The so called "friendship" is always "strategic" and transactional. NATO will help you in continuing the never-ending war but you cannot join NATO until you prove your worth (there is a significant damage to your country from a long-running war). Even after that there is no guarantee because you might benefit more from NATO than NATO from you/Ukraine after Russia is weakened.

When you are the biggest and strongest nation, every move become a strategic matter. The problem India has is that it is too chaotic and undisciplined. If India had aligned with America in the 1970's as China did, it could have developed at a rapid pace. Indian politics is too chaotic with too long a vote, too many parties. USA could not shake the resolve of India to stay autonomous when it was less developed, what makes USA think that it can shake India's approach now? Truly said. But at the same time shouldnt forget to align our priorities as I'll say US will be far more beneficial to us in economic standpoint but may be in military standpoint russia might be useful in dealing with china as they have lot more healthy relationship with them compared to US so could negotiate with them to lessen their aggression towards our border but it can also backfire easily if russia decides to stay neutral
