Here is my rant since I dont have commentary. Please folks purchase winter tires. You are waayyy less likely to crash (unlike the people in this video) and if you get in a crash itll cost a heck of a lot more money than paying for winter tires. Plus they're also better in rain and lower temperatures (below 7 degrees) so even if we dont get a lot of snow they are more effective in winter conditions. There's also lots of times there is ice on the roads in the mornings and winter tires will keep you and others safe. Thanks for reading and watching!

The reason this is happening is not because a lack of winter tires. It's because there is inadequate de-icing and plowing. The cars will still slide on ice with snow tires.

My friends has debatably the best snow tires you can get Michelin X ICE, and he was still spinning his tires because of the icy condition and freezing temperatures. Thats just one, the other is our cities not preparing AT ALL for these conditions via having plow trucks ready or the roads not being salted prior. And lastly ofc it's still true people aren't preparing either with numorous warnings on highways and signs about the upcoming weather. Thats my take on all this.

Winter tires will help, but most of these videos are from the 2cm snow fall right as the cold snap hit. The snow fell onto roads that had been heated by the sun (it was a completely clear day before the system hit), where it melted slightly and then immediately froze solid as the temps were lowering to -10. Nothing can fully prevent you from sliding on pure ice. The real advice is to pull over and find another way home, or wait for a few hours until trucks can get out to salt the roads.

For starters look at their budgets for snow and ice removal and it will answer many questions for you. Oh Vancouver, it's always hilarious watching y'all in the snow. For anyone out there wondering, biggest thing is SNOW TIRES. Not all season, but snow tires. They're too different things, the rubber is softer in snow tires, tread is designed to avoid slipping, some have studs, etc. My little grandma sedan does better in the snow than most 4x4 Trucks and SUV's here in Vancouver because of this. If you don't have snow tires or chains wait out the snow unless it's an emergency. Especially since Vancouver is all hills. Thanks for reading my old man rant. Stay safe out there :) - Jasper

I lived in Toronto, where we see moderate snow and snow clearing/salting is done relatively quick, but a lot of people just flat out refuse to get winter tires because it's an additional expense, no matter how much I explain to them they completely think it's pure marketing scam and that "all seasons" are truly all seasons, which is quite ironic. Vancouver mostly just rains throughout winter, so I bet many many more find it hard to justify buying winter tires.

Back east where they get super cold temperatures like we experienced with the artic chill, they mix sand in. Sand would have helped a lot. Glad no one was crushed! Those cars were like dominos. We have very icy roads in Northern BC as well. The different is we have winter tires which do help and we don’t lock up our brakes when there’s ice. When you lock up brakes you have zero steering control. You’re sliding either way in ice so might as well be able to steer a bit. This really only seems to happen in the lower mainland where I’d wager the majority of tires are shitty summers or shitty all seasons.

Why do people on the southwest BC coast go driving when it's snowing? What is so important that they HAVE to drive? Now that ICBC has a no-fault policy everybody is at fault or not at fault, and one of the top managers in ICBC on Vancouver Island told me that "people on Vancouver Island could not be blamed for not brushing off snow on their cars and drive in slick conditions since they are not used to snow". The city of Vancouver should be made liable for not salting the roads. Snow comes for a brief period in the winter months in Vancouver and the city has next to no snow removal service it offers to tax payers. Salting the roads would prevent these black ice hills and extreme ice slip zones.

  • @pta3407

I love how people always go to the default rhetoric of "snow tires" in their comments as if they're some magical thing that will somehow prevent poor driving skills less relevant. You go to any other city in Canada, many of which gave winter tire mandates, you see the exact same thing. Of course, then the argument goes automatically to "well, they get two feet of snow, we only get 2 inches of snow" It doesn't matter, once its ices up (and it doesn't take long), ice is ice and the effect is the same. Winter tires help, but only if the driver does their part in driving during winter conditions. If they don't, they do squat. Another thing people never mention is that we do not sand here. Any other city sands - we don't, and that sand adds a hell of a lot of traction - as well as a hell of a lot of chipped windshields and hoods. The snow we also typically get here is also very different - it's a wetter, slushier snow compared to a drier, compact snow (which is where winter tires start to provide a benefit) . Wet, slushy snow grabs your tires and doesn't let go - drier snow compacts inside the tire siping providing the needed traction in winter tires which the slushy stuff doesn't give you. Also, people love to say that many of these cars had "summer tires" - I highly doubt that. All seasons yes (and for Vancouver, they are more than adequate for 90% of the winter driving we face), but summer tires - no. If people aren't going to bother spending money on dedicated winter tires, then they sure as hell ain't gonna spend money on dedicated summer tires. Don't get me wrong, yes, I 'm a very strong advocate for dedicated winter tires, but they're only as good as the person behind the wheel.

Most Vancouver drivers are totally incompetent with even a little snow. They are a danger to the public. Big hint, people--all weather tires are for those of us who know what we're doing (over 1 million miles, zero accidents). Everyone else need snow tires. If current weather trends continue, I too will be mounting snow tires--in an attempt to escape the shitfuckery that overconfident, underexperienced drivers threaten us all with. Thanks for posting this video. It explains more than I could ever say. PLEASE don't attempt to drive in snow and ice if you aren't sure of what you're doing. Practice in an empty parking lot.
