I live in Barcelona. The tourism model is nost sustainable. We dont want it. You may disagree with the forms or strategies of protesting, but one thing is clear, we are being affected by this model, it is a nuisance to those of us who live here and people need to get some rest and not travel as much. There is an existential anxiety in this empty life that apparently drives people for an endless search of the new. It is pathological and when you consider that as a visitor you have an impact on the place that you visit, it should become clear that you are not only affecting positively your life by rtraveling but that your leisure has negative effects on our daily lives. We would rather have less people come and visit and develop an economic model that does not depend on tourism and that impoves tourism. In order to improve tourism, we have to balance the interests of certain social classes who are benefitted by the moneis tourists leave in the territory and the economic interests of businesses and of the city to maintain a proper permanent residents. The type of tourists who come here are cheap, mostly uneducated, do not have any visitor ethics, leave a huge amount of externalities (costs which are not taken into account and for WE the permanent residents have to pay for through our taxes), and are not even respectful of the local residents. We have this same problem in Puerto Rico, my place of origin, and over there we do not depend on tourism quite as much as in Spain. Spain needs to change its tourism model and stop marketing its tourism as a cheap destination for people to get drunk and eat subpar food bereft completely of all of its authenticity.

Above all it is peaceful, something rare to find in these times & almost everyone greets you with a smile. They do try to burn most of their trash. Some places are much much cleaner than others. Hygienically they are very clean people and wash often. However, you have to decide what you are comfortable with. I am perfectly happy there as I feel the benefits outweigh the negatives but I don't expect it to be like a "first world " country. You have to decide what is right for you. That is the beauty of travel, in the end those of us lucky enough to do it can choose where to go. I think Cambodia & the people are magic others may be happy in different places.

However, I am smart enough to know that tourist dollars foot the bill for a lot of city services as well as create small business opportunities for locals. Same - I also live in a tourist city. And the common thread of anger here is how much the city spends on things for tourism, but infrastructure for the locals is in bad shape if it exists at all. But, I can't imagine trying to run tourists out. It is the key industry here and without it a lot of locals would be out of a job. Ideally we could get the local government to prioritize both the tourism sector and the locals about equally.

This is the current situation in Lisbon as well, people are done! Our governments are indeed who we should protest agains't primarily, but this is still good though to bring awareness to the tourists themselves as well. People are desperate! Responsible travel is a thing, Barcelona has been knowingly plagued by over-tourism for decades now, which is why people like me stay away from it. So the question is what's wrong with the people who, in also knowing that, continue to go? You can't keep telling us to be mad only at our governments when there is also an obvious lack of responsibility and accountability on your side. Just why do people keep visiting places that are known to be exhausted of over-tourism? What is the point exactly of walking through crowded streets and staying in over-priced accommodation?! To a sane person doing that is senseless. So don't jerk off your own lack of common sense and accountability just because the governments of these countries are also to blame, 'cause facts are that it all starts and ends with you, and the fact that you are the ones who keep choosing to travel to over-crowded places where you are no longer wanted by the locals. It's very easy to put everything on governments and not look at our own behavior and how it creates and contributes to most of the evils of this world. It's time to grow up, and stop looking for escape goats for our own reckless, selfish, self-serving, immature behavior.

Lisbon’s rents are now untenable for locals and many need to move out to the countryside due to the increase in AirBnB rentals. Outside Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve, there are other nice little spots to see. But most tourists want to see those places.

Portugal was always very welcoming, but it's also getting crazy in the main cities. It's impossible now to live here. I live in Porto and 10 years ago, I would go near the river and enjoy the sight (now it's for tourists and 180 families were expelled from living there because of foreign investment), we had a community that worked together and shared values, we had our wonderful Portuguese food, the rental prices were fair... now I can't even breath in the city, because of so much tourism. With that came more crime and violence, more drugs, higher prices, foreign investment and I don't recognize the city anymore. It looks like a themed park. That's the problem of most tourists that travel here. They come because now it's "cool" to come to Portugal and take pictures to post on social media, they don't know anything about the culture and prefer to go to Starbucks than local business, they are too loud, they go on little trains, tuk tuk's, bikes and normal people that need to work, take a long time to get to places, because of so much people here. Tourism is not the problem... mass tourism is. Portugal is beautiful from top to bottom and so many places to visit... why not try other places too? If you lived here you would be angry with this situation too. We all feel this and much more! Try and understand their side too, please.

I got to visit Barcelona in 1982 and this city stole my heart. It’s difficult to see this and to think I wouldn’t be welcomed back. But it seems like most protests it’s somewhat misdirected. They should be at their version of city hall. Squirting people with water is like defacing Stone Henge for environmental reasons. How tourism is being regulated and that money utilized or its affects on housing prices isn’t controlled by any tourist enjoying a meal in a restaurant. And if scenes like this scare off all tourism that will just cause different problems.
