I come back to this video often for refreshing my memory. Been doing orchids/shows for a decade w/ my Grams and WC for maybe 6 years or so. Some thrived some died. However I missed a major point of wet dry cycling and since doing that the past year the success rate/growth has shot up and rehab plants are THRIVING! Explosive root growth within 2-3 months. Appreciate the info so much!! Q: how do you decide on semi/full? I'm doing full but no particular reason why lol

Hi! I only do water culture for short periods of time now. When I do have one in WC, I do something in between full and semi. Happy growing and thanks for watching! 😇

Thank You Amy for another fabulous video! This one answered so many of my questions. I'll be busy watching the other recommended videos this week. I'm beginning to get the courage to try one in water culture, but I'm waiting to gain more experience with my orchids, as I am new at this. I want to get through more seasons and know my environment better as the seasons change. I have transitioned some into the NZ moss, at your recommendation (a couple of months ago) and they are all so much happier in this medium! I also love that I can see their roots taking off through the glass! So many of them are putting out new roots this Spring. I have one that is popping out six new roots from the top! Thank you, again, for your wonderful knowledge and videos!

Very interesting 👍 Most of my orchids are in full water culture n some that were not too happy, I placed them in bark n moss n are thriving in that mixture but I have two orchids that grow such baby leaves n they were totally set back when I had them in water culture n I am hoping they thrive n grow bigger leaves eventually , Thx for sharing

I am trying to grow some roots and rescue a Phal. I am getting white fuzzies on the only roots I have left. The fuzz is mostly at the top of the root. I had a plastic bag on it. I took it off. She still has firms roots at this point.

I respectfully must say as user of water culture for my orchids, what works for some may not specifically work for others; and sometimes that should be noted...in the beginning of my journey I took so many tutorials as “the only way/truth” and unfortunately lost many orchids because of it. Of course it was my own fault, a learning curve of sorts, but none the less painful. I guess in our “orchid journey” little tweaks” sometimes are discovered and created to fit what suits our specific little ones🙂

Thanks so much for sharing your expertise and knowledge. You mention that the best candidates for switching over to water culture are the orchids you have just brought home . Is it ok to switch them over while they are still in bloom? Or is it best to wait until the blooms die off? Thank, Alma Cohen

Hi I have mixed experience with FWC. I have two orchids at work (I work in a chemical company them I have a free supply of distilled water) in FWC in a window with a lot of light and they love it. While at home it is cold and not not lightly and have many problems with my FWC orchids.

Hi Glorie and thank you for sharing your experience. You've brought up some interesting points. I've found that when orchids in water culture get plenty of warmth and bright, indirect light, they grow better. Also, each environment is so different. Hi Lea! That's completely normal...algae is going to grow in water culture. If it gets out of hand, you can take a wet paper towel and gently remove some of it...but it will grow back. Happy growing!

Thanks Amy for the video, I watched your video many times and learned a lot. I am from Sydney and a new orchid grower. I love your WC orchids and decide to do it. I bought three Phal and transferred two of them into FWC straightway and monitor them every day and learned how to increase water level and they are now working ok. I kept the big one with two spikes and health roots in the pot, I thought I may lost all buds if I transferred it into WC. but two buds were fallen off a week after and I noticed that roots were turning to brown since the moss was too tighten and they almost grow over the pot so I transferred it into FWC as well. I increased the water level three times compare with day one since flowers were failing and they now are turning back, however the leaves are still not as firm as it was in moss, do I need to increase the water level further? I am worried I may kill the orchid if I give too much water. Do I need to make almost every single root to touch the water when roots are vary leveled. what I would see if I give too much water, sorry too many question. thanks for your help.

Hi Joanne! If I were you, I'd place the one that's having problems in orchid grade or NZ sphagnum moss. It sounds like the roots were suffocating in its previous pot. I have a video where I show the type of moss I use, "My favorite products for orchid growing" from last month where I show the type of moss I recommend. The roots will start growing nicely in the new moss. I have many videos on my channel on growing in moss. I recommend the ones I've done over the past year because they're my most recent ones. Hello. I've seen your excellent video many times. I have all my orchids in semi waterculture and they have been doing great. Except, the first one i put in water 4 years ago, it has been suffering for 3 months. It has only 3 air roots left and limp leafs. Can you please help me to save it ? Thank you.

Hi Angellina! I do semi-water culture on all my orchids now. My Phalenopsis orchids stay in water more than my Dendrobiums, but they're still not in water all the time. The important thing is to watch the roots so that you know when your orchids need water in your environment. Thanks so much for watching and happy growing! :)

Yes, the water is usually a good nutrition source for the plant :)

Hi i have an orchid i noticed that the stem was turning black after searching through many youtube videos and researching i found no answer as to why the stem was turning black so i took out all of the moss and realized that the orchid had yellow roots some even black i removed all of the roots and now i just have the leaves of the orchid and the remaing green part of the stem that i cut what would you recommend that i do now can i repot it in the orchid mix or should i put it in water? Im not sure how i can keep this plant alive please help i really would like to keep this plant alive it was a gift from my mother in law.

Hi Bianca! I would try placing the stem in some damp New Zealand sphagnum moss and see if you can get some roots growing. But it will take time. I wish you much success! Happy growing!

What’s your opinion on growing phalaenopsis on a fish tank ? With roots submerged in water .. let’s assume that the water of the fish tank is clean and has a ph of 5.8 - 6.0 ? The temperature is slightly higher .. around 30 degrees Celsius

Hi and thanks for watching! Full water culture means the orchid roots are in water most or all of the time, and semi means the roots are in the water part of the week, and allowed to dry part of the week. Happy growing!

I'm a newer subscriber and have enjoyed your videos. I only have 3 orchids, but doing well for almost a year and in full bloom. I'm planning a trip to help care for a friend after a complicated surgery. I may be gone almost a month. I haven't seen any discussion about how to "leave orchids" for an extended time, such as long trips. I don't have anyone to come in and care for my orchids. If you have addressed this, I would love to know the video I missed! If not, any tips?

I reviewed your videos and my phals in their bark are soaking prior to leaving next week. I have a 5 gallon bucket the 3 of them fit in. I will drain them of course and put a new inch of water in the bottom. I have a round rack that will be about 2 inches above the bottom so no plants will sit in water, but above it, and close to each other. I am able to leave them in the same location of filtered light with slanted blinds that they have been used to. My home temp will not be higher than 80 in the day and in the mid 70's at night. I guess that is allI can do and will let you know how it goes when I return before Memorial Day.

I have a very small orchid. Not very old. I have put it in full water culture. But my roots are still dying. Or they are getting very easy to come off of the plant. Can u help me

Would you say any orchid can adapt? Or only certain ones?

From what I can work out they grow best with high humidity but then plenty of ventilation, lots of bright light, which sunshine gives but then not in direct sunlight. I have a plant now that my GF said ah throw it away, etc., but though it is in pretty poor shape I can see that there is life in it still, and I need to listen to it, so I'm listening and looking, as the leaves were drying up, and it had suffered crown rot but my GF would not allow me to take charge of it. i have decided that though it needs plenty of water, I cannot leave it in a lot of water, first the roots must grow out beyond the wooden-like remains underneath, so that I can then place only the roots and not that wooden-like remains in water where the wooden part would start rotting again. So now I have it in a glass pot, large, with cling film over the top, which I am opening now and then to allow air circulation, but at the same time, allowing the leaves to rehydrate by absorbing condensation from the air. I've told my GF that the plant will be huge after I have doctored it and put it into my loving intensive care. I am nursing it around the clock, except when I sleep. I'm glad my GF will not read this, so, anyhow, she has not got a good feel/sense of what is going on, ahaha, leaves her plants in a far too dark place, I had all of her plants responding well to me until she came home from vacation and went nuts at me for interfering, all of her plants were dehydrated before I showed them some love and understanding, they had poor, shrivelling leaves, she turned the inside core of the leaf clusters, from where the new leaves emerge, away from the light source, so as to look pretty to the viewers in a room, the viewers being mainly her and me but it is logical that the core needs to be towards the light, mainly like Jesus' disciples faced towards him, and that plants should not be turned around all the time and respositioned, because all plants grow towards the light, Please do not tell my GF I have been talking about her, luckily she cannot read my handwriting on here.

I have noticed that your containers are very clean when you do your videos. How often do you wash them out and how did you do that.

Hi Brenda and thanks so much for your comment! :) When I buy the vases, I clean them really well with soap and water. But after that, I actually don't clean the inside of the vases often. I wipe off the outside of the vase sometimes with just a damp cloth. I thought that after I stopped cleaning the inside of the vases, that algae would take over and they would get dirty, but that hasn't happened at all. (But I really appreciate you saying they look so clean!) Have a great day and happy growing! :)

Hi Angela! If you decide to try water culture, start with just 1 orchid and one that you can replace if you need to. If you have problems with mosquitoes in your area, I would not recommend water culture. Happy growing and have a great day!

Hi and thanks so much for watching! On many orchid species, the spike turns brown after the blooms fall. It's just a normal part of the growth cycle. The orchid will actually recycle the nutrients in the spike back into the plant. Happy growing!

Hi, thanks a lot for your videos, I decided to try one of the phals in WC after following your channel. This phal has been in FWC for 6 months already and I consider it a success: new strong roots, new leaf grow. But recently started seeing strange in the roots. It looks like algae, but the water is clean and I've been changing it partially every time, adding a bit of H2O2. The roots also started to be "darker", not green as they used to be. I thought they started rotting, but they still firm and tough and strong and look like still growing! May be you have any idea on what this could be and whether I should do something about it? It sounds and looks like yours is doing fine, but I don't use H202 on the roots anymore. It was causing problems, so I stopped using it, and they are doing really well now. Yes, exactly. The fungi are actually beneficial to the orchid. I've grown them both ways, and when there's some algae present, they grow better. Interestingly, when I started giving my water culture orchids a dry day (out of water) every 4 or 5 days, the algae grows but it stays controlled. Thanks for your questions, and have a great day!
