Watch in the Box Episode 9 | Bob's Watches

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Episode 9 of Watch in the Box is here and our season is almost coming to an end!
For the 9th episode of our Watch in the Box video series, we take a look at one of the most unusual and least discussed Rolex watches of all time - the reference 19018 Oysterquartz Day-Date.
During the 1970s, the Swiss watch industry was in a state of panic due to the advent of the quartz movement. While many manufacturers went out of business or were acquired during these years, others embraced the new technology to try to stay competitive in a rapidly changing industry, including Rolex, who rolled out their very own line of watches with quartz movements: the Oysterquartz collection.
The Rolex Oysterquartz collection consisted of the Oysterquartz Datejust, the Oysterquartz Day-Date, and the Oysterquartz Date. Additionally, to match their modern battery-powered movements, Rolex gave their new Oysterquartz watches redesigned cases that embrace a more modern and angular aesthetic with integrated bracelets.
At the time Rolex Oysterquartz watches were quite expensive and represented cutting-edge examples of Rolex’s latest and greatest technologies. While relatively few Rolex Oysterquartz watches were manufactured and sold - especially the solid 18k Day-Date Oysterquartz ref. 19018 - they are some of the most unusual and non-traditional Rolex watches ever created.
Watch Episode 9 of our Watch in the Box video series to learn more about the ref. 19018 Rolex Oysterquartz Day-Date, and discover the fascinating history behind this rare and highly unusual, battery-powered Rolex watch!

Thanks for doing this series! This channel and your website have made me want to learn more, and more, about Rolex Watches. My Dad collected and wore many fake Rolex watches before he passed. I think my desire for one started there. This was a good lesson on the quartz movement. Thanks again!!!

"The Rolex Datejust is an absolute classic, but when you bring diamonds into the equation, and it is not from a source like us that promises 100% genuine Rolex timepieces, "authentic" and "genuine Rolex" can mean very different things. Just because something is made with authentic diamonds does not mean that is makes your watch worth more. There is a big difference between diamonds set by Rolex at the factory and diamonds added to a watch later after it was originally sold. The first step you should take is verifying that the watch and bezel are both genuine to the manufacturer: aka made by Rolex. If the bezel is custom/aftermarket/etc. it is not made by Rolex, and even if the diamonds are genuine, it is NOT a genuine Rolex component. We wrote about this very topic on our blog - feel free to read up on the subject (link below), and ask us any necessary questions! www.bobswatches.com/rolex-blog/resources/adding-diamonds-luxury-watch-value.html

I found one at a youth ranch for 4$ and it has glow in the dark features. The band is different but still has the Rolex symbol on the spring bar It's gold and silver.

Hi guys in your opinion what would you do, I have a 1996, mint, diamond dial, bi-mental Rolex Oysterquartz just fully serviced by Rolex with box and papers. My question is would you keep it as it may go up in value over the next few years or get rid and use the money towards something else? No worries if you can’t answer this but would massively appreciate it if there was a response.

Bob, I have 2 of these S/S and Au. But I am pretty sure they are fakes. They take batteries. Rolex never made ones that take Renata 395 batteries? thx

I just picked up a day date for $5 that’s ticking and had a battery. It’s gotta be fake... right?

  • @EightiesTV

The problem is that the majority of the market segment buying luxury watches does so because it's a status symbol. The full second tick is so closely associated with being fake that it poisons the perceived value as a status symbol. Anyone with an eye can see this is a solid gold case and you'd need to look no further. But you couldn't sell this for 50 bucks on a Detroit basketball court. The market for this watch is very limited, moreso than the already limited market for luxury watches in general.

I have owned three Rolex watches, a Datejust, a President, and a fine ladies formal. Each had a Rolex movement. We were proud to own them and share the Rolex story with friends. When the quartz version came out, I was horrified that Rolex would cheapen their previously impeccable reputation and place their name on a computer (it's not a 'watch') and sell it as a rolex. It was laughable then, and still is today. A Quartz is not a movement, it has no craftsmenship, no history, just a chip a couple of gears, and a battery. That is not what Rolex is about. They soon discovered that the public turned their back on this fake, and stopped making them. We, on the other hand, have passed our Rolex watches to others family members, the next generation will continue to enjoy them. In my view, Rolex should have bought them all back and run them through a grinder!
