Watch Julia Roberts Move From Joy to Panic in ‘Ben Is Back’ | Anatomy of a Scene

In “Ben Is Back,” Lucas Hedges plays the title character, a heroin addict who returns home from rehab to be with his family at Christmas. Julia Roberts portrays his mother, Holly, who has welcomed her son with a mixture of joy and trepidation.
In this scene, Holly is taking her son shopping, but what begins as a loving trip to the mall turns into a moment of panic. The film’s writer and director, Peter Hedges (also Lucas’s father), discusses the nuances of the scene.

1:17 - 1:18 In that second...the moment, the day, their lives change...again. Addiction is a disease and it ruins every moment of every day...one day at a time is all addicts have...& sometimes they can only count on one moment at a time. 🖤 This is a great movie in its entirety with even greater actors holding it together in every scene.

When I see life around, I sometimes feel sad. When I see the same life in Hollywood films, I also sometimes sad, but this sadness is warm and bright. And after that, even films about the end of the world are not terrible for me. I even sometimes want to become a bad guy and successfully rob a bank. Hollywood is the real vitamins of life.

The most annoying thing about this video is the nasal-toned narration explaining the obvious.

Yeah I kind of agreed at first but I think it was good for two reasons but in a way it wasn't really supposed to be. 1. Although I agree with the sentiment here I think his passion while describing the scene is nice and quite rare I find. I think most directors who come on here seem so removed and uninterested and monotone and I like how he wasn't. 2. I kind of think it's better that he was speaking over it so much as an unintended byproduct I think it was good. Because I didn't really experience the scene as it was supposed to. So when I go and see it I can see it how it was supposed to the first time.
