WALKS IN DORSET. CORFE CASTLE TO SWANAGE & RETURN BY THE SWANAGE STEAM RAILWAY. (4K)
In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset” I take a linear walk from Corfe Castle to Swanage and take the return journey on the Swanage Heritage Steam railway. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at the (free) Challow Hill “Walkers” car park which is located just to the East of Corfe Castle. My 5 mile walk commences with a climb up on to a ridge - along the Purbeck Way - to Rollington Hill.
My journey takes me along Brenscombe Hill, Ailwood Down and Kingswood Down where I get some stunning views across to Poole Harbour.
At Godlingston Hill, I make my way down towards Swanage, past Godlingston Manor & the location of old Swanage Gas Works.
I then get on a steam train (!) at Swanage for my return journey along the heritage railway back to Corfe Castle.

Thank you Gareth. We had some fun making that video!
I live in North Yorkshire which is beautiful but these videos of Dorset are stunning. Relaxed delivery with man's best friend for company. Great watch on a miserable grey November's day. What a diverse incredible country we live in.
I would like a shilling for every time I've been on that train. In my day you could go from Poole to Swanage return, and with a bike for 2s 6d. The memories are flooding back.

Thank you Jessie. So glad that you had a great walk there. Thanks for watching.
What a beautiful walk with the added bonus of a steam train! Logan was very brave going on the train. I've seen some dogs shake with fear boarding trains and even bark at the train as it pulls into the platform!

Thanks Angela. Yes, I was surprised how calmly Logan took to being on the train. I think he thought it was just a big car!
What a wonderful video, thanks for sharing it! Your dog remembers me of ly own dog, he died a few decades ago, but I still adore whippets.

Thanks Al. Logan is a delight to take anywhere as he has such a laid back personality which certainly makes life easier when filming!
Thank you Dave, that was very nostalgic for me and brought back many happy memories. I first did that walk as a young girl guide, many , many years ago. The weather wasn't as good as you had though, in fact I remember it blowing quite a gale up on those hills!

Cheers. The steam train journey was a little different!
Beautiful area and stunning views. Sad to see the trig tumbled over. Was it near it's original location do you think? Logan is so well trained waiting for you to open gates for him and dealing so well with his first train journey! An area I have visited a far bit in the past and lovely to see a video of it to reacquaint myself! Thank you.

Thanks Jean. Not sure about the exact situation with the trig point - it looks like it has been moved from it's original position on the summit of Nine Barrow Down a few hundred yards away. I read that it may have been moved about 20 years ago - the original position may have been on private land? If so., maybe the owner was fed up with trespassers? I am not sure of the full facts though. I might be wrong, but I am not sure that they are officially used any more. If that is the case then I guess it will remain in that "toppled over" position!
Amazing place, feel very lucky to live 30mins away. Great video as always. How were you planning, normally it's static

Thanks Lee. I did have an assistant "camera operator" on that one - I thought it would be easier especially with the train scenes!
Look at how the chemtrails change a beautiful blue sky into a horrible high level opaque one

Beautiful area Dave and as usual a cracking information video. Can you advise approximate times? I know your real times will be that much longer due to all the video shots

Thank you Barry. I always mention the approximate distance of the walk at the start of the video but often I am asked the question "how long did it take for you to complete the walk?" It is always a difficult question to answer because during the course of filming, I have many, many stops for things like setting up / taking down the tripod, setting up & taking still shots with my Canon camera. In addition, it is often the case that I am sitting down waiting for either the sun to come out from behind a cloud (!) or for traffic / folk to move on. I also spend time re-filming scenes (ie I might film a scene early in the morning in a village but the light might not be that good .... so I would re-film the scene at the end of the day (when the sun had come around). Last week, I filmed a 5.5 mile walk but it took nearly 6 hours (from leaving the car & returning). Much also depends on how quickly folk actually walk and indeed how many "stops to admire the view" are taken. What I can do though, going forward, is mention a "difficulty rating" for the walk (stating if it is predominantly flat or undulating). I hope that helps? Thanks for the feedback & indeed thank you for watching.

I thought it might have been how long is a piece of string question and our walks are more like a bimble and as you say it really depends on one’s walking speed. As I’m a landscape photographer a walk can take some time. Thanks for the feedback and if your Chideock way, let’s us know. 👍🍺
Hi Dave. That looked like a very nice walk over the hills to Swanage. How much did it cost you to take the train back to Corfe? Some heritage railways won’t sell tickets for short journeys. They only sell all day tickets. The Mid Hants railway does that. I haven’t been down to Swanage for years. One of my favourite trips is to use the open top Purbeck Breezer, which travels via the Sandbanks ferry. I wonder how that trig stone got knocked over. Very odd. Great video. Thanks.

The single ticket Swanage to Corfe cost £12. Logan had to pay £2 for his "dog" single ticket!
