On Day 21 of our Round The World Trip for food with Star Alliance, we spent the day in Barcelona. Barcelona is an amazing food city, and one of the best places to start eating is at La Boqueria. After eating and wandering, we headed over to Sagrada Família for a breathtaking tour. It was an amazing day of food and attractions in Barcelona.
00:34 Breakfast at Cotton House Hotel - We started off the morning at our hotel by having a quick breakfast. The jamon and selection of cured meats was the highlight.
2:53 Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria - Often known in short just as La Boqueria, this historical market is a food lover's paradise and a pilgrimage destination. We arrived early in the morning and headed first to Bar Pinotxo to eat our second breakfast. I ordered an omelet with eggplant and a plate of garbanzo beans and blood sausage. The dish was simple, but it was incredibly delicious. Additionally, the coffee was extremely good. Total price - 12.80 EUR ($14.04)
6:59 El Quim De La Boqueria - After finishing with the first place of tapas, I wandered over to another legendary tapas bar within La Boqueria market known as El Quim De La Boqueria. It’s a very expensive place, but I knew I wanted to try the fried eggs with baby squid. The dish was a simple combination of ingredients, but it was cooked perfectly, and it was incredibly delicious. I also couldn’t resist a plate of fried chilies. Total price - 32.05 EUR ($35.16) There are dozens of things to eat and try at La Boqueria, and after all the salty food I was ready to have a passion fruit juice. And then finally, to conclude the Barcelona food tour of La Boqueria, I bought a cone of sliced Jamón Ibérico.
14:14 Gothic Quarter, Barcelona Cathedral - After an amazing food tour, we walked around the Christopher Columbus monument and then continued on walking around the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. The Barcelona Cathedral was originally closed when we arrived, but I came back in a few minutes and walked around the Barcelona Cathedral as well.
16:37 Xarcutería La Pineda - Located just around the corner from the Barcelona Cathedral, I headed over to a place called Xarcutería La Pineda (recommended by Chris English), to try the botifarra blanca and a cup of vermouth. It’s an amazing little family run shop with a fantastic array of meats and drinks. Total price - 11.50 EUR
21:25 Basílica de la Sagrada Família - One of the most famous attractions in Barcelona is the Sagrada Familia, a basilica that was famous designed by Antoni Gaudi. I had read and dreamed about visiting for many years, so I was very excited to finally have the chance to visit. What amazed me is how dark and gothic it looks from the outside, yet how light and happy it is on the inside. Sagrada Familia is truly a stunning architectural feat, and an attraction you must visit in Barcelona. Along with visiting the main part of Sagrada Familia, I also bought tickets to go to the Nativity Tower. Going to the top of the tower and walking down was the highlight of visiting. Price - 29.00 EUR per person w/ tower entrance
26:16 Catalan Food for dinner at Restaurant Portolés - For dinner Ying and I walked over to Restaurant Portolés, a local Catalan food restaurant. Some of the main dishes I ordered included Fideuà and Rollitos De Pollo, all of which were delicious. It’s a great restaurant to try in Barcelona. Total price - 26.50 EUR
This was a fantastic day in Barcelona, packed with delicious food and attractions in Barcelona.

For all the comments re. Mark never saying anything tastes bad or is not worth is. Please note his expressions after his first bite. Eyes closed, Head tilts to the left, Huge smile. AMAZING MUST HAVE. Eyes closed , very light head moment to the left, light grin. PRETTY GOOD. Eyes closed, no head moment. DECENT. Eyes open, polite smile, almost a hesitation before describing. Come on, not everything is a competition. Every culture is unique, depends what you enjoy. Plus, there's human factor - people he meets can seem pleasant or not. I hate Mr taster with passion, while the majority of people in the comments love him, so 🤷🏻♀️
GRACIAS AMIGO!!! Personas como tu, son las que hacen aún más grande BARCELONA. :)))))))))))))))))))))))))
I really feel why Mark is so expressive when it comes to what some might find "simple" food. It's the combination that makes it so special, the way it's cooked and the simple seasoning that embraces their own flavors. I'm so glad he is able to appreciate it as much as we do. We have a very famous Bask cook in Spain, named Karlos Arguiñano, who makes these incredible dishes with local foods, taking the best of Spanish cuisine, but when it comes to picking his favorite one of all of them, he always emphasizes the greatness of a simple well done fried egg with green roasted chillis. I just have to say I'm really enjoying watching Mark appreciating every bite he makes of our cuisine :)

"As much as it tastes good".... well isnt that the only thing that matters?! if the best breakfast in Spain costs a little more than average, who cares? i was just in Barcelona a month ago, and i agree there is a lot of delicious, affordable food, but the places at lo Boqueria were a notch above most else. I ate at Pinotxos once and had breakfast and el Quim two mornings in a row. Those fried egg dishes taste even better than they look. it's covered with a seasoned garlic oil that i scraped up with my bread. my wife got the squid with eggs and i got the jamon serrano, and the next day was lucky enough to score the rare/seasonal "little fish" with eggs, available only 1 month out of the year. All amazing and worth every penny. The basic tortilla here was super good also.

I would love to go to Spain one day. What a beautiful place! And the food looks amazing.
19:18 this bread is a signature Catalan staple. It's called pan con tomaca. My Spanish mom made it at least once per day. So it's freshly baked bread with a juicy tomatoes rubbed all over it. Spanish olive oil is then liberally poured over each slice of bread. It is then sprinkled with salt. It's then served immediately.

That oldman in the bar at 5:55 is the real Pinotxo who gives name to the bar. I once had a conversation with him. He has more than 50 years in La Boqueria. I used to have breakfast or just pass for a coffee in his place every week and listen to his stories. He also is one of few people who was honored as Citizen of Barcelona by the Town Council.
I've been in Barcelona with my son on August/September. I also loved La Boqueria! Even a simple potato Tortilla with some olives are sooo delicious 😍😍😍

Great video. Boquería is a wonderful place for sure. The green chillies as you say are not actualy chillies per se, they are called Pimientos del Padrón. Which if they are the original ones, come from an area called Padrón in Galicia. Every now and then one of them may have a kick but they are 90% non spicey. It's very rare actually to find the original ones as they are pre bought by many places in Spain. But the non original ones grown around the country are almost as good (not sure if a Galician would agree but hey).
Mark, when you visit markets please dedicate more time to show all the product stalls, it's really interesting to see what they sell around there.

My introduction to Spain was with my father taking us to our first Spanish restaurant in Baltimore. He started eating what he thought was raisins, but the waiter told him they were snails, then the chef, and the manager and all was happy that all my father wanted was to take it back and remove the snails. The only place I found the Spanish ham is the Italian Deli but they make sure it is their Parma that stands out, then if you forget, they completely cut the fat. I enjoy these trips you take because I won't be able to take trips like that, but you do give good ideas on what I might be able to produce just to try.
Loved, loved loved La Bouquiria. Seafood is awesomely delicious and quick and cheap.

Hi mark! Greetings from spain! First of all i have to say that i love your videos and how you tilt your head xD 2 quick notes: -Pinocho bar is well known in spain cause our international chefs (arzak, arguiñano, jose david) always eat there when they visit bcn. Btw, this is parsley, not cilantro -> parsley is the "go to" fresh herb in spanish cuisine. -31:30 this is melted cheese, and the fruit is a dried prune wich is pretty common in slow-cooked meat dishes. I hope you have enjoyed your visit to bcn, keep up with the good work!!!

Yum, anchovies.
Mark, at exactly 10:52 - 10:53 you said you had another shot of Espresso. Now, although Espresso is commonly found and can be served to you in Spain, we usually have a coffee that is native to us Spaniards. It's called “Café con leche”. It consists of strong coffee (usually Espresso) mixed with scalded milk in approximately equal amounts. And I think that what you had drank there was a Café con leche.
