Watch this before buying a Color ebook reader (e-reader)!

Ғылым және технология

Kobo will probably soon release two new colour e-readers, a Kobo Clara Color and a Kobo Libra Color that will use Kaleido 3 colour e-ink displays. But colour ebook readers is not as good for normal text ebook readers. It makes the display brightness and sharpness a lot worse. The experience get very dull and blurry. Color ebook readers is only good for reading color comics, color mangas and do other stuff like browsing the web, social networks and reading the news. Not for reading books. Too Dull, Dark and Blurry displays for that.

I do a lot of activities that tire my eyes: Drawing, coloring, writing, cross-stitching, and of course, a lot of reading. I have been reading e-books as well as physical books for years. I started with Nook, continued with Kobo Aura, now I have Kobo Libra 2. I was excited to hear about color e-readers coming out, but from what you said, they're not good for the eyes. I don't want to tire my eyes any further. Thanks very much for the information 🙏🏻💐

Well it is still the same e-ink technology that is great for your eyes. The downside with color is basically that they have a darker display panel that is harder to see if you don’t raise the front light quite high. So if you want to use an e-reader for colored content or drawing then go for it. Don’t buy it if you only will use it for B&W content. Then your Libra 2 is one of the best on the market.

Thanks for a great comparison. Personally my eyes are pretty backlight sensitive and I don't use ereader lighting in daylight, and always on the lowest setting at night, nor do I crave the "paperwhite" super white background which you don't get in real life paperbacks (only glossy mags etc). But not having colour highlighting or colour menus has always bugged my about my ereaders, don't ask me why ... when 90% is spent reading b&w text it seems crazy. Basically i am more likely to pick one of these colour ereaders up than my trusty old Boyue e reader which stays on the shelf. I will have a look at the Libra Colour in store when it lands just to check its not too dark. Thanks again.

I compared it to a black and white kindle e-reader and my Kobo was darker but not as much as expected from reading online... It is darker but really not a huge deal. Sometimes i don't even use brightness if there's enough light in my room. First of all, you said the PPI of Kaleido 3 is 150, and for black and white readers it's 300. That is not entirely correct. PPI of Kaleido 3 is 150, AND underneath it is also 300 PPI layer screen for black and white. The reason why it's not reaching the same brightness levels with a normal bw reader is the reason you've already explained, the screen is two layered. Secondly, your Bigme Max Color is not even Kaleido 3, it's Kaleido Plus which is 117PPI for its color and 227 for BW which partly explains its underwhelming brightness level. The fair comparison for the upcoming Kobo color readers is the Pocketbook Inkpad Color 3 which is using the same Kaleido 3 technology, and I would say Inkpad Color 3 is pretty impressive ebook reader for its versatility and readability. I would also argue that if the Libra 2 is already bright enough without using frontlight, then what do you even need the frontlight for? Kaleido 3 with 30% frontlight brightness is enough for me to enjoy reading comparable to bw. I own Kobo Touch which doesn't even have frontlight, and the only time I can't read it is at night when the lights are off. In Kobo color I can still read in pitch dark because there is a front light! The only clear downside is if you're going to read indoors with poor lighting, which means you're going to keep the frontlight on mostly, in other words it consumes more battery. However since Kobo Libra color's battery is bigger than the Kobo bw, I would assume the battery performance would be more or less the same. And you've not even talked yet about the improved speed performance of Kaleido 3 over Carta 1200, it is faster and more responsive. I would only consider a bw if they released a Carta 1300 in the form factor of the Libra, but they only have it available in the size of a Clara. It's basically the same with only improved speed performance and better contrast, but reading pdfs and magazines would not be a good experience. The real improvement here is ultimately the color, Kaleido 3 is the best eink technology out of the market and paired that with Kobo which I personally think has the best software interface, with a price of about 260 CAD is a great deal. How much is Inkpad color 3? About 460 CAD. 💯

If highlighting in different color is more important than a crisp and clear display then go for the Libra color. Clara 2E or Clara color doesn’t support that. I don’t know if you can do that on pdfs though. Sorry.

An ebook reader doesn't make sense for looking at mangas or BD with its poor colouring and performance. You are better of getting a cheap Android tablet with millions of colours and its huge versatility. There are also great apps for reading books too. The new e-readers are trying to become something that is not needed for its basic purpose.

It is a “it depends”: - type A: you mostly read mangas/BD/magazines and surf the web. You’re better off using an lcd tablet - type B: you only read books. You’re better off with a black and white ereader. - type C: you read everything. You’re better off with a color ereader. Reading books with an LCD or OLED display is very hard on the eyes and I totally advise against. I also advise buying an 7,8” or bigger screen, smaller is way too small. That is not to say that the tech behind these color ereaders has to improve massively in contrast and color richness. Nevertheless I use my black and white Boox Ultra screen even with KZread and it is usable!!! That didn’t happen some years ago. I imagine that in 4/5 years this tech will be useful for most people. The price is though too high

@@ricarmig Agree A, B but C not so much. Modern LCD tablets all have "eyes protection" setting (blue light reduction) and auto-brightness control. A myriad of reading apps where you can change the text background colour or texture that you can't do on e-reader. LCD tablets are way quicker too. Frankly, colour content materials looks so primitive on the new e-readers. If I had the choice to bring only one tablet on a trip, my Android tablet (9 inches) with its versatility will be the one. That said, IMO, I'll give it a few months before we see a new e-book colour technology as buyers will not be satisfied with the present version. I read some people have already return the new colour Kobos.

@@armagedon515 modern screens have “blue light reduction” which is really nothing but changing the colors a bit. @@armagedon515 I know what I’m talking about and the color of the image is only a small part of the blue light emission. The technology behind it is also important.
