You said nothing about what makes radio control worthless. You rant about it costing twice as much. To me having a watch that can automatically set the time, especially around Day Light Savings time, is well worth paying extra. $100 for this feature seems very fair to me. You have reviewed and recommended more expensive watches that have fewer features (even ignoring the radio control feature), are less accurate, and harder to read (though I prefer analog faces, I don't like sweeping hands). Why is an automatic worth paying hundreds when a radio controlled watch is not worth $100? You mentioned NIST might shutdown WWVB. That is of course a legitimate problem and always will be. Of course while NIST was make my that statement I wouldn't recommend a radio controlled watch. But just because NIST could shut it down doesn't make the feature worthless. You don't see the point in the technology. Fair enough. You view it as overpriced. That stems from the fact you don't see the point in the technology, not from an analysis of pros and cons. This whole video was a rant, contained nothing about the value or lack thereof of the technology. Why is radio control not worth the extra price? Why is a watch that automatically sets itself a useless feature?

Watch collecting is not a rational endeavor, spending thousands on an Swiss movement automatic dive watch that is outperformed by the Japanese solar quartz certified dive watch I'm currently wearing is not rational, and owning 20 watches is not either (don't get me started on "investment"). So why would you expect a rational and utilitarian argument from a vlog about watch collecting?

I can't even begin to tell you the abuse this thing has seen. Never have to set the time, in fact it syncs every day, and it's identical to the time clock at work, that's extremely important for my needs. No battery replacements it's solar. I live in Europe, so this video is more or less pointless for me, since radio signals will continue to work here. That being said, I have a cheap atomic casio (not a G Shock) that cost me 25 euros (less than a good watch strap) It sits on a shelf in my bedroom, never fails to sync every night, always tells split-second perfect time, has an alarm, backlight, timer, world time, perpetual calendar, chronometer. When I pick up one of my mechanical/automatic watches and it's not running I always use that casio as reference time to set it. Also when I'm doing stuff where I could potentially damage my watch (working on my car, mowing the lawn, playing with my dog, etc) I simply wear that casio, it's so cheap that I don't care if it gets scratched or dinged, and so far it has stood up well to the abuse. If you ask me it's been 25 well spent euros.

I totally disagree. 90bucks for the 5610 is absolutely fair. There are other g shocks that's aren't worth what Casio asks for them. For example the 2600$ MR-G. Ok, it's titanium, Sapphire and GPS+Atomic, but it doesn't even have auto illuminator. It goes to sleep everytime the display is in the dark for a few hours, and the only thing to wake it up again is a push on the light button or bright light. So every time I look at the watch the seconds hand is stuck at 12 o'clock parking position and I need to press the light button TWICE to just tell the time. Glad I only payed 500bucks for this otherwise bulletproof tank of a watch that even wears better than the 5610.

I’m in the UK and apart from the clocks in my cars and microwave oven all my quartz watches and clocks are atomic time controlled. It’s a convenience feature, as is automatic winding on my mechanical watches. It would be less of a feature if setting the time were as simple as pulling out and rotating a crown, but setting digital watches seems more complicated than disarming an atomic bomb so I’ve paid to opt out of it.

Maybe the Atomic timekeeping might work better in some places than others, but here in the UK, my GW-7900-1ER has updated at 2:04 am every single morning without fail since I’ve had it for over a year. I absolutely love the fact I never have to set it, including at British summertime, and I love the fact I can always know it’s bang on accurate all of the time. Like I said, definitely NOT a gimmick.

I find the atomic clock radio set feature of a number of these watches to be quite useful. For one they do not need to be connected to a smartphone or need to use gps in order set the time to an exact standard. If the US shuts down their radio station then they will still work in a large part of the world, and in the US can be set either manually or by using a phone app called "clock wave" to set the time to exact time. The argument that price is a major issue might carry more weight if you were recommending purchasing the cheapest digital watch on the market as long as it had all the same features, multiple times, alarms, etc. That being said, I might add that the cheapest digital watch on the market likely has more complications, features, and more accurate time keeping than any mechanical watch made. Where watched are concerned often price is not the final word in the decision making process. I very much enjoy your channel, if not always agreeing with your comments.

The reason I really like atomic watches is the same reason I would never buy an automatic. Even though I know it does not matter in the whole scheme of things, I like my watches to be exact all the time. I have had both of my atomic G-shocks for a very long time so I have gotten my money's worth, but it will be annoying and render those watches useless to me if the atomic signal is discontinued next year. Actually, now I mostly wear a Garmin Fenix 5 running watch so I get the exact time via bluetooth. Hopefully, the government does not find some way to cancel that.

The Casio GWM5610-1 has Atomic time keeping, Solar, world clock, water resistant to 200 m, alarms, auto light, and its a gshock so its tough. All that for under 100 bucks is a pretty fair price in my opinion. Especially since the radio signals are remaining open. The non-atomic version for 40 bucks is pretty basic and only has the water resistant and gshock features. The more expensive version offers much more than just atomic time keeping for the money.

I’m from the UK and I have had my GW-M5610 for nearly two months now. Even if it the atomic wasn’t a useful feature, which I find it is as I even set my other digital Casio watches to it, but it is a cool feature which after all is why we are here, because we are interested in the different qualities and mechanisms not to mention the added benefits of the 5610 like world time and solar charge which add to the cool factor and talking points. Also on Amazon at the moment the DW-5600E is less than £13 cheaper than the 5610 which just makes the 5610 seem like a complete bargain which in reality I think it is, it is just that the 5600 is arguably more of a bargain

My first good watch was/is (still works even if the acrylic crystal is thrashed) a Casio Waveceptor Tough Solar. Trust it more than even my phone. Yea, put it in the window to receive the signal, $100 back 18+ years ago, maybe 20? But it still works even though it needs yet another strap replacement, and the only other attention it needs is sunlight, sit in a window at night (no prob, why are you sleeping with your watch?), and occasional hand realignment. Your love letter to the Mudmaster GWG-1000 made that my "Grail". I'm wearing its successor, the GWG-2000, as I type this. And yes, it goes in the window at night to receive atomic time. Y'gotta have an atomic radio clock in your life. Why not be your watch too?

Hello from 2021... said radio waves are still sending signals, and I just purchased my Casio G-Shock GW-M5610 for 65 inflated dollars ($80 CAD) so I'm not complaining about paying too much for the privilege of being better than you, lowly 5600 owner ;) ... But then again, maybe I truly am the loser in this scenario, because my city of YVR (Vancouver, Canada) won't sync to the same time as LAX, despite being in the same time zone. This forces me to sync to a city that I no longer like in order to get the correct time (YVR shows as one hour late - 10pm shows as 9pm). This must be a programming error by Casio, which is bizarre from a company that probably should know how to program sophisticated digital timepieces. Makes me want to start my own watch channel just to rant!!! I'm wondering how many other cities are incorrectly configured, or if this mistake only affects a small batch of modules. The watch in question was bought pre-owned, albeit in unblemished condition, but it was originally purchased new in Australia, so therefore if the batch of defective modules was isolated to the Australian market, most owners would never know that YVR doesn't work. So far all other functions work as advertised.

Need a good diver under 100 that i never have to pop open for a battery change and therefore risk water resist (it happened on my former watch and it sucked. the shop that did it denied responsibility) . I realized later it synced the time every day, which is also kinda cool I guess. You can literally pop it onto your wrist and forget about it until the funeral.

I am skeptical that NIST will close down the transmitter. Saying they would in their initial budget submission is just a way to attract attention. NIST actually does a lot of cool stuff, but the general public has never heard of them and wouldn't miss them if NIST stopped doing them, so they had to threaten to cut their most public-facing service. Kind of like the National Park Service trying to close high profile facilities like the WWII and Viet Nam Memorials that aren't normally staffed (and paying emergency staff to keep people out) during the government shutdown(s).

You can't say the 5610 variations are under $100 with solar and atomic aren't worth it and then say the gx55b1 that's more expensive and doesnt have atomic is worth it, when it's just a chunkier square. This wasn't fair for atomic in your comparisons. Also this whole video only really applies to the US if the radio transmitter goes down (which it might not, and also you have two other transmitters which may be usable for atomic timekeeping, if the one going down is even the one that's being used for atomic timekeeping). I get it. Paying an extra $60 for atomic timekeeping does seem silly. It should be more expensive, but this is definitely an over-inflated price for sure. I'd still rather have an m5610 with multiband 6 than get a gx56bb1 without it any day of the week. In fact I also paid brand new retail price of ~£190 for the mtg-910d-2ver the mission impossible 3 gshock which has all the same features as an m5610 for twice the price, so yes, atomic is definitely worth it as far as I'm concerned.

Before I got into mechanical watches, I was interested in one of the Citizen versions as a watch that can both set and charge itself seemed very convenient. Nowadays, they (specifically Citizen, not G-Shock) just seem to run too expensive despite how useful they could be as a master to sync the rest of your collection to without needing to log on to a site. That potential benefit has made me interested in a Marathon atomic time wall clock, however, which kind of makes me wonder if Canada would pick up the role for North America if the US ends the signal?

The Tough Solar, with its 10 year battery life, alone makes the gwm5610 a better buy. It also has a power save function, and auto EL mode in addition to world time (perfect watch when traveling). As for the atomic feature, as of today WWVB is still being broadcast out of Colorado, and for people outside the US and Canada this is a non-issue. Even still, if the signal is stopped in the future, one could easily download an emulated version of the JJY signal from Japan, then use the world time function for the city they live in thus saving the atomic time function for North American users. So, have to disagree with this video.
