making it clear and understandable.
Amazing video! So informative, for both experienced artists to beginners. Thank you!
Good Morning! Glad to be here early to watch your vid! Thanks for this :)

Yessss I’ve been super into watercolor lately so I was super appreciate of this video! I personally use Koi watercolors which have always worked well for me, but if I were to try something else I’d definitely use stuff from this video.
I hope you'll upload more videos soon. I love watching them. They inspire me so much 💖
Yaayyy Finally! I kept on rewatching your video about watercolors from years ago hahaha I'm glad here's an updated one
Thank you for this video! I am about to step into this technique and into painting in general and it was a huuuge help! Great job on making it!

youre seriously amazing my guy!! thank you for understanding the inner broke artist within me
I absolutely love your art and the process… And this is no doubt because of your own style of drawing each piece… Having a unique style is what i have learnt from you … Thanks Alot!!
i almost gave up with watercolor because with years of practice it felt like i was still struggling but because of you and your videos, i found out that watercolor paper has a big impact with your art. i was using a cheap canson wc paper 😹 thank you, hieu!! you are a big inspiration
Always such a vibe and shared with pure kindness. ❤️❤️

God I needed this, WE NEED YOUUU!! Please upload more if you are available/want.
I just started getting into watercolor and I had no idea about brush care! Thanks for going over that. I am surprised I didn’t see masking glue mentioned. I have bad control over my brushes so that helped me so far.
Thank you for the info and laughs!
I also like using watercolour sketchbooks for practice!! I use arteza or strathmore watercolour journals and its a great way to practice without feeling like you need to make a finished artwork, which i sometimes feel when I'm painting on a loose sheet. I also like Van Gogh paints since they're cheap and good quality (the worst thing about them is that some colours are too opaque) hope i could help and love the video!!
I am SO EXCITED to play with watercolors again! I have a handful of pans, discs, and tubes but my concern is my paper. I find the Canson XL Watercolor fun to mess around and test with, so I'm thinking of upgrading to a more high quality paper that handles marker, charcoal, gouache, etc. 😊♥️
Literally the video that I wanted right now!!
I never had the guts to call myself an artist... And now I do because of you!
I needed this so badly!
Great video! I like to use the white of the paper wherever possible, with white ink used sparingly. It gives a nice effect.
Thanks for the video! You have a great nack for breaking it down, making it interesting and overall engaging! Don't ever stop! From a fellow Melbournian, Thank you :)
Love your art and your vidoes so much! Thank you so much for making them!!!!!!!
the white ink, that is such a cool idea I am going to try that!
Oh man, brush care is something I absolutely need. My favourite synthetic detail brush was recently destroyed in a gouache painting gone wrong and in my country, it is nearly impossible to find a good brush in physical art stores (Amazon shipping fees and taxes are crazy for my country and unless it’s a brush brand I know and love, I find it hard to buy brushes online). This is really informative. Thank you so much!
Wonderful guide for beginners! Love to see the acting on camera too
Please keep making these videos. Helps begginers like me alot.
Thank you for teaching! I really want to get better, and I typically do that by trying to mimic my favorite watercolor artists (meaning you)
10:31 - YESS! Totally agreed! I’m an student and I love doing art. Me personally like sketching so I just found out that even the cheapest art supplies also work well.. but sometimes I’m not trusting those cheap art supplies that I haven’t use them before, cause I don’t want to waste my money on that. But yea.. I’m agree your point! I just watched an Artist, he used a cheapest supplies to make a good art. And it’s not about the cheap quality; it’s about the skills you’ve. ✨
