Watch This Before Buying a Coleman ATV!!! - Coleman 125cc ATV Catastrophic Failure in Just 8 Months

We purchased the Coleman AT125UT new from Tractor Supply on 12/17/20 and something inside the gearbox broke and locked up the drivetrain on 8/16/21. We have had nothing but breakdowns out of the ATV the entire time we owned it and Coleman ignored the reports during the warranty period. Once I reported this total failure, they responded that it is out of warranty so there is nothing they will do. Buyer Beware.

I have bought the extended warranty for 12 months ...can't say we have had trouble like all you guys and my 9 y old thrashes this thing...have owned it for 5 months it' runs on our 30 arc mud path its been up to the middle of the engine in our pound and pulled just fine..the only issues we have had so far is few bolts came lose...in my opinion the one we have I'd give a 4 out of 5 ...maybe months down the road I will change my mind but for now and at least 4 hrs a day mudding and thrashing on this 125 it's stood up great in my opinion

I bought one for my son in the spring of 2021. This weekend he wanted to ride but it wouldn't start. After watching some videos and checking the electronics I found that I wasn't getting signal from the stator. When I opened it up I found that one of the bolts worked its way out and demolished the stator. I have one on the way but I'm concerned about what's next. I wish I had known the extent of the problems that are sure to come. Good video.

I will probably be binge watching your videos next weekend. Especially the ones about the Coleman ATV. I paid a lot more than you did for nearly the exact same ATV, only rebranded as KAYO. Hopefully, it will work out better for me since I bought it through a Honda, Yamaha, Can-Am dealer and it has a 54 month "Service Plan" which covers everything except for the normal wearable parts like brakes and tires. I was so excited about the purchase until I saw your videos and realized that mine is nearly the same model as yours. It is just a rebranded Tao Tao or (insert any Chinese brand out there). I was duped by the marketing and sales pitch. I paid $2400 after taxes, "destination," and "prep fees." I have never felt like such a sucker. Then, I spent another $220 dollars on top of that for the "Service Plan." I feel like walking in front of a train right now.

Well, I will say this, and I tried to express this in the videos. My son is very hard in everything he touches. He has showed this machine no mercy. I am certain that has contributed to some of our issues. My biggest pain was that Coleman wouldn’t stand behind anything. With the service plan, you may do just fine. I wish you the best of luck. We still have my sons running and he enjoys it. That is worth a lot. 👍

This same exact thing is going on with us. We purchased a Coleman UT125 from a store where we live and this same thing has been happening. We live in the caribbean so there aren't any ATV Dealers or any of that. But ACE Hardware started selling these and we decided to get one. The first day we picked it up the spark plug was broken in it and we had to replace it and that was day ONE! It broke on us about less that 4 miles with it about a week and wont crank. We have been going back and fourth with Coleman for the past month about us getting a refund for it. We do have a Coleman AT-200B which so far has been a beast. We haven't had any problems with it yet and have owned it for about a month now.

Sorry you had this experience. We have a Coleman (Tao Tao) also and we are having a great experience. Fingers crossed. On all my ATVs, I do check the nuts and bolts for tightness regularly and I also use Locktite on everything. I can tell these are not racing machines or work horses! They definitely are for light use and recreation only. The only abuse ours get is when I plop mt 200 lb body on it and tear around the yard for fun. The kids are much easier on it. Not fond of the throttle control screw when it is set for low speed riders. Personally I think that could make the clutch slip and wear prematurely.

I purchased one of these in December 2020, and it made one ride around the yard before the engine threw a valve and seized. I took it back to TSC and got a replacement, and it's been "OK". It doesn't run well from what I think is a crappy carburetor (which cannot be tuned). It's "better" than the generic TaoTao's because it has disc brakes all around, proper working headlights. I'd still save my money for something else if it was going to be more than something for my sons to tear up my yard with.

If this has the forward/neutral/reverse gear shift pattern, and a heal/toe shifter, a rider can press on the toe or heal part while riding. This can cause problems by unknowingly forcing a shift under load.

  • @PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead

    @PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead

    2 жыл бұрын

I can see that, but that wasn’t the case here. His had a hand lever shifter. What caused this problem, I’m convinced is the poor tensioner/idler pulley setup. It failed once causing the chain to come off at high speed and the chain jammed in the case. I replaced everything and it failed again, this time it broke teeth on the sprocket and I figure that is what caused the gears to break internally. I adjusted the chain tension regularly. 🤷🏼‍♂️ It is what it is…

If ours break or is beyond repair they I’ll atleast get the run down of quading. Amazon has replacement parts too. I’m soon doing a mikuni carb on ours to see if we can squeeze a tad bit more power out. My kids have had theirs for 8-9 months with the hard weekend use here or there though. Rough riding through trails and for hours at times. Some loose parts and bolts but nothing else. We change our oil every three to four trips 16-20 hrs use and clean filters every time as it’s always dusty where we ride. We always use non-ethanol 92 octane too. Tie rod ends and chain chain maintenance is a daily just about every time out routine maintenance.... Another thing I have found out with my coolster is the wiring harness is a disaster barely tucked up underneath the plastic that was another thing I did was went around took care of that here's the one year maintenance list replaced carburetor battery gas tank front shocks primary sprocket put three tail lights on it still haven't got a tail light to work

I've had 1 bad engine in 14 years on Chinese ATV's. They are all made in the same factory basically, Gio and Tao engines are reliable but since Covid started they have rushed orders from the factories but most anomalies are small in nature that we take care of before the customer takes possession. Much of the reliability comes into play with both proper assembly and PDI at the dealer level and again at the ownership level with making sure everything is tight on a regular basis. Anything that comes persistently loose can be corrected with lock washers or blue Loctite. Many other issues are how they are used/abused. I've seen some last 8-9 years and others that are 4 months old that looks like its been ridden for 7-8 years. EVERY screw, nut/bolt needs to be tightened and rechecked after the first hour of riding. Many customers do refuse to put a wrench on anything thinking the atv will maintain itself and ride with loose components for quite awhile and wonder why there are cascading issues with other failed parts. Proper PDI is key. Many dealers just assemble and don't fully PDI. Properly assembled, PDI'd and maintained and I would pit any Tao/Gio motor against most name brand units any day of the week. Many also do not install the proper oil before starting and leave the factory packing/testing oil in the engine for weeks/months of use. Its not actual motor oil and thats the easiest way to blow a clutch or run into other internal issues (engine will run but go nowhere). Wet clutch oil must be installed before starting or within 30 min max of riding. Many do not do this or are not told this needs to be done. I also recently had a 2nd bad engine Which Gio replaced for me under their 6 mo warranty and I installed for the customer at no charge despite it being a parts only warranty as a one time courtsy. incredibly easy to drop a new engine in these machines 40min to remove max 1 hour to install for one person. I then found out (AS I SUSPECTED and the customer finally admitted to) that one of the children using the machine had kicked it into neutral and then REVERSE on the fly while the ATV was moving forward, at significant speed. Many failures can be attributed to poor instruction and supervision on the parents' part as was this case. During Covid and unprecedented number of families that had never owned any off road vehicle in the past bought these machines for bored kids for some instant gratification and improper instruction, maintenance was the result of seeing increased reports like this and increased general trashing of the Chinese brands. I fully instruct all my customers both verbally before buying and with printed info/maintenance sheets which many lazily choose NOT to read. I can't believe that after 14 years I need to start telling people NOT to shift a moving atv into the opposite gear but we seem to be moving closer with every passing year to a world of idiocracy in this respect. Have I seen an unprecedented number of brain farts from the factory in the last 2.5 years? Yes I have but I remedy every one before the customer gets the machine. How they choose to use it, maintain it is then up to them or they can bring to me to do so for a fee. Generally I have had very good luck with Tao and Gio which is why I continue to sell them and have a 4.9/5 rating on facebook but proper basic maintenance, preventative maintenance and instruction for children (some of which do not listen well and love to abuse their things excessively) is a must. Since Covid began I have heard of an unprecedented number of customers mentioning their 2020/2021 $16k Can Am's and other name brands across the board needing service with premature failures and being in the shop excessively so its not just Chinese Brands. If you're not sure if your kids will like the activity/sport then I still believe throwing extra money down the drain for a name brand is insane . If they get enthusiastic and advanced with the sport, spend the extra money on name brand for the 2nd unit for sure. Customer recently bought his 4th machine from me since 2018 the other day and no major issues on any of them. Unfortunately factory brain farts do happen but most issues are not serious but I Have found just as many or more issues arising at the user level. One guy didn't change the oil for 4 years. Can't believe engine was still running. The need for instant gratification for bored kids and recent increased levels of inexperienced ownership are partially to blame for the rise in reports of failures. I have sold over 200 of the same model you have in the last 2 years alone and have had 2 bad clutches and one flaky carb that's it. Both bad clutches were due to customer neglect after they bought in the crate DIY assembly to save $150 and not listening to a word I said or the sheets they signed about changing the oil out before riding. 8-10 weeks later insert Blown Clutch. The 179 units I sold with proper PDI and Proper high grade oil installed that had regular tightness inspection and subsequent oil changes done at 20-30 hour intervals by the customers had NO serious issues what so ever. I do concede that general frame build quality is better on virtually any large name brand but as far as mechanics/engines go I would pit any of these Chinese engines as in the Block and everything in it against Honda, Polaris, Yamaha, CanAm etc at 3x the cost any day of the week.

Boy do I wish I went on this website and looked at the reviews before I bought my Coleman ATV, the first one I purchased from a tractor supply store that delivers to my house by third-party person that knows nothing about ATVs this is our first all week purchased you put the oil in the gas in it and it was rubbing at a high RPM I told my son just drive it you know you got to working in a little my son calls me 5 minutes later and tells me that the change fell off I drive to him and find out that there is no screws holding the sprocket on not one I called Tractor Supply and I said how can you sell and deliver an ATV not even before you let it go my son said he got badly hurt. One screw I would even mind if it was one stroke not one so the guy says if you want to return it alright forgot the day that was supposed to be delivered the guy from Tractor Supply cosme says the e-brake is broken you still want it we while they're out of stock everywhere so I really didn't have a choice I sent it back. Got my money what was the somebody who had purchased it once prior to me buying it got my son I thought it was his fault that all these things were going wrong on it I told him he's too rough on it but meanwhile I'm reading this review it's not him it's the machine itself that's sad

I have a little Chinese atv myself. Here's the way I look at it. When you buy a machine at 25% of the cost of a name brand machine, you're buying a kit to build yourself. You need to take the whole thing apart and reassemble it with thread locker. You need to adjust the valves because none of the Chinese engines have been run tested or tuned in any way. Those engines are clones of a Honda engine from 1976. That's not a joke. The thousands of dollars you save is for your labor. My atv is 11 years old and has never had a serious failure. The most serious issue is the rear brake system has failed twice. Most recently, today. But I know when I can buy an entire brake system for $25, it's not going to last long. lol

Hello my friend. I need your help. I have a Kayo 125 ATV and it looks to be very similar to the Coleman. Anyway, My dad (Grandpa) was helping me change the oil in my daughter's ATV. He took out the wrong bolt, not the drain bolt. A tube, approximately 2-13/16" long and a spring approximately 4-3/8" came out when he took out the bolt and we don't know which order they go in or which direction. Any ideas? I don't have access to a service manual and I doubt one even exists. It looks like it is some sort of valve for the forward and reverse function. Please help me.

Most of those kids bikes are Chinese made in some way or another , can am DS, Yamaha raptor 90, Kawasaki, the only dependable one is the Honda TRX 90 and the older Suzuki LT 2 strokes. I had 3 can am DS 90X models, two older ones 2010,2014 and a new 2019. The 2019 was at the dealer more then my son rode it. I finely got fed up did some research and fixed it myself and it ran perfect after I did the work to it. Don’t buy the name brands either as it’s just more money for parts and service at the dealers is horrible. I wonder how those KAYO bikes hold up as I see a lot of slightly used ones in AZ. I’m guessing not so good lol. I moved my kids up to some Suzuki Z-250’s as soon as I could and they are great bikes. 🙂

I did a lot of research on these chines ATV's. The only one I thought was a good ATV is the KAYO. They been around for a while and there are dealerships out there. You can't find a Tao Tao or a Coleman dealership. A lot of people buy them and the next day their on KZread saying their wonderful ATV's. But 6 months later they're saying their garbage. I looked into a Kawasaki KFX 90 but they want $3,049. Out the door with tax and shipping you're close to $3,500. Now the Kayo Predator 125 is $1,799. Out the door probably around $2,200. Maybe look into a KAYO for your kid. I'm pretty sure the Drive train of the KAYO's are a exact copy of the HONDA drive trains. The owner of KAYO was a Engineer for HONDA for over 10yrs. Then he decided to start his own business and formed KAYO. But from what I gathered on the KAYO brand it's pretty good so far. They're new to the U.S. but been in Europe for a while and have a following over their. Other than maybe not so bright headlights or they have a remote kill button so if your kid gets to crazy you can shut off the ATV, sometimes that malfunctions and some other minor little things, from what I've read they're good. I'm going to try the KAYO Predator 125 for my kid. Hopefully i'll have good luck with it. I'll let you know what my experience is this summer after he rides it for a few months...lol

How ironic ours is croaked out at 9 months I've had to fix it twice. Biggest waste of money I blew in a while

Honestly the issue is that Coleman had it built. The build quality is absolutely terrible because Coleman wanted an even cheaper version then Taos. If they spent just an extra hr on assembly and put locktite on each bolt they would last year's. The problem is the Chinese factories the engines and frames are put together in, are run by inexperienced women and young men that don't know how to properly tighten a bolt to begin with or use said locktite. Combine that with a company like Coleman also wanting a chunk of change to sell them it's gonna be the cheapest of the cheap labour even for China.

@@PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead a few years ago I bought coolster for my daughter. Had to work on it all the time. Engine ran good, rear suspension was trash. Sold it and bought her a Honda Recon. Recently saw the Coleman at a tractor supply and thought it looked like it could hold up a little longer and it would be a good starter for my son. Well.......maybe not.
