We could do with an in-game tutorial on operating radar. We've got basic tutorials for driving vehicles and aiming weapons and such, but radar is such an important part of high tier combat that it deserves its own tutorial too.

A couple last things about radars that weren't mentioned in the video: - Active Radar Homing (ARH) Seekers: after the last update, Danger Zone, a new missile was introduced for the F-14, the AIM-54A 'Phoenix'. Similarly to Semi-Active Radar Homing (SARH), this type of missile guides trough a radar beam with the difference that, if certain conditions are met (mostly closure), the missile will lock on the target using the radar contained in its nose (this type of radar is kind of like the ACM mode on a normal airborne radar, wich means that if a target gets in the way, it is likely that the missile will lock said target, even if your radar is still locking the right one). This missiles of course allow for better guidance. In real life they can also be launched "blind", or without a lock, trusting the lock to their radar (useful if for example a target is too far to lock / you're having trouble locking, so you just fire a missile, wich will likely get in range for a good lock). - TWS: This is a technology implemented on radars after the late 70s, and, as of now, only the F-14 'Tomcat' and the JA37C 'Viggen' have such advanced capabilities on their radar. TWS stands for Track While Scan, wich means that the radar can search for targets even while locking one (NOTE: this is different from having 2 different radars for tracking and searching). A TWS lock will also not send a lock RWR signal to the receiving aircraft, wich will still believe that a radar beam is bouncing on it, but without it looking like a lock. But, it has a flaw: as the TWS is a way less strong lock compared to a normal lock, Semi-Active Radar Homing (SARH) missiles will be unable or almost unable to guide on targets. On the other hand Active Radar Homing (ARH) missiles, wich I just talked about, can guide trough a TWS lock wich is why one of the most used ways of shooting the AIM-54s is to lock every enemy you can with TWS and just send a missile or two to each target, while they have no idea of what's happening.

Maybe add, that it's the button between "T" and "U". On my keyboard, Y and Z are switched. It's a German one, so at least people from Germany might get confused, though this switch-up may also exist in other languages ^^

@@bobbert5421 because the SIDAM does not have a radar, it has IRST. This gives aircraft with RWR 0 warning.

The SIDAM 25 radar is a bit weird. It has only an IRST tracker, and the way you use it is go into gunner view (shift by default), point at the aircraft, and then hit "lock radar/IRST" which should, if the target is close enough and you're pointing at them, allow you to lock on and track

Allow manual control over Azimuth and Elevation!!!! Advanced radars such as the AWG-9 are next to useless in BVR when your scan line is stuck with the attitude of the plane!

​@@kajmak64bit76 It's a bit limited in game, there are only like 3 radar scope presets to choose from and they are just very generic, as it will always basically revolve around the center (so in the end ACM is just better most of the time). With manual control, for instance you would be able to choose scopes that maybe only include the left of your radar gimbal limits (if for some reason that might be useful), or a more practical one: make the radar scan only above your plane, so that it won't pick up ground clutter when you are hugging the ground (and waste time scanning it).

That would be very good, especially for radars like the one on the F-104S/ASA, wich only scans about 4° vertically. Technically once it had this capability, at the start of wind of change, where basically the vertical angle of a lock would keep the radar at that angle even after the lock was lost, both visually and effectively, wich makes me think they had an idea about it but something stopped them.

I would like a few tips on rockets (pre-ccip) on how to range it correctly depending on the type of the rocket

WAR THUNDER great video with some decent explanations I truly hope you can do a lot more videos like this in the future. I'm sure it will help a lot of new players out and some older ones. Would be wonderful if maybe it went in a little more depth on how these radars work or show a tiny bit better of an explanation showing them in action giving each type of radar a bit more time showing how they work. But honestly good job on this video 👍

If your aircraft is equipped with iff and if your friendlies is on your radar the target will show with 2 dashes if enemy or no iff it will show 1 dash

@@justyourdad4469 That ^^. Although some radars only have IFF on certain modes. For example the F-104S/ASA only has it in normal SRC mode, not in MTI mode. So you might wanna cycle a moment trough your radar modes to check if they all agree that your contatct is not friendly. If you don't have IFF and have a doubt about your lock, you can try asking in team chat. I know it's not reliable and makes you loose time, but it's definetely better then getitng a team kill and paying such an high price.

radar lock is also harder to shake off, as it can retain the lock through light foiliage, grass, and clouds. same cannot be said about IRST.

I'm not gonna get too deep into how SARH missiles work, because it's a very complex argument, but just know that they kinda have to get their lock too (wich is why sometimes a SARH missile will track despite the loss of lock from the launcher if it's in the final stage of guidance), and the radar waves reflected by an aircraft going away from you and the missile aren't strong and precise.

@@thatoneraotguy2590 I know how it works, problem is its insanely inconstant for no apparent reason. You could repeat the scenario 6 times and get a different result each time. Ive nearly spaded the F1C at this point and that missile is so wonky compared to others using the same system. Other times when it seems it should lose track it tracks like a dream. It makes zero sense, specially since a 530F fired within 9km should be considered a no escape zone specially on a solid tone lock

@@Merajito20k This is the kind of stuff that can change so quickly environement, temperature, windspeeds, movement, distance, stuff getting in the way are all factors that can change radically how stuff goes

This is nice and all, but in my game I don't have any of these radars, I only have big green square shaped radar screens, which is annoying because it blocks view, and also useless. So I stopped using radars completely. Also I don't understand radar lock or tracking.

Well chronologically yes, kinda, because the first radars were ground based and stationary. But in game ships equipped with radars came pretty late compared to aircrafts and anti aircraft vehicles
