Sometimes it is so good to pull out my art journal and set out with the intention of experimenting and playing with my watercolors and mixed media supplies. That's it, that's all! And yet, it is often when I learn the most and have the most fun. I hope you can give yourself permission to do the same thing and to do it often. And when you do, I have no doubt you will surprise yourself in so many positive ways. Abstract art can be so freeing! Enjoy sweet friends!

Glad your husband persuaded you! It was helpful to see your approach of having fun and creative learning. I often find that the times I play and explore what the water wants to do turn out better than when I try too hard. A good reminder to be open to trying new techniques too. Thank you as always! Oh my gosh what a fun painting! I am so glad you listened to your husband, and shared it with us! I felt like I was right there with you, anticipating every move you made! I loved watching the color move everytime it hit the water, oh what fun! I'm not sure I could have covered it all up! 😂 We would have such a good time hanging out and creating together, we'd be giggling, and oohing and ahhing the whole time, so we might not get a whole lot done! 😂 I tried this technique last night with different mediums and water, and had so much fun! I didn't get the same results as you, but I was not using 100% cotton paper, which I will try next! Thank you for reminding us to try new things, don't have expectations and just enjoy the process! Thank you for deciding to share your sketchbook. I always enjoy watching how artists process. I find that it sometimes validates by own decisions. I have ruling pens as well and bought them specifically to use for more accurate placement of masking fluid but found they are useful for all types of applications from ink to paint and almost any fluid you might want to place onto paper.

Experimenting certainly brings out some beautiful techniques. I recently bought a ruling pen but had not considered 'scribbling' with it. Will give that a try.

What a cool exploration! I could watch paint spread in water all day... so satisfying. Can you paint watercolor normally over gesso, or should I try watercolor ground? I saw that the gold worked, but they were thin lines. What about a larger area? Not sure if I made sense, haha. I got a new tool the other day that you might like: KINGART Fine Line Painting Pen 0.5mm. Thank you so much for the inspiration and sharing your beautiful art with us. Glad you decided to show this one, a lot of fun! 🌻

Thank you for your kind words and for being here with me Christie ❤️🤗 As long as you keep it to a wash of gesso (and not undiluted gesso), I find it works very much like painting over watercolor ground, ie it doesn't give the same color consistency as painting over paper, but it does tint the gesso. I like using the gesso because I can paint over it without it blending with the paint like gouache does (hope this makes sense). I will check out that painting pen - thanks for the suggestion ☺️
