Dior's $2800 Bag Costs Just $57 to Make! | Vantage with Palki Sharma

Dior's $2800 Bag Costs Just $57 to Make! | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Recent investigations have revealed that two of Italy's most prominent luxury fashion houses, Dior and Giorgio Armani, pay a surprisingly low amount to produce handbags that retail for thousands of dollars. Documents examined by the authorities show that Dior paid a supplier only $57 to make bags that sell for about $2,780. So, what explains this stupendous price markup? Are you paying for quality handbags or are you paying for the brand? Palki Sharma answers the questions.

I love how honest you are about everything. when someone is carrying a *esluxy* and you pass them on the street no one can tell whether is fake or real one because you cannot do this much analysis on it. what I hate about LV and why I stopped buying them is that many people assume your bag is fake when they pass you on the street. It's very annoying. one time a woman walked up to me and actually asked me if my bag was "real". after spending almost 2K on a bag and being asked that question was so offensive i stopped carrying them. People look more at the person carrying the bag and assume wrongly whether is real or fake. it is extremely annoying

I worked for 4 years in Prada, 3 months in Dior and mixed branded shops. I agree with the information provided in this video that most of the time ridiculous prices don't represent the quality at all. They teach employees to sell the image and say we are selling emotions rather than product itself. It is just brainwashing.

I would prefer a *esluxy* - a copy of a design I like but without the branding which would make it a replica. When you look at the jaw-dropping greed of these luxury brands coupled with a growing contempt for their customers, their appalling behaviour is a a terrible role model for society. They could clean up their act by making bags with realistic price tags.

I'm not a designer consumer, however, I did buy a pair of PRADA Downtown sneakers that were originally $1070 and bought them on sale for $642 at Nordstrom. I do own a few designer sneakers all purchased on sale. The reason why I bought them, is because they looked well made compared to Nike Jordan's. The PRADA Downtown sneaker is PRADA"S version of the Nike Jordan's. It's made of leather compared to synthetic and as mentioned looked like they were higher in quality. Would you say for $642 that they still aren't worth the price? I wanted a dressy pair of sneakers to wear out at night over gym sneakers was my reason to buy them, not to show off the brand and logo ,which honestly, I can do without.

I watched a documentary from 10 years ago where Kering was exposed for outsourcing manufacturing to contractors that employe exploited chinese migrant workers. Because Kering and other luxury brands want to maintain their Made in Italy status, but want to keep their high profit margins. What they could do is simply open factories in China, but that would mean having to label their products as Made in China. So that's when the contractors come in, instead of making products in China, they bring chinese workers to Italy. These migrant workers have to live in the factory compound in squalor and are paid very little in the sweatshops. If you buy replica bags from China, don't feel guilty, those bags are probably more ethically manufactured than the authentic bags.

I have a masters degree in Digital Marketing and this is exactly what we studied. It doesn't matter what the product is. If you can get the consumer to relate to it and for the image to be expensive and premium, then the customer will pay for. I laugh when I see people who can't afford these products buying them because it's all designed to be a head game and they don't even know it. If you can afford it fine and if you can't afford these products, but you still have to have the look, just buy the "fakes".

For example, an H&M bag usually will not be made of real leather and will have the cheapest, lowest quality hardware. The H&M clothing are mostly synthetic fibers, poor craftsmanship and ill- fitting. On the contrary, the saint Laurent clothing is of the finest wool, silks, cashmere and cotton and the fit is amazing (, especially for a tall person like me). When I wear H&M clothing, nobody says anything, but when I wear a Saint Laurent ensemble (no logos), I get compliments galore. There are a couple of Lipsticks and Nailpolish manufacturers in India who sell these for about Rs.10 each and are exported where labelling is done and are sold for Rs 500 each with so-called leading brands. This is prevalent in all products companies to keep prices astronomically high. This applies to all categories of products.

Handbags are not the only items for whose brand people pay more. The Swiss consumer test examined "no-name" and branded items for sportswear and could not find any difference, as they mostly came from the same production. At least handbags such as Louis Vuitton or Kelly Bags are more of an investment asset, their value increases immensely. Where there was little interest, people invested in handbags if they could afford them.

Companies only get investigated for profiteering when consumers complain. Alas, it's not just the price of producing the goods that is factored in. The companies can point to the millions they spend on marketing, salaries, brand ambassadors, and physical stores as legitimate operating costs. That's why some brands can fail. They, too, are chasing the dragon. It's a vicious cycle driven by exploiting people's needs.
