I was actually going to send a DM on twitter about the reverb on the vocal hooks. I noticed the vocals initially have very little reverb, and it seems to automate or curve in, quickly. It lets the phrasing be clean, but the width and stereo of the hook tail out so nicely. The L/R delayed panning is a real signature touch of yours in parallel to your use of reverb. Any info you could shine on the reverb aspect of the vocal top line? Your thoughts on when and how you utilize it for space/width would be great!

I'd have to double check, but I would imagine the big verbs/delays are getting slightly sidechained by the dry signal, or using trackspacer. The big verbs often have quite long pre delay too. I'm not sure if I did it in this case, but I'll often pull down the centre of the verbs a bit too, so they're mostly out wide. The more general delay is ohmboyz, which has an lfo on the filter as well as the panning which keeps things moving around so the main dry sound is still in the middle and not getting too swamped by fx. The general reverb is RVerb. I can't remember what outboard was used for the big sounds, but imagine it was probably Bam/Big Sky for reverbs and most likely a Bim/Volante for the delays, as I was using those a lot when making this album! Hope that helps, just about to run out for the day!

Loved watching this and to see how your producing mind works! 👍 I listen to and enjoy all the music you’ve released over the last few years. One question: How do you record and mix your vocals? They’re always so gorgeous. I’m a novice, self-teaching, and progressing nicely, but every now and then I need to throw in the towel and ask a pro like you on something specific. 😂 I’ve got the hang of panning and moving things elsewhere in the stereo field to enable different elements and sounds to become more clear, apparent, and to stand out in mix more, but my vocals are always dreadful. They always sound a bit overwhelmed by everything else in the mix. Muddy, I guess. Do you have any advice for a good effects chain for the vocal track for at least a starting point? I use Ableton Live 11.

Thanks Martin, so glad you’re enjoying the music and the streams. In recent times I normally just get the vocals from the singers, but most of those are just dry recordings, microphone straight into pre-amp/soundcard. Ease of vocal mixing can often be down to what the other sounds are doing, and there actually being a natural space for them to sit, vs having to carve out a space for them. So tracks with a lot going on are normally a nightmare for me in terms of vocals, and more sparse tracks without too many sounds in the same frequency are so much easier. So I’d apply some of what you’ve been doing in terms of the stereo field to the spectrum too, cutting out stuff which doesn’t need to be there for lots of sounds. If you’ve got pads and atmospherics it can sometimes help to play with mid/side processing, and just pulling down the mid frequencies in the mid channel to get a bit more space for the vocals. In terms of the vocal chain (providing pitch and timing are taken care of) I would normally start with an eq to roll off the low end and extreme highs, with a general lift with a high shelf. Normally a compressor or 2, one mainly to tame peaks and another one doing more of a glue to get the levels more consistent across it. A few de-essers focussing on different frequencies. Then maybe another EQ to sweeten it a bit, with some top end air boosting. Providing you’ve got enough headroom, the easiest way to get them to cut through is just volume automation as well, lifting any more gentle parts and taming the more extreme moments. You can look into using plugins like trackspacer or other sidechained stuff to bring down other sounds when the vocal is there, though i prefer to do that through automation on all the tracks. Only other things I can think of is how you use any harmony parts, I normally like having several of these panned hard left and right which gives a fuller sound. If you’re using any fx sends I’d definitely recommend making sure those are eq’d to keep them from getting too muddy and in the way of the main vocals. Hope that helps!
