Warlord Char B1 Bis French Tank [28mm]

The French Char B1 Bis 28mm scale plastic tank is a newer release from Warlord. The plastic is made by Italeri and it's really good.
Very enjoyable and easy to build. Would recommend!

I suggest you paint it in French colours, so you can experiment with French camo patterns...it makes for a nice change from Grey, Green and German Late-war camo.

Great video ! The copula did rotate and it had a spotting scope behind the little armour plate on the front. On the rear was an episcope like the other vision ports. Finally on the left side behind the visor was an open vision port. If anyone wants to have a commander sitting on the turret hatch door you need to remember that it's hinged in the middle and folds out and down. That puts it with the narrow (top) end next to the opening. The seat was the outside of the door. The short piece of railing was an armored channel for the antenna wire. However, few French tanks had radios. In fact France lost a commanding general and his staff when they drove to the front to find out what was going on. They drove right into the German army. So although you see antennas they aren't connected to anything. Only an 88mm AA gun could hole a B1 from most angles. A Panzer IV or Stug could hole one but only from certain angles. The turret 47mm was the equal to or better than most tanks at the time and could hole most. The short 75mm gun could kill any German tank, assuming it got a chance. It could also fire HE as well as AP rounds. BUT it was slow! It couldn't go much beyond the walking speed of a man.

You've always got such interesting comments. I had no idea they were so short on radios. That's kind of surprising. Though I guess the soviets had the same problem. I did know that hte biggest failing of the Char B1 Bis was it's slow speed. It wasn't suitable to a mobile war, no matter how good the gun and armour were.

According to my handy dandy copy of Panzer IV vs Char B1 bis France 1940 by osprey the B1's speed was 28 kph vs Pz IV 42 kph. So, yes, the Char B1 was slow but it was faster than a man's walking speed. The Germans were able to knockout B1s with 105mm field guns as well as 88mm. As for the radios I don't think they were "short" so much as didn't see the need for them. The French had a doctrine built around methodical battle so having only radios for the platoon commanders was seen as good enough. A lot of the French army had to be built on the principle of "good enough" due to a shortage of personnel and money

To clarify, the char B1 is a heavy tank, one of the better tanks at the time too, all things considered. A fantastic review, I cant wait to pick this one up myself

Indeed. Though the box says it's a medium. Maybe they're just going by its weight. It was only 28 or 29 tons.

Thats possible, though there were not many tanks that weighed much in the arsenals of the french army, its mostly just extremes of ' fairly light tanks' to ' Im a CHAR 2C Superheavy tank', Might have something to do with french tank doctrine that I am also missing, worth looking up without a doubt!

to my knowledge the reason you (typically) don't see shovels and pick, etc. is the French doctrine for armour being HEAVILY focused on infantry support rather than independent mobility. So why carry additional weight when the infantry and engineers can do it for you. As for the turret the reason for it being so small is because of French doctrine once again, following the Great War France had a large issue with manpower and had a large surplus of light guns. so they made many tanks 1 man turrets which put the Commander is charge of the following on many tanks: Commanding, Loading, Gunnery, Radio Operation, and Spotting.

In here late. But I don't think 1/56th will work for guard. They are more suited for 1/48th and unfortunately I don't think anyone makes one. You can get 1/35th though from our lords and saviours Tamiya. Might be good as a Malcador conversion.

When doing a Minecraft video on Twitch, I always have to mute the game audio. It's because of you that I purchased/assembled the Hobby Boss T34/85 medium tank.
