Walking East Boston : Jeffries Point, Piers Park, Boston Harbor & Skyline Views (April 2023)

Ойын-сауық

East Boston is a neighborhood located in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. It is located on a peninsula that is surrounded by the Boston Harbor, and it is connected to the rest of Boston by tunnels and bridges.
The neighborhood has a rich history, dating back to the 1600s, when it was first settled by English colonists. In the 1800s, East Boston became a hub for shipping and industry, with many immigrants from Ireland and Italy moving to the area to work in the shipyards and factories.
Today, East Boston is a vibrant and diverse neighborhood with a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas. It is home to a large Latino population, as well as many immigrants from other parts of the world.
Notable attractions in East Boston include Piers Park, which offers stunning views of the Boston skyline and the harbor, as well as the East Boston Greenway, a network of walking and biking trails that connects several parks and open spaces in the neighborhood. Additionally, East Boston is home to a number of great restaurants and bars, as well as a thriving arts and culture scene.

50+ years ago when I was in my 20s, this was said to be one of Boston's rougher areas. I read a tourist article once back then in which the author jokingly wrote that when subway trains pulled into Maverick Station, they formed into a defensive circle! Since then, the area has been wonderfully transformed with all the new construction and new parks making it a beautiful neighborhood. Many thanks for this excellent tour!

That was a huge vacant. We could get into the fence in certain parts. I don't know if someone cut a hole in the fence or if there was a door.. but I remember walking across it and onto the docks to go fishing with my grandfather once. 😊

Holy smokes has the area changed! I'm from PA, but I worked at that 'Active Shipyard' from October 1982 until March of 1984. In fact, the brown brick building by the gate was where I, and 15 other welders from Pennsylvania stayed. I had an excellent 2nd floor harbor view from where those 3 windows are located. Also, the skyline view at night was awesome with the 'Pru' being the focal point. None of us were strangers in Joey Dee's either! Thanks for the memories, and nicely done!

The hill on the right side of you was called the Rockies. It had overgrown tall weeds that we would venture through and go exploring on adventures walking through breaking them as we went. I'll never forget there was an old mattress down on the bottom at the end of it near the stairs you past and someone was living there when I was a child . We used to go down this hill on our sled in the winter. My sister broke her arm there was no fence and we fly right into the Street but there was no cars there there was no traffic. At the top of the hill is my school yard that was the first elementary school I went to. I started kindergarten there it was and still is Samuel Adams Elementary School and had my first fight in the school yard early 1970's..

That ocean and the view of Boston was my view from my living room growing up. I didn't realize how privileged we were. We were actually not wealthy at that time . My grandparents first arrived in New York, Ellis Island like most of the Italian imagrants at that time. Then they went and stayed with family in the North End. My grandfather was a Masonary and bought the house on 136 Marginal Street. My mother grew up in that house before she got married and from 3 years old until 8 years I on that street.

That Park wasn't there when I was a kid there was a big chain link fence. It ran that whole length of the street from where you started where I said it was blocked off. Further up there was also a train track an old trains were still in there when I was child. I have a picture of me and my brother and my on one of the trains when I was 5 years old.

Oh okay this is where the fence was and it was blocked off to the public at this exact spot. We couldn't go in here this is where they did and started when I was a child in the 1970s. I don't know when they open that up it was closed in the 80s too I believe. That's where the fence was and there was a military base or something.
