As soon as I heard "rocking in the evening with my friend called Steve Ning," I knew it was true. I've been in those sorts of bands before, and the shame is real. Oh god, the shame...

@@this_is_a_tiny_town I fear they've been purged from my memory in an attempt to allow me to at least function as a semi-productive member of society. Suffice to say, there was one band where the lead singer wrote all his songs about how unironically amazing it was to live in a bedsit and be permanently stoned, and what amazing times he had, even though it all just sounded a bit tragic. Imagine Cypress Hill but 18 yr old white middle class edgelords, without any of the political undertones, humour, and violent tragedy of poverty and drug culture. The first (and thankfully ONLY) gig we played, I had to get drunk before-hand, and I STILL nearly died of embarrassment. 🤣

Wonderful this. I'm exhausted from watching it even though had to pause the clip several times. How could they think it was a lie? Then it would have no vulnerability, no embarrassment.

  • @SandScorp

The embarrassment would come from the fact that they would obviously ask her to sing and she will have to make it sound bad, weather she could actually sing or not. True or false, embarrassment guaranteed. But yeah I agree it didn't come across as a lie at all.

As Karsten said, it was 100% a mercy lie. I think it's fairly obvious they all knew it was true but had the social intelligence of giving her a small win in exchange for putting herself in a vulnerable position for entertainment. Think about it, either A: It's true (i.e. you really do suck at singing) + no point for her team, or B: It's a lie (i.e. you're a good actress/comedian) + turns out she's actually bad at singing but she "earns" one point for her team. Option B is kinder :)

I figured that, if she were pretending to have a bad voice, she'd've made it worse than she did. So I figured true. Spoiler alert about a different one that seemed vulnerable and embarrassed and was lying... When Lily Allen claimed to have until recently believed that reindeer weren't real, she seemed so embarrassed. Certainly she fooled me! They pretty much give her a mercy Lie though. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mXyJ082piLHXlM4.html

You act like you are embarrassed to fool someone, also I don't think that they said "lie" to be merciful, I thinkl they have to take into consideration that she might be acting and lying, you can't take people's emotions into account because we can all act a certain way to fool people.

Whoever that singing coach is, they should be banned from teaching. You don’t start with belting as a singer, and she has a perfectly fine time with the syllables she sings at the end. I think the song she chose was a) too high for comfort and b) not representative of her chest voice. She’d be perfectly fine singing a bit lower and softer until she gets used to using her diaphragm.
