about the fish story: joe tells dorothea he was born to play music. he tells his mother music is all he thinks about every day. basically, he says he can’t live without playing music. “playing music” is the ocean. he has been playing piano since his childhood. he plays every day, practicing, playing for friends and family, during his classes and tutoring sessions, and even during his failed auditions. he has been in the water his whole life. he plays with dorothea, because he thinks that is the way to the ocean. but he doesn’t feel different, because he was already there.

Yea kinda. It's kinda that feeling that we have to achieve something in order to feel whole. But then when we get it, we don't feel any different. We have to learn to enjoy every part of life and not just build up the large stepping-stones. Can't let the rest of life pass us by.

Playing music is something you don't have to be famous to do, it's pretty hard to make a film of blockbuster quality without a crew behind you. Sure you can write the story (which is fulfilling to some degree in and of itself), but if you don't have the resources to make it, you're sort of at a dead end.

@@everestcanyon5647 use your phone to film some stuff with friends. or just by yourself. plenty of creators out there are doing that. no one says you have to be making blockbusters to be making films. you’re measuring the experience by the endgame, just like joe was. there isn’t an endgame. don’t wait until you can make the perfect movie to make a movie. just make something.
Are we just gonna ignore that amazing pun at the beginning? "I'm soul exited"

I also really appreciated her high sensitivity; her initial reaction to NYC, music being 'a little much'. Life in general isn't geared towards people like that, but there's no shame in taking it a little easier and being kind to those sensitivities.

I think that we are born with base personalities, and, depending on how we are raised, some traits grow and some shrink. For example: My brother and I were very different kind of babies. I was quiet, and as my parents tell me, perfect. My brother on the other hand was loud and whiney. Now we are older, and I am louder and more out there. My brother...still is loud and whiney.

Yea. Scientific study shows that our personality comes from both nature and nurture. Meaning our environments shape us, but we also have genetic personality traits from our parents. For example, some people who never grew up around one of their parents (maybe they died or their parents left and did not return) may find that they still gain some aspects of that parent's personality naturally.

Yeah, that's "high maintenance" vs "low maintenance" babies. No single known cause, no correlation with personality. + High maintenance babies are more common with prior pregnancy complications, a traumatic birth or premature birth, and separation from mother.

Yeah, his Mom mentioned the audition to him, never said anything about the hospital. I think that would've been more important if she'd had known.
He wanted to be a famous musician to touch people with his music like he was touched by music when he was kid but he didn't realize he already touched people being a teacher, that whole story about the fish says alot about that.

If you're alive, that means you're good enough - you got your Earth pass, after all. If you love doing something, that's enough reason to do it. You don't need to be the best at anything; you're enough as you are.
I live in New York and trust me, it’s big, there are always crowds and You CANNOT stop in the middle of the street.
A soul's purpose is to experience life in the physical form. "The meaning of life is to just be alive. It is so plain, and so obvious, and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something greater than yourself." - Alan Watts "Happiness isn't something you put inside. It's already there! Sometimes you just need someone to help you find it. It's inside you. It's inside all of us." - Princess Poppy

When you tell yourself that one of your passions is the point of your existence it makes you devalue all the other moments in your life. Every moment can be meaningful if you can appreciate it.
At the end when we thought Joe was gonna die for good all I could think was, “His poor mom!” Also I felt bad for the owner of Mr. Whiskers like she takes her cat to the hospital to help people and one of the patients steals her cat that’d be rough

No one: The little souls: ʰᵉˡˡ ʰᵉˡˡ ʰᵉˡˡ ʰᵉˡˡ ʰᵉˡˡ
After 2020, this is the movie the whole planet needed.
They say (in child development) that all babies are born with an innate temperament. This movie exaggerates when it comes to personality development during time in the womb tho. Because yes, our personality is primarily molded by our environment, but it also has a little bit to do with how we are born! Some babies are born with aggressive tendencies, some passive, some babies naturally draw their attention to colorful, visual things, while other babies are naturally drawn to sound and music. These innate interests/tendencies contribute to our growing personality! Great reaction!
"I'm just afraid that if I die today, that my life would have amounted to nothing" I love how this movie really showed that it wouldn't be NOTHING, bc you still made a lot of people happy, you live your live, and those sad life moments in the beginning aren't all that bad, that's why life is amazing that you can learn from mistakes, find something new. Him sitting alone and eating isn't bad or sad, he's happy this way, it wasn't that his life was sad and that's what matters. So if he would die today, it still would be meaningful.
Respectfully disagree that we aren’t born with personality. I mean you’re totally right that environment and genetics play a HUGE role in who we become. But as a Mom or four each of my babies from day one were VERY different. It’s actually fascinating to see the differences in children. I had a serious calm baby who went to bed on time and didn’t like to be tickled. I’ve raised a baby that had to be held all of the time and became irate if they felt ignored. One was comfortable with anyone holding them and laughed at three months old. Another was much more picky about who could hold her and didn’t even crack a smile until she was six months old. Great film, great reaction, love your channels content.

Yeah, i have twin nieces and even as babies, their disposition are very much different from each other. One was bubblier/gigglier than the other. And turned out as kids, one became more talkative and other a little more reserved which made sense from their initial demeanor as babies. But yeah, not disregarding outside factors can also play a part a little later on.
I’m a saxophone player, she is playing real notes
This movie had me crying. I have a deep love for music (like it's hard to explain) and seeing how passionate he his about music and playing idk I felt I connected to this movie for many reasons so I was sobbing alot in this movie
This movie's message is amazing. The good thing about life is living.
I'm a metalhead that cries easy. My lady had this playing in the background and I only really paid attention to the speech with Dorothea and the scene where he takes inspiration from the small moments in life...I watched this with a giant knot in my throat. Can't wait to watch it in full Also 22 saying not liking music...I've heard that only a handful of times...and it's always shocking

I've been trying to figure out what i've been wanting to do with my life and if i'm supposed to reach for a super high goal. This movie kinda hit close to home for me and reminded me that sometimes your main purpose is to just enjoy life. Love this movie

Glad you liked the movie😊
I love the piano to I inherited my Granny Rachel's piano that was made in the late seventeen hundreds she purchased it in the 70s and we were able to find out how old it was so its very precious to me
As a person who has birthed a human, we're definitely born with our personalities. Ask your parents lol
This movie is based more on Hindu-Buddhist beliefs. Joe wanted to go back to Earth because he has a "Karmic attachment" to music... a Karmic attachment is when a soul wants to fulfill a desire that had not been achieved in a previous lifetime, so they reincarnate over and over and over again until that desire had been satisfied... on the other hand 22 didn't have any of those Earthly attachments, being rich powerful and influential means nothing to her. Lastly, souls come here to Earth to (experience), whether it may be a bad or a good experience it helps the soul learn and grow. That's why they are born with personalities, it's based on the souls karma from a previous life, these personalities are what would help guide a soul to learn while here on Earth. Some people are born into good families but still turn into terrible people... personally speaking, I think that a person's personality is 50% Nurture and 50% Nature.
You making a video legit forced me to finally watch it. Now I'm questioning my life, I thought it'll be a cutesy shallow kid story, but thankfully it didn't, I loved every thing about the movie, it really made me think. Now I understand why Cartoon Shows/movie critics are sometimes "Strict" when critsizing movies, since the medium can do amazing movies, Soul proved it.

As a black person, how can you not watch where you’re going especially on the street.

Yessss some people use that as a reason to dislike the movie or even call it “lazy writing”. But I think that was a very smart and intentional move. So many movies have a cliche happily ever after but this was a lot more profound and hopeful especially with the uncertainty of everything right now.
You're one of the sweetest reactors with some of the cutest reactions! Got so excited when this video was recommended, since I adore the film too!
I'm really enjoying the content you share here, Lakia! This movie is SO good (even the scene that broke me). Dude your comedy timing and editing is perfect
The young fish is looking for "the ocean" because the idea of the ocean sounds so grand. But when you're actually in the ocean.... it's just water. Joe thinks he's not living his dream but what he claims to be in love with is playing music. As a music teacher, he does play music - every, single day. Yet he's unfulfilled because "middle school music teacher" doesn't sound grand. But it is literally his dream - he is a professioinal, full-time musician. He just doesn't appreciate it.
This movie truly showed that you only live once, so spend every moment as if It's your last.
