No. 2 reasons, 1 it would be a total waste of time to spend months negotiating with people who will vote to stay as they will try to fuck it from the off. 2 It would influence public opinion. You vote then you have as much time as you need to sort something out. The answer can't just be 'no' because you think that the government couldn't implement it, that would defeat the object, they can but there are a lot of strong opinions to juggle.

While I think direct democracy is interesting, it does depend on an informed populace. 4 years later but to give context to what’s happening here: Parliament had not passed the brexit deal that Theresa mays government was negotiating. The house was basically deadlocked between mps that thought the deal didn’t go far enough, or went too far, or didn’t want brexit to happen at all. This vote was something called an indicative voting round, several options were proposed for what to do, including having a second public referendum. If an option got majority support nothing would happen but the idea was it could show everyone which options had the most support. This vote actually caused the end of Theresa May, after the indicative vote failed she attempted to rally the cabinet around her deal, but boris Johnson and several others refused to back it less than a day later, causing may t9 resign as there was no way for her to resolve the deadlock . The deadlock was eventually resolved by Boris Johnson, who became pm and threw every mp that wouldn’t support his deal out of the Conservative Party and triggered an election, after which he had a large majority willing to pass his deal through.

Entertainment-wise I agree. But while American Congressional sessions are just as divided and just as dysfunctional, at least Roberts Rules of Order allow a person to speak and require others to be quiet while (s)he does so. In my opinion It's a better system, and at least it USED TO allow politicians who were genuine leaders who cared about the country to get things done. Apparently there is just no hope of that happening now under either system.
