I found your videos at a time when im tending my first phal orchid. Youve explained clearly my struggle to identify the " mushy root, the covering on that dead root and the root bud beginning on the stem. I actually came out to take her out of a soaked plastic pot tonight and raised her higher so as to breathe. Im seeing green on a couple of roots as of repotting three days ago. Thank you and I'll be following!

Finally I found you. You and one other gal are the only two that are easy to understand. Thank you for being so real in your videos. I have no idea what kind of orchids I have. I have over 100 house plants. I wanted to try orchids. I just didn't think it would be emersion therapy on what to do. Lol emersion no pun intended, it just happened. Hi Danielle! LOVE your videos! Questions: 1) Do you ever change the water or wash the containers? -Just add more water each week/days if partial water culture? - Wash the glass beads? Soap? Rinse/Dishwasher? 2) Do you let your water sit overnight if it is tap water or well or softened water? room temp.? 3) Do you have supplemental lighting? If so how many hours a day? 4) Do you have fans circulating for air movement? 5) Do your fertilize on a schedule of how often? -And basic brand fertilizer you would recommend? -Video on fertilizing was pretty complicated for just my 3 phals..... 6) I am snowbird in AZ and Rochester, N.Y., and trying to figure out how to be successful in this dry climate. I just picked up 3 orchids in FL on a trip. Have not repotted, in sphagnum, I know I need to get them out of there, but trying to research this before I uproot these beautiful blooming orchids!? Should I while they are budded and blooming??? THANK YOU! I LOVE YOUR THOUGHTFUL, LOVING APPROACH AND DETAILED EXPLANTIONS! 3/5/23

I do clean my jars once a month (or more frequently if needed) I do not clean the beads unless I repot because I don’t want to disturb the roots. I use well water but I don’t let it sit overnight. I do have supplemental lighting and it is typically on for 12 hours. I do use fertilizer kzread.info/dash/bejne/fKB9ytWfl5quo9o.htmlsi=swi5QfuSt8J-S1qL You can repot while orchids are in bloom and you are gentle it typically won’t affect the blooms however if the plant seems healthy you can wait to unpot.

Great video Danielle. I find it very helpfull because 2 days ago I tried doing water culture on an almost dead phal. It lost all it's roots due to stem rot that I didn't notice because there were remnants of old leaves so I couldn't see the rot. So I tried to save what I could and treated the stem rot, good thing is that the rot was only on one side of the stem so it's not completely dead. The phal has 2 aerial roots & 1 small wrinkled leaf left. The rotting has stopped. I know stem rot and water culture might not work... but I think it's all there's left for me to do. I did not read into water culture, so I hope I did the good thing. Fingers crossed

Ok Danielle I did throw mine into water. Because they were dieing and we're dehydrating which had a lot to do with some root rot. I felt I had no choice but to put them in water to try and save. In I've been scouring all or most of your videos to try and help save mine. I did poor some of the water out to just let it touch the bottom of roots, now just watching and waiting. Some have rehydrated some I tried the black tea method also.

Good morning,I've been watching your videos and have begun the process. A few questions how do you feed them fertilizer while in this process? When you remove orchid from media and clean all debris and dead roots do you spray the roots with straight peroxide and allow roots to dry out? Then slowly introduce orchids to this process? Interesting videos keep up the great work.

Thanks to your advice I have four going right now, two of which are brand new with pretty great roots! Do you find the roots straighten out a bit after they get used to their home? I have a little trouble getting them in and out of the vases because they are sort of coke bottle shaped. Plenty of room in the bottom but a hassle sliding them in and out through the narrow bit. I am hoping they relax so it’s easier because I think the vases are a good size for them and the shape helps keep the top up and out of the vase. Just curious about your experience with that. So grateful for you sharing your experience! Roots are branching already :)

Danielle's Orchid Ranch thank you for your thoughts! The two newest ones were very rooty so they are still pot shaped. I did notice today that they slip in and out easier when very wet so I’ll be trying that when I wash the vases until they hopefully relax. I know I broke one yesterday and was so upset with myself! I’ll go with wider mouthed vessels next time for sure. Have a great day!

Your orchid videos are amazing. Some of the most informative out there. Just one question that I’m struggling to find an answer to. Can you trim the stem of an orchid? I find that with many of mine the stem is so long that I can’t hydrate the roots that the plant is trying to grow without the stem wanting to hang in the water. Any advice would be greatly appreciated for myself and I’m sure many others trying this method.

Yes you can trim the stem of a Phalaenopsis. I have done this on some of mine with very long stems. You just want to be sure not to cut to much off, stay well below where the leaves attach to the stem. Let the cut dry out for a few days before watering again so no stem rot will develop. I am so pleased you have found my videos to be helpful! Thank you for watching!

I am so totally that person who should never see through the looking glass, yikes, panic, etc..... I experimented with 5 Phals - this one tanked right away. The others are holding firm over two weeks now, and I water just 24 hrs, overnight with a smidgin of water on the base of the vase throughout the week and so far so GOOD....I like seeing the roots and getting the picture ..... Hope the mites have bit the dust.... thanks from B.C., Georgia

It’s so interesting how there is always one plant who has a tantrum! You can soak the base of the stem every couple of days to hydrate a rootless orchid. It’s best not to do it to often, first because you don’t want the stem to rot and second because you want it to grow roots and look for water. If you soak the stem to much it will think it has enough water and the roots it does eventually put out will be puny. I typically soak a stem for 24 hours and then let it stay dry for 4-5 days and then soak it again. I hope whatever you decide to do it comes around and grows roots for you!

Hi Danielle, so is this the best method to grow them in? Because I have 2 orchards that were in bloom, 1 of which was a re-bloom (all but 1 bud fell off, still hasn't opened) and both started root rot & yellowing leaves. The new orchard, the blooms died very quick, browned, fell off and quickly browned all the way down the stem which not sure if this was fungus related. Not sure if both plants had too much water in the pot but repotted both into new moss after cutting the dead roots off. This has stopped the yellowing of leaves, but I feel they are very unstable & down to 1 root but leaves are nice and firm still. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It might be fungus, you should probably slice off all the black infected pieces with a sanitized knife. Then dip the plant in cinnamon powder to prevent any more rot. Its important to not cut through any infected parts of the plant though, make sure you cut further in so your knife does not pass through the bad pieces, only cut through healthy green growth! Let the plant stay dry for a few days and then resume normal watering, and re-coat the cuts in more cinnamon after every watering. If your orchid is planted in bark, make sure you don't let it sit in standing water for more than an hour. If your plant is in water culture, then you might consider putting your plant on a 5 day wet and 2 day dry schedule, rather than being continuously wet. It all really depends on your growing enviroment so its good to experiment a bit... but definitely coat that thing in cinnamon asap! Good luck! :)

Very good! Clear, informative with excellent photographic evidence of what you are describing. Just one question: when exactly do you chop off the rotting root (at the beginning of your video you showed a really dead dry root with no filament, high up in the vase but no chopping: will you just leave it I wonder or cut it off?). Thank you hope to hear from you soon! Pleased to subscribe to your channel!

thank you very nice from you i learn a lot today 👍. can you give me your advice please, i have a phal in WC she was in rocks in the bottom of the vase when i pulled her i think i broke most of the roots. when i give water i see the roots have been different. today i saw new roots from the top of those roots should i cut the roots where it s been cracked ? i was thinking maybe too much fertilizers or cause of the rocks. Since i saw your videos maybe the roots where old when i bought the plant. i didn t know they live 2 years. thanks again Danielle ☺

Sophie Khajadour this is one of the reasons why I don’t use rocks with my Phals. I am worried about damaging the roots when I water them. As long as the roots are not mushy I wouldn’t worry about the cracks. If they start to get mushy and rot then you can trim those parts of the roots.

@@daniellesorchidranch1591 yeah that what i was thinking too but i am " afraid" that it ll rot so i keep an eye on it because after i could have bacterias.... i m not confortable too to give fertilizers. How much ppm do you give to your phal because i know you give every time unless when there s no active grow less i am right? I am happy finally we have sun here and it s for 15 days yeah i see the difference they push new roots. I also have a phal nothing for like 2 months 3 bottom leaves are yellowing do i have to repot? Thanks again and bravo to you because i know you work a lot at the hospital and you give time to your passion 👍🙂

Sophie Khajadour I always fertilize my orchids. I started out with a very low ppm (around 90) and worked my way up to what I’m currently doing which is 250-300. I would suggest you do the same, start with very weak fertilizer and increase gradually if you think they will benefit from more. The phal with the yellowing leaves, they do over time loose leaves, does she have a lot of leaves? Does she have a good root system? If she is healthy then her dropping a few leaves is not a problem. If she’s not healthy she could be re-absorbing the energy in those leaves to survive.

Danielle's Orchid Ranch Hi Danielle, are your phals sitting in the higher ppm fertilizer? I got a couple sprouted roots on a few of my phals. One of my phals has extended its roots, and I got a keiki growing in between 2 leaves on one of my mini phals. I’m trying to wait until it gets big enough and cut it out so I don’t hurt the mother. Missed your videos! Hope all is well. Happy growing 🌱

  • @daniellesorchidranch1591

Tabitha Hersey That is a tough decision to make. Sometimes if an orchid has been properly cared for taking it out of its media and putting it into water culture while it has blooms will not shock the plant. However if the plant is already in a semi state of shock because of poor handling it may drop it’s blooms. I have had both cases. sometimes I will take it out of bark and the blooms will be fine and sometimes I will take it out of bark, find that the roots are terrible and the plant decides to drop its blooms, it’s really a personal choice. I however always take it out of bark, if the roots are in terrible shape then I want to get the plant the help that it needs so it will survive to bloom another day but again that’s just me.

  • @daniellesorchidranch1591

Ann Tramonti splitting leaves are often a sign of lack of hydration while the leaf was growing. I’m not sure what you are growing in but check yourself roots out and make sure it has roots that are still alive.

  • @daniellesorchidranch1591

    @daniellesorchidranch1591

Ann Tramonti so that’s more then likely the cause, the plant wasn’t getting enough hydration. I don’t grow in medium but I know of people who do and they will use a little moss added to the bark around the base of a rootless orchid to try to keep it hydrated. I hope you’re plant is better and has many new roots soon!

I literally collect rain water and only give them that. But I live in the tropics, orchids grow naturally here, so NC our humidity is great rain water works....recently I learned about seaweed fertilizer (sargasum seaweed) I get on the beach!! Free! Just trying it but I here it works great! Fingers crossed. I hate chemicals so natural is best.
