Walking the Curved Line to the PhD | Courtney Cain | TEDxLakeForestCollege
They say the quickest way from point A to point B is a straight line. However, the PhD is far from quick, and the journey from the Bachelors (point A) to the Doctorate (point B) was anything but a straight line. This talk follows her winding journey towards her PhD in history, including the academic and personal ups and downs that somehow propelled her towards the finish line. Courtney is a new assistant professor in African American Studies and History at Lake Forest College. She teaches courses on African American history, the history of hip hop, and black diaspora freedom struggles. She recently completed a PhD in History at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign which focused on the Haitian diaspora in Chicago, with a particular focus on the 20th century. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I loved hearing about the very real dilemma of having to change topics during a PhD. What it takes to accomplish a PhD is still a big mystery to mainstream society. I graduated from my PhD almost 8 years ago and the highs and lows Courtney described still seem so fresh in my mind.
It’s like KZread algorithm knows that I’ve applied for PhD

It does. Because I’ve applied over the wknd. And now I have all of these in my feed
Soooo inspiring! 😊💜 At sixty-two, I met with my doctoral supervisor for the very first time this morning!
Of all the Ph.D. journey videos that I have watched recently, this is probably the best: insightful, engaging, informative, humorous...just excellent from start to finish. Thank you for sharing your story, Courtney.
What an inspirational talk. I could not think of a better explanation of how the phd process feels like. It is a journey on curved line. Thank you!
as a 25 y/o Haitian in the PhD application process this really touched me. Thanks so much for your story!
This was fantastic 🙌🙌🙌 I loved every minute of it.

Found it so moving. Thank you ma'am. 🌻
of all the PhD vids I've watched recently, Courtney seems to understand it best.

Loved this! Great job, fellow Haitian.
Thanks ,so inspiring
I never doubted that you would achieve your goal. Congratulations! I look forward to read your dissertation. I remember mentioning the minimal proportion of DuSable's sculpture. Perhaps someday there will be a full body sculpture executed by a Haitian / American sculptor.
Awesome journey for Ph.D
Thank God i have my PharmD most school that I am applying to doesn't require me to take the GRE because of my professional degree I already obtained. Dodged a bullet

Very inspirational talk. Out of curiosity, is Haiti classified as Asian in America? The speaker and family picture look like someone from African descent.

@@tobehonest4833 The question was "is Haiti" as a country classified as Asian. Is not the same as "are Haitians". Get yourself a better job.

@@lovelyxtyxty8261 the speaker kept saying Haitian so I repeated it. Haitian. Haiti. No need to get hostile, cyber gangster. 😂
Some people drift into PhDs, hoping to find there occupation that nothing else can provide. Others, and I believe these to be a minority, are born with a need to know, understand, and explain to the world. Among them we have the leading few who have contributed eminently to the advancement of knowledge across the disciplines. The rest of PhDs are mom and dad's dearest kids, intelligent in their own right, but not born truth-seekers. Unless we all alchemists and believe in transforming base substances onto gold, please do not tell me that many PhDs make original contributions to knowledge. Somebody tell me, how are you a PhD when you have no philosophical doctrine to profess?
What benefits has to spend this much Money and Time to get so called PhD, when after You end it, the Salary of Yours won't get any higher? nor some Jobs even gonna tell You "We will not Hire You, because of Over Education". Then just go and start to wash plates in some kind of supermarket, or so, in the Times of Flying Hyper Sonic Rockets around the East of Europe.
