I will be staying at Martin next week for a walking holiday for the second time this year! Cannot wait! I love it so much round here and have done this walk and others over Martin Down. I am so glad I found your KZread channel. Thankyou.

Thank you for the tour of Martin. My ancestor, Abraham Weekes, came from this village to the colonies (Virginia) in 1650. I would love to visit this lovely village one day.

My favourite place on earth. Both of my parents came from the village and my grandparents are in the churchyard. Unfortunately, not being a resident of London, I can't afford the £800,000 to buy an ordinary cottage. Some details- it is, as has been mentioned, the inspiration for Winterbourne Bishop in "A Shepherd's Life" and you missed the grave of James Lawes, in front of the North door. He was the model for Caleb Bawcombe, the shepherd in the title. Martin Down was very probably the site of the battle of Meretun in 871, where Aethelred was mortally wounded, leading to his brother Aelfred (the Great) becoming king. Couple of pronunciations- the locals called the lane Zillens and the dyke pronounced Bokkerley. Great video, though and you have a very well behaved dog.

Hi Dave. I don’t know why I’ve not watched this video before because the village and area around Martin is where a goodly chunk of my Shrimpton forebears lived going back at least to James Shrimpton my six times great-grandfather who was born there in 1689. Shrimptons probably lived there earlier than that but the parish records don’t go back farther. There’s a rather expensive house in the village called The Shrimptons, which was sited on a house and land once owned by James who was a farmer and butcher. I visited it about 30 years ago and the then owner very kindly showed me around. Unfortunately I couldn’t afford a garden shed there.

I believe that Martin is the same village as 'Winterbourne Bishop' in W.H. Hudson's 'A Shepherd's Life'. Lovely old church and surrounding countryside.

Another place i used to frequent on sunny Sunday afternoons back in the early seventies, seem to remember an old fireing range out there ?? by the way another great video thanks Dave.

Thank you John. Yes indeed - a 1961 map shows a rifle range on Martin Down.

Wow! What an incredible walk Dave & Logan!!! Martin was an absolutely idyllic & quisental English village. Just adored all of those thatched cottages!!!😍 Bokerly Ditch was very interesting & really appreciated how informative you were on its history. Definitely a place I probably would have never known about had you not just introduced me!!!😁👍

Thanks. I find some of these ancient earthworks fascinating - especially as often no one can be absolutely sure of their origins.

One of my favourite places. So good to revisit it on a dark wet January evening and remember being up there with the sound of the skylarks a couple of years ago. Thank you for posting.

Hi Dave, Just done this walk today - blue skies, sunshine, skylarks singing, red kites, a flock of bullfinches and wonderful views. Also found the marker on the church wall for services not to mention the archaeology. A great walk and only just down the road for us.

Another great walk, loved the interesting facts about the church, especially the service dials. Also, never knew those yellow flowers were cowslips, only ever knew of the more common white cowslips.

Thanks Ann. Yes, I had never come across those "dials" before & indeed it would have been easy to have missed them.

Tidpit Common Down is such a fascinating place in terms of humans dramatically interacting with nature over the eons.. The last few months I have spent HOURS exploring all the ditches and various, perhaps once defended areas (or maybe boundary-lines as you say.) Anyway, I Still haven't seen it all, but if you like stunning views and ancient topography, GO THERE ! Cheers Dave, Maybe see you up there one day ! I even photographed a hovering 'egg' thing floating in the sky above, last summer.

Hi Dave, loving these series of walks in Hampshire and Dorset, but what have you got against Wiltshire?🙂 Seriously, there are some cracking walks in The Cranborne Chase or how about down the Avon from Salisbury past Nelson's house, Trafalgar Park?Just crying out for the Dave and Logan treatment!

Yes - hoping to do some in Wiltshire next year. I have done the preparation for the first section of the Avon Valley Path (however that route does get a little "damp" at times!).

The pump reminds me of the one at Sherfield English school when I was a pupil there. We older boys were asked to go up to the top of playground and give the big wheel 100 turns. This would pump water into a holding tank in the head mistresses house next door. That modern cross has weathered a bit, but did you say it was brought there from another area? It’s always nice to see cowslips, but they seem to prefer particular areas

Yes, those cowslips seem to be prevalent in that area (loads on the Rockbourne walk as well) - I also recall seeing a lot on my walk at Cerne Abbas.

What a great video Dave. I really enjoyed that. I know the area well and walked there a few weeks ago as I live nearby. However you discussed quite a few things that I didn’t know, so apart from the amazing scenery I also learnt something!
