Washer With a Removable Agitator? Is This GOOD? WTW5057LW Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Top-load washing machines have offered two styles of washing systems - with or without agitator based on your needs. But now, Whirlpool offers a removable agitator that can let you adapt the washing machine to your needs. Is it a good idea, or just a useless gimmick? In this video, we run the washing machine, talk a LOT about the agitator and plate system, and what we found when we took the system apart and explored the system.

    I bought this washer 19 months ago and it’s been serviced twice, once for wire harness, & just a week ago, the motor, & capacitor…So now it would cost more to fix it, then what it costs…I ordered a Speed Queen TC5 a week ago, & it should be getting delivered in the next two weeks. We’re going to keep the Whirlpool dryer that we matched with this Whirlpool washer. Great informative video.

    I was undecided about returning this washer. I hear you, Maytag Man, and I hear you, owners of this machine. My washer lid will not lock, thus the machine does not work. I've had this machine for 4 days and I haven't been able to use it. I'm waiting for the service guy. When I researched for a fix, I learned a few more problems with this machine. The lid lock is a common problem, it either won't unlock, or it won't lock at all. Another common problem, is the the control panel fails. None of the reset or lock control suggestions worked. I'm very capable of following directions, so I know that the problem is not the fault of this consumer. I can see the many threads getting caught up in that impeller when I wash the cleaning rags. I suspect water will constantly be sitting in that impeller, thus stinking and molding. I leave the lid open on my washer when it's not in use, to dry it out, as recommended by the experts. Thanks for the video, and the owner experiences. This machine is going back!

    I know, I just got mine 3 days ago and noticed that it add no roll over action and the close do not get submerged. The fact that the agitator start moving with only 2 inches of water at the bottom can wear down the fiber of your clothing prematurely. It's garbage, I bought it at Costco and it going back, I'm probably going to get the commercial grade Maytag. Nice roll over action, kinda ratcheting stepper agitator with water momentum timming. Why to they make efforts to make things the wrong way, nowadays?? To sell you a washing machine every 5 years!!

    I like 👍 the old school 🏫 Whirlpool and Kenmore washing machines from the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s. The have a FULL SIZE agitator, and a LARGE CAPACITY tub 🛀. Even the motor is three quarters of one ☝️ horsepower. These Whirlpool’s and Kenmore’s have a VERY GENTLE wash 🧽 cycle 🔁. These old school 🏫 washing machines were BUILT TO LAST!! They last 🆙 to 30 years in the average household, and they were built to be serviced!! They were really HEAVY DUTY!! Any new washer and dryer set of today, you’re lucky 🍀 to see 5 years, or, “as long as federation.” Your friend, Jeff.

    Thank you so very much for this review. I was seriously considering this product, but I had some reservations about it. I bought a used Whirlpool washing machine in 2009 from a local appliance store that’s no longer in business. I bought this Whirlpool for $250. That included tax and delivery and set up. I’ve never had a single problem with it until a couple of days ago. I definitely got my $250 worth, so I wanted to look at Whirlpool first as a replacement. I like this concept of the best of both worlds, but you raised legitimate issues that I would not have even thought about. I appreciate you so very much. The one thing you didn’t mention was the noise level. Between reviews on several box store websites and including some of the comments here, apparently this is a really noisy machine. My previous Whirlpool was also noisy, but if I’m going to buy a new one I would like to have a quieter machine. So a comment on the noise level good or bad would have been appreciated. But other than that, this review has helped me so very much make a decision, and I’ve decided to look at LG. Thank you again!

    My Maytag commercial residential washer is not working properly during the spin cycle. A service repairman locked the level legs in place,as the legs were not locked in place when installed; which may have caused damage to parts of the washer. I have had three service calls for the washer in a short time,which is not normal. A relative talked about Whirlpool washing machines being good. I appreciate your helpful video about what features and brands are best with the repairs. I did not know Maytag sold their company to Whirlpool in 2006. I now know to avoid Maytag for other brands Whirlpool or Amana.

    I have had my Whirlpool removeable agitator washer for 3 months and it is the best, most versatile and quietest washer I have ever owned in 50 years. The water level never comes even close to the top of the agitator. It has the most effective spin cycle I have ever seen, to the point where some light fabrics actually come out almost dry. This saves a ton of time and money on dryer use. It has a manual faucet that allows you to pause a cycle to pre hand - wash items in the washer, or add extra water (cold only) to a cycle. I washed a full size wown comforter in this machine with excellent results, and even the quick wash will clean most normal laundry loads adequately.

    I've been watching your videos all day and learning a lot! Would you consider this model or the WTW5105HW to be a better buy for top load? I'm coming from an LG front load -only 6 years old that has had major mold issues despite constant cleaning and drying. I'm leaning toward the top load for this reason but I'm also tempted by the microban feature on the GE model GFW650. Any thoughts? Trying not to make another mistake and so much conflicting info out there. Thanks for your videos!

    The only way you can make a front loader to last longer is by not using the fastest speed. By avoiding the fastest speed you can almost double its life span. The other thing is don't do bathroom rugs in them. Better to go to a laundromat. On a GE front loader this is a must. Anyway it is a free advice.

    I sell these units. This is good information for me to give to customers! We watched a video at work that showed the unit being hoised by hooking to the agitator (no movie tricks). That was impressive. It gets a good lock when the agitator is engaged. My coworker and I had the same reservations about gunk getting caught in the spring mechanism. I wonder if a pipe cleaner inserted into the holes would clean it....

    Not so impressive.. I replaced a GE impeller top load recently due to a leaking tub seal that could not be repaired because the tub liner could simply not be removed from the hub due to steel and aluminum corroding together.. I had that stupid thing hung up off the ground from the floor joists and was torching it and beating with a sledgehammer and all I succeeded in doing was wrecking the shaft.. Who the hell uses steel and aluminum together in a wet environment and doesn't expect them to corrode together permanently?

    I appreciate the information provided. My wife and I purchased the 4.6 Whirlpool equivalent yesterday. We are replacing an eight year old Maytag that has the glass door but a plastic bottom. I will likley take your advice as there is an optional five year extended warranty. She would like the glass door but won't use the agitator. To get the glass door we have to purchase the 2 in 1 at approx $100.00 more. My concern are the holes in the wash plate when the agitator is removed. We are seniors and the two of us use it. I appreciate your guidance looks like we will go with the plainer unit with traditional metal door.

Do you know if there is a compatible 1) agitator that is more effective than this removable one and perhaps allows for fabric softener/vinegar to be dispensed, and 2) wash cap to protect the wash plate when the agitator is removed? I know neither of these come included, but I'm interested in retrofitting to make this washer more effective, if there are options out there that are safe and compatible.

    I had an extended warranty at Lowes on my Whirlpool refrigerator. Even though they say "repair or replace". They will NOT replace the unit. If it is too expensive to repair, they will refund your purchase price minus the cost of the warranty. This happened to me a little over a year ago and the replacement unit I bought ended up costing me $300 more than the old unit and I had to buy the ice maker separate where it was free with the old one. Don't trust any of these warranties to actually replace the unit

    Most third party warranties are fulfilled by independent contractors. They are highly constrained by the warranty companies to do repairs within various guidelines. It is obvious when someone has abused a machine, and this information will be transmitted to the warranty company. When it comes to replacement of a machine, you are right, it is a monetary payoff and not a machine for machine swap. It is all spelled out in the contract, which very few people read before buying the coverage. This same sort of issue also applies to almost any extended warranty on small items that you buy from Amazon or Best Buy. They aren't going to even try to fix your dash cam, they will just send you some money and close the case.

    I bought the washer and dryer combo shown here at 10:53 (5.2cu ft)when they first came out. It’s more or less the same experience. Doesn’t seem like it’s doing much when you stand there staring into it, but it sure does a damn good job at washing. I regularly fill it full of nasty, dirty, stinky work clothes and rags and so far no issues and no complaints other than the cost. The removable agitator seemed like it might be a gimmick but it sure is nice to wash your whole bed spread in one load and your work week laundry in the next. If you’re on the fence about getting a removable agitator washer, just go get it. It’s great.

    The shortness of the agitator makes sense when you consider the size of the HE drum. Because the drum is wider, the correct amount of clothing will not be as high, and therefore does not need the same height agitator as a non HE washer. One drawback I see is that the agitator rotates clockwise and then counter-clockwise. An old school agitator always rotates one direction so the side blades are always driving the close in one direction..."down". As for the amount of clothes recommended, I don't agree with judging by weight. I tell my customers, no more than half full loosely placed inside when washing heavy items, and you can get away with a bit more when washing children's clothes, hand towels, lingerie, etc. I've never seen a problem with a plastic bottom. I just worked on one that was 12 years old last week. I have that washer. I've noticed that this style of agitator doesn't pull clothes down. Thus the top of the clothes kinda just moves around, but doesn't seem to wash as well as it should. The dryer sucks though. The moisture cycles don't do anything. Any cycle less than 90 minutes results in damp clothes.

    @@bensappliancesandjunk what is the best top loader? Do you have a video?

  • @tomhoots
    @tomhoots Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your videos. I just replaced an 18-year-old impeller machine with an agitator machine -- in my price range, impellers were very rare, while "everything had agitators." Whatever, so I bought one with an agitator. Now that I understand the difference, "consider a large item," like a smallish comforter, which won't truly fill the bottom of the basket. With an agitator in the middle, there's truly no way to balance that load. "Live and learn," and I"m doing so. But with my old impeller machine, that kind of load would wind up with the comforter "covering the whole basket," above the impeller. So, it sure seems to me that an impeller machine probably must have an easier job of balancing loads. The other thing that REALLY concerns THE WHOLLY CRAP out of me is the "automatic water sensing" concept -- and watching that, it was very clear that the water only came up to perhaps half the height of the clothes in the basket, and thus THE AGITATOR WAS WORKING VERY HARD TO PULL FULLY DRY CLOTHES DOWN INTO THE WATER. After I watched that on one load, I was screaming, "OH, HECK NO!!" Now, my machine DOES have a manual water level control, and I will use that MANUALLY, so long as I can own a machine with a manual water level control. I'm sorry, but I want to see clothes "swishing around in the water," not "getting yanked down forcibly into a very small bit of water." So, "my next machine" will likely be an impeller machine -- I'm not very enthused about agitators anymore. But then again, I'd bet actual money right now that you may not be able to find a machine with both an impeller AND a manual water level control. Your thoughts about these issues would be very welcome in your future videos.

  • @dregenius

    @@justinfowler2857 As she should be, Speed Queens give *mediocre* at best, wash performance, and they'll cost you thousands of dollars in electricity over the machine's life because of their 1930's spin speed of 600 rpm only gets about half the water out that a proper modern front loader would. Oh. And the front loader will clean better. This is not up for debate. Ask any hotel, resort, hospital or institutional laundry room how a top loader would work. If you're against front loaders, take a moment and ask yourself why. Is it because they're hard to load? Think about reaching down into a top loader, lifting clothes out, bending down to throw them in th dryer (which they'll spend twice as long in cause they're still soaking wet), then standing back up to reach back down into a top loader.... Is it concerns about mold? Leave the door cracked. I don't even wipe the gasket, just leave it at that "half closed" latch position, and no mold at all and inside the machine is totally dry when I go to use it. If you're willing to spend five times what a speed queen costs in electricity over the next 10 or 15 years, maybe we need legislation in this country banning top load washers. 😂

    What would solve the problem with the impeller or wash plate is making them more aggressive to pull down clothes from the top to turn them over. The agitator in a agitator washer was next best with turning the clothes over. The front loading drum does this the best. It seems like the impeller either doesn’t have enough water in the normal cycle and too much water in the sheets/bulk cycle.

    It doesn't. I am gonna do some tests later this year on wash quality between the 3. My theory is that there's probably different baselines of acceptable cleaning quality, but it varies by water usage between these 3 types, where certain agitation types are better with X water usages, and its not the same between the 3 types. Thinking of using all 3 types in 3 different modes (eco wash, normal, deep fill) and see the wash quality between each 3 types on a small 5lb identical load for them all.

    One thing you should note is that this auger doesn't ratchet like older augers. If you look at the physics of this, it could drive items down when turning one direction, then pull them up in the other direction. Older machines like the direct drive or belt drive have agitators that are integral to rotating items. Without fins, a wash plate is half as effective, and the only reason that they use them is that a full agitator wouldn't work with such low water. I think that wash plate machines, under any brand, with or without an auger, are not as effective as older machines, and must be packed with electronics to achieve the wash action necessary for washing.

  • @dregenius

    @dregenius

    It always boggles my mind how many problems we've identified with washers - needs a lot of water for agitator to work, using that much water dilutes detergent and hurts cleaning performance, wash plate doesn't turn clothes, can't redistribute clothes for the spin cycle without re-filling with another 70 gallons of water so spin speed is half of what it could be and billions of kWh are wasted yearly by americans having to dry much wetter clothes.... when *ALL* of those things are completely solved by turning the damn thing on its side. Why do Americans resist demonstably better designs with such vigor? I swear if we put that effort into desgning new appliances, we wouldn't be stuck with that flimsy 1962-designed lint-top dryer from Whirlpuke. lololol

    @@dregenius The WP top lint screen dryer is one of the best on the market. It has just the right mix of durability, performance, repairability, and sound level. I don't think that Americans resist front load washers at all. But these come with some downsides, such as price tag, mildew issues, and vibration on less than optimum surfaces. All high efficiency washers are filled to the brim with electronics in order to manage the wash action and all the exotic components that are needed to pull off low water washing, and that is a real drain on durability. One of the best front load washers was the original Maytag Neptune, although it did have some mildew issues. I still marvel at how Maytag was able to get people to pay $1k for a washer, something unheard of at the time.

    Per the manual, put the softener in a Downey ball and drop it in when you start the wash.

    I find Downy Balls so unreliable to use. I've been trying to add vinegar during the final rinse cycle, but it always seems like it drains whenever I pause and add it. Does anyone know how to do this correctly?

    @@cyxu Press the cycle button (it is like a right arrow button) to pause the cycle. It will unlock the lid. You can add the vinegar or fabric softener to the clothes. Press the faucet button to get a little rinse water. Then stop the faucet, close the lid. Press the cycle button again to start the machine back up. That should work without it draining the water until the cycle is done. I tried to answer your other question but YT is not letting it through. I would ener your washer model number into a search engine and the form should come up.

    My Maytag bravos XL 'commercial grade' and if it's given a decent amount of laundry it doesn't turn over much...hate it vs the old school ones. The direct drive older ones where the best, my new whirlpool Maytag with it's inverter motor just plain sucks

    I have the same washing machine but mine just don’t have the removable agitator. Everything else is exactly the same. I’ve had it 3 weeks and I hate it. It goes to sense cycle then soak cycle. When the soak cycle is done it starts flashing the sense, lid lock and done button. It never goes to wash. I’ve just be draining and spinning out the load then start over so they can be rinsed. I don’t know what to do. I just want to scream!!!!!

    My Whirlpool washer is my nightmare. I have a washer plate. First, I can't put more than 6 T-shirts in it with out getting unbalanced. I can't leave the washer. Good thing my washer is off my kitchen. But I would like to put my clothes in a washer and leave it to other places in my house. I feel as though I'm chained to my washing machine. I have tried everything as far as arranging my clothes in different ways I put into my washer. The only success is to barely put any clothes in it. Or basically, I have to wait until it starts to spin and open it and make sure it is arranged perfectly. Well, sometimes you can go through the process several times. The washer spins twice from wash to rinse and rinse to done. It's very frustrating. I was wondering if there is a KIT to convert my washing plate to a agitator. Second, it hardly has any water come out. I guess it's conserving water but I end up using more water because I can barely put anything in there. I can't go through this for 20 more years because my husband won't buy another one until it breaks. That is why I have come up with the Conversion Kit to fix this nightmare of a washer. Can you help?
