The film's script is based on A.P. Chekhov's story "Ward No. 6", but the film's action has been moved to the present time. Another innovation of the creators of the film is that the narration is conducted in the form of interviews with people, in a documentary manner.
Evgeny Khobotov is the new head physician of a psychiatric hospital. He introduces us to Ivan Gromov, who has a persecution mania. It turns out that the previous chief physician, Dr. Ragin, considered him... a prophet. Now Ragin is in this hospital as a patient. But how did it happen that a healthy person, after communicating with a mentally ill person, loses his mind? How did he cross this line? And in general, isn’t the line between mentally ill people and normal people illusory? Perhaps it would be true to say that you and I all suffer from different forms of mental illness? One way or another, Dr. Ragin’s colleagues and relatives are trying to understand why the visit to ward No. 6 was fatal for the physician.

Great adaptation of the Chekhov story. The realism of it makes it really chilling. It opens up many questions of how we should deal with our own suffering and that of people around us.
Chekhov is the best writer of short stories ever!
3 minutes in and I couldn’t watch more. I feel people’s pain. Anything can traumatize me. Thank goodness I know how to pray.. prayer is all I got in my pockets for the unfortunate. That look in the young man’s eye precisely @ 3:26.. I paused it right there and my heart wept for him. Anyone can see the little boy in him. Only Lord knows of the size and measure of their pain. May they find peace within.. for what it’s worth.. this life is short.. so we’re all passerbys. Never allow it to consume you.. you consume it by trying to live it positively. I have my share of great misfortunes just like the majority of us but got faith in my being.. and so it picks me up every time besides wisdom and common sense. I stop at that.. I don’t have the heart to watch more. Wish you all better lives than the ones you’re running. 💐
This is one of the best films I've seen on this channel. It will take me a couple days to process this one in my mind.
I read the book twenty years ago.. Never realized it had so much impact on me. Incredible film..

That's pretty deep. One can interpret it in so many ways. I wish I knew the writer, director's viewpoint. Was it filmed in a real asylum or the cast was so realistic?

Filmed in mental hospital. The main roles are actors, but the extras are real patients
