Walmart Boot Review - Walmart is not known for their high quality footwear but how bad is it really? I bought their cheapest rain boots (duck boots) to cut in half to start off the Duck Boot Mini Series. I like to cut apart really cheap products to show why its important to buy things that decent quality to help you save your money and to hopefully prevent more fast fashion garbage ending up in landfills. Yes I see the irony of wasting a product by cutting it in half but hopefully this style of video will help prevent more waste by informing consumers and be overall net positive!

Yeah, thrift store stuff generally needs some work done though, but they definitely work. There's sort of a gross factor there for some people that they don't get with this kind of thing, but I feel like it's more of a scam for the uneducated masses though. Like, who takes the time to learn about shoes? Not many people unfortunately.

@@arit8009 For women, thrift stores are great places to find shoes. Because a lot of women buy a ton of shoes, then rarely wear them. Then they donate them when they run out of space. I got a small collection of nice, dressy shoes I got at thrift stores. Brand name department store shoes that look like new. No gross sweat marks on the inside, and the soles show no wear at all. I paid under $5 per pair. I know for dudes it's different. Dudes don't go shoe shopping for fun, and they wear their clothes and shoes till they wear out.

I remember being so poor I couldn't afford good work boots. Now I have an office job and I don't need good work boots because I sit in front of a computer all day. If you told me back then that a good boot would cost "only 80 dollars more" I would have looked at you like you had two heads. 80 dollars more would have been like double the money I didn't have. Anyway, you're not wrong, and I should have tried to save up more for better stuff that didn't wear out so fast, because I'm sure I spent that $80 two or three times over replacing crappy boots, but it's amazing how the perspective is different when you have a little more breathing room in the budget.

I think the more salient point is that they've basically added some faux-leather to make a worse, more complex wellington boot that still looks terrible. For a third of the price you could have something with comparable comfort that actually holds out the water. For the same price, you could get a competent sole.

I love this quote from the Discworld books which is exactly what you're talking about. At one point in the story, the Captain ruminates: The reason that the rich were so rich...was because they managed to spend less money. "Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet."

I bought merrell hiker shoes used in almost brand new condition. 6 years later I finally had to buy new ones, i was so impressed I went to a sport shoe store and bought new. They are no where near the quality I had. The exact same shoe too. Obviously profit margin is widening and the quality is being dropped. In my youth this "quality" would have been a $5.00 shoe. In fact I buy tons of footwear in almost store bought condition at thrift stores. But now, quality is being compromised far too much, we are being ripped off and the environment is paying the largest price. My winter boots are prime example, the formerly wool sock liner is now recycled plastic threads, how is a water bottle insulating? Research and inspecting is far too necessary now.

@@powwow1194 I don't think that's necessarily true, I think that most people assume clothes and shoes just, don't last longer than a year or two, and don't know there's anything better than that, because they go to stores and that's all that's available in any of their pricepoints, which usually aren't that high. Even more expensive stores for the average consumer, like say, sport shoes like nike and expensive fashion like... crap it's been too long since I've been in a mall and I can't even recall an expensive mall brand anymore, don't last that long. Most people think cobblers are historical if they've even heard of them, that a reasonable price for shoes is $50 or less, and that clothing is supposed to need replaced once every 2ish years, when it's a symptom of poor manufacturing and fast fashion. Most people don't even know how to repair clothing when the poorly constructed slave labor crap we all buy breaks, so they just buy new stuff because what are they gonna do? For a person who's not interested, where are they gonna learn this stuff? I'm a bit of a fashion nerd, and durability doesn't really make any sort of appearance until you get into historical or sustainable fashion circles, or like, minimalism.... sometimes. Maybe it's different for men's fashion, though?

This is good thinking. The industry definitely has always taken advantage of people by selling incredibly cheap and poorly made clothing and other products that need to be replaced within a short time. Every time I see places like Wish I get angry because it's such a blatant scam, but at the same time fast fashion brands that can be found in malls aren't that different from Wish. They just have the appearance of being more reputable and spend a tiny bit more for the production, advertising, and brick and mortar. Not every consumer has the same knowledge or budget so the industry definitely preys on them. And then there's also how they rely on people wanting the latest trends to be easily accessible and available ASAP.

Loved the video. I, and I'm certain others, would absolutely enjoy seeing other off-the-shelf footwear from Walmart reviewed. I know they have a brand called "Interceptors" which markets a boot as being 670-1 compliant, meaning it's permitted to be worn by personnel in the U.S. Army. I wonder how well it actually holds up.

This is really cool. I live in FL and never had much need for boots (it rains a lot in FL, but never for long, so you don't expect to be wearing wet shoes all day), and when I planned to visit a friend in a colder climate the idea of buying boots like these completely bewildered me. I'd be easy bait for cheap shoes like these and I would have wasted my money. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

As you said, not all Walmart boots are bad. I worked security full-time at a construction site and in a factory, I picked up some Brahma Interceptor tactical boots from Walmart for like $35, I didn't want to spend $140 on premium boots just for them to get dusty/muddy. I've had them for a couple years and I still wear them every week and for shoveling snow in the winter. They've held up fine. I have no complaints other than they are clunky and made a lot of noise walking through quite buildings.

I had a pair of steel toe Brahma's too that held up well for a couple years of work at a factory and for general work. Really not bad for the $27 pair of boots with vegan leather. My only gripe is that I once had a nail go through the bottom of the boot, luckily it wasn't serious.

As for boots being thrown away, this morning I threw away a pair of Vasque hikers. Did not wear them much in the last few years as they were nearly completely worn out. Went to brush them off before giving them a coat of grease I noticed that some of the leather was cut through into the lining. Into the trash they went. Only took about 15+ years of some hard, some easy and some years of hardly any use before they finally just were not worth keeping anymore. They were good, comfortable and long lasting light duty hikers. In a few more years, my Danner Mountain Light II's will also end up in the trash. Those Danners have been rebuilt twice by Danner and there is not enough leather left to do a proper resole again. And those boots were used hard on rough rocky trails. Like most things, you get what you pay for. (most of the time)

As someone who had to buy a lot of cheap shoes when I first became an adult (cos if you don't have $$ to buy shoes you just don't have the money and are at the mercy of local thrift shops, which mine literally never have good work shoes in my size; there's no 'just save up' when your society and the weather require you to keep your feet covered when in most public spaces), I was not surprised by how the insides just flopped out like that. Pretty much all cheap shoes I've owned do that. I would often combat the problem by wearing super cheap sandals in all but the worst weather so that I could save my 'good' (aka closed toe) shoes as much as possible to make them last, which that (plus lbr working from home for a whole year and not needing to put any shoes on at all most days) has eventually allowed me to save up for...well, I don't have good shoes yet, but I do finally have the money to buy a good pair of boots, which is how I ended up finding these videos. I'm ready to join the buy it for life crew!

The other thing about these cheap boots made to look like LL Bean is that they tend to freeze in extremely cold temperatures, and then crack when they thaw out.
