And thats the proper way its done pete .....just a tip if i may if you attach a cheap canadian tire tarp under your roost . sprinkle a bit of saw chips or hay .Every morning you take a pail an a small scoop and mini rake you will get all the nights poop an urine every morning your coop floor will stay so clean .just takes 3 mins and saves cleaning the floor less often and you dont even have to bend over . good job on the spurs pete . PROPER WAY .
Your way is going to grow back sooner and still leave a vulnerable tender spike. The best way is to use an electric handsaw with a short, sharp blade, or a small hacksaw, or a Dremel saw outfitted with a sander. Very carefully and firmly cut the spur and leave about 3/4 to one inch snub. Apply styptic powder for antiseptic and stop small bleeding. Best if you have a helper holding the rooster and the other doing the trimming. It will grow back and repeat process in about a year.
I didn't think it would be so interesting. I never gave any thought to rooster spurs, but that is pretty cool.
Around my place they don't live long enough to grow spurs that long. As soon as they start crowing they start looking tasty.

Good detail and its obvious that your chickens don't mind you getting close to them. What I don't understand is why you let the spur get so long before treating it.

Tough stuff for sure
This seems weird but I used a goop type glue in a plastic tube and put the tube over the spur. We called it his tube socks. The tubes fell off months later along with the spur. It was creepy and weird.
Blue Kote is the worst thing you can use.
