WATCH | George building collapse exposes regulatory gaps, calls for private sector oversight

Liatel Construction, the main contractor for the George collapsed building development, was not registered with the Construction Industry Development Board - this was revealed by Public Works Minister Sihle Zikalala on Monday.
The CIDB is a public entity created to promote South Africa’s construction industry and develop skills.

Pumping this situation up for political expediency. This happened with that building burning down in Gauteng as well. What happened because of that? Nothing.

If the Construction Industry Development Board (cidb), a schedule 3A public entity, is governed by government then ultimately the Public Works Minister Zikala bears the blame for not running a cadre tender tight ship, and he should be dismissed. If not, someone at the top of the management chain failed.

Now the second tragedy in South Africa, where foreign nationals feature heavily. The first tragedy, the Joburg building fire, involved illegal occupation by foreign nationals, and now the George building collapse, where allegedly overwhelmingly foreign nationals were employed, and died. And just today, we hear the unemployment rate for South Africans is at its highest level yet. These companies employ undocumented foreign nationals, as a way to circumvent employing South Africans, which means the payment of UIF and other labour protections, including safety measures. These companies, are basically involved in just another form of human exploitation and trafficking. The Western Cape Department of Labour really dropped the ball here, just like the City of Johannesburg. Imagine how many more undocumented foreign nationals work without labour and safety regulations, at building sites all over the country, while South Africans languish at home, without jobs.

It is clear that the construction industry, is not controlled strictly enough. Contractors are not registered with NHBRC but they are erecting building daily and do contract work daily. Something needs to be done

How does water "run" in concrete? If not flow in a culvert or any stormwater system? Been in construction for many years now, building major structures. Very curious how I might have missed that. Perhaps there was a gap in my education
