WAKING UP AT 5AM » Why I don't do it

WAKING UP AT 5AM » Why I don't do it. Hello my friends! Let's talk about waking up early, and having a productive day. In this video, I share my reasons for not doing the 5am wake up, or even the 4am wake up. I also share my schedule for a productive morning working from home on my channel.
I thought it was interesting that many people are searching for terms like "how to wake up at 5am and not be tired" or "how to wake up at 5am without an alarm", or "how to be a morning person". The fact that many people are looking for answers to these questions, leads me to think that lots of you have tried, but have experienced some challenges. If you're that person, my advice would be to stop waking up at 5am. :-)
I have always been an early riser and I usually wake up early. But lately, there are so many videos to be found about how to wake up at 5am like a boss, or 5am morning routine. It's definitely becoming a trend. And while I don't have a problem with the concept of waking up earlier, I do think it's important that people don't feel pressured to get up at 5am as well. In this video, I explain why I feel this way.
People say that "waking up 5am is changing my life" and their 5am morning routine is helping them with being more productive. And if that's the case, then I say great! But for me, I personally think there are other factors at play that have a bigger influence on productivity than the hour at which we wake up. And that's why I felt like making this video and sharing my thoughts on the topic.
What are your thoughts about this? Have you tried the 5am wake up or even waking up at 4am? And what were your experiences with it? I'd love to hear about it in the comments section.
Sending lots of love,
🌼 Vera

Grateful for your message Vera. I doubt that everyone who claims to have jumped on the trend of waking at 5:00 or 5:30 are actually consistent. I love waking up early in the summer when the sun rises early. Especially weekends because it is so quiet while others in my neighbourhood sleep in. I also love waking early when on vacation. Again, I go with the rising sun. However, in the darker mornings of winter, I wake naturally around 7 am. Sometimes, I “have to” wake at 5:30 when I have a business event to attend. Not a happy camper and I notice that it makes for a very long and exhausting day because I will still work to my usual quitting time. I still run a business at 67 and I do find that I need to monitor my energy resources. It’s a lifetime challenge to find the right pace for doing your best work. As with any other trend, be cautious. Be your own counsel. Do what’s best for you.

I've recently been searching for the "how to be a morning person" videos, and you're right - it's because I've always struggled to be that person. I love your message in this video, Vera. We often spend so much time trying to be someone we're not, instead of embracing who we are and finding what works best for us. Thank you for the helpful reminder! :)

@Rachel Michelle thing is as well - 'people' in general shame anyone waking up late... I was never a morning person. I never will be. I go to bed when people wake up and have my most creative outbursts and ideas in the middle of the night. When people give me 'that look' because I get up at 12 - well yes, they don't know that I've been up and about until 6am, and am even running on too little sleep for the 'fear of being judged'. So yes, thank you Vera for this lovely reminder

I have never been even vaguely tempted to get up at 5am for no good reason! My day begins when the alarm wakes me at 7am and at the weekend I wake naturally around 8:30. I’m more than happy with that 😁. I’m amazed to hear that getting up at 5am is a trend, people should think for themselves. Thank you for addressing the balance Vera 😊

I tried to wake up at 5:00am for the longest time. When I worked in an office, getting up early helped me have a relaxed start to the day and get some work on my novel done before going to work. But now that I don’t work in an office anymore, i find there isn’t much of a reason to get up at the crack of dawn. Also, my family is definitely more nocturnal, so going to bed at 9:00pm meant missing spending time with them. So now I get up at 8:00am and still get everything done. Thank you so much for this message. I’ve been feeling a bit down about not waking up so early, but you’re right, if one doesn’t have to, then there’s really no reason to. Love your content as always! 🥰🥰

I wake up at 4:30-5am. Only about 3-4 days a week. And it's simply because I enjoy the feeling of being up before everyone else. Not even in a competitive way, not because I'm trying to "hustle" but I just like the calm before the storm (I live in NYC, so buy 6-6:30am, things are already getting loud, depending be where you live). Especially during the winter, when it's still very dark at 7am. I just love that feeling. And it's also because I do tend to have a bit of a commute, I HATE rushing (it's not fun or cool to me at all) and I can go at MY pace. Not the hustlers pace. I stretch, pray, meditate, read, do some warm up exercises, listen to music, take a cold shower. I ENJOY my morning, instead of getting out of bed having to hustle, hustle, hustle, be stressed and just another disgruntled person on the metro. But sometimes, I wake up later and I've become okay with that. I have realized how important sleep is and I am so sick of the mantra "I'll sleep when I'm dead". Rather, if you don't get enough sleep you will be dead. I get an adequate amount of sleep and I am okay with that.

Loved this video! It’s so so true! I wake up between 9-10am and am most productive in the afternoon. I also think it depends where you live. Here in Spain everything is later, lunch time is 2pm and evening meal is 9-10pm so it just makes the routine a bit later and it really suits me! I’ve always been more active later in the day! It’s a shame that people think others are lazy for waking up later, in the end I get as much done in a day as anyone else, just my timetable is different! Sending a big hug 🤗

Great video! I am also a morning person and had a period during holidays when I was working for12h five times a week. So I started waking up at 5am in order to have a peaceful mornig, eat healthy, spend some time in the garden. Obviously I was sleeping for 6-7h but I thought it must be a price to have time for myself each day. And indeed it was nice, it was working. But in the long run, especially when autumn arrived it wasn't so anymore, I started to feel those lost hours of sleep. Now I still wake up early, but at 6 or 7 and I still have time for everything I want, university and studying 😉 There is no need for strict rules for ourselves, we are all human and I believe we need more compassion and self love towards ourselves ❤ that's why I really loved all your kind and very reasonable thoughts on that 🙏❤ xo

I can do it, but I need to go to bed at 9:30 pm at the latest. I have two grown up teens at home. For various reasons going to bed before them is impossible for me. So 5:45 am is my optimum wake up time. I feel really productive that way. And I totally agree, it’s what we make of time we are awake that really matters. Thank you for this video!

Glad you made this video! I have a friend that is the most productive person I know and she is a night owl that isn’t her best waking up at 5 am. Neither am I and like you my brain wakes up around 10 am, so that is my best time for creative work, and I like a slow morning before that. My tip is to also not only pay attention to your energy cycle during the day, but to look at the menstrual cycle too if you are menstruating (moon cycle works too if you’re not) and seasonal changes. I find I do certain tasks better depending on where I am in my cycle, like editing & rusting during my premenstrual phase, also I find myself needing way more downtime in winter compared to summer where I am more of a social butterfly. Another thing to pay attention to is which activities you do that takes energy/ gives energy. This takes time to figure out but it helps taking notes during a month and evaluate what works for you.

I am like you Vera. I do not get up at 5 or 6. Unless of course I have to get an early flight or..... Some people of KZread are kind of presumptive in their channels. They think because something works for them, then that is the way to go. I feel each one to their own way of doing things. It is like when minimalists count the things they have and think as they have 100 things then you must declutter. I am a minimalist, buy what I eat / use but for sure I am not so crazy to count my things.

Yes I appreciate that you mentioned how it seems so trendy and as though that's definitely the best way to be productive. I haven't tried waking up at 5 since working at coffee shops and hating that we had to work so early and get up before the sun! I love having the sun wake me up as that feels more natural to me. Also, I'll point out this goes for working out as well - I had once tried to become a "work out in the morning" person but it turns out my physical energy is highest in the evening so I terminated that habit. Like with waking up early, if working out in the morning works for you, then great! If not, don't go against your flow, go with it and adapt your schedule accordingly!

If I wake up at 5am I'm feeling sleepy by about 3pm and I need a nap if I want to be able to do anything. I find that it's better to sleep longer as it makes me more alert and focused. Having more awake hours doesn't mean being more productive. It's better to have less awake time but being more focused, prioritise and not waste time on unnecessary things.

I wake up at 5am as this is the only time I'll get my workout done. I'm on the train for work at 6:30am, so it's also a need so I don't have to rush around in the morning. When I get home I just want to relax into the night with the family. So I have found it extremely beneficial to me. But like you mentioned in the video I do go to sleep at 9pm.

For many years I had an early start job and long commute that forced me to be up by 5 AM. That is no longer the case. I prefer to get up between 6 and 7 AM based on my schedule for that day. I should probably be consistent with it. Optimally, I would like to get up with the sunrise or slightly before it. I agree that the hour you rise is not important. What is important is what you do with your time awake. Knowing when you perform best can be used to your advantage to do tasks that take more or your concentration. You are sending the right message, as far as I am concerned.

Good video. I'm retired, and do some part time work from home. I usually get up around 7, and go to bed at 10 or 11. Sometimes I wake up at 5 and feel anxious, so I get up and start my day instead of wallowing in whatever. It's interesting because it's still dark here, and my parrot sleeps until 7. I make my coffee, have breakfast and since I'm usually tired, I do busy work that doesn't require a lot of thought. I'm very happy to be living without a set schedule. I plan my day in my planner while I have my coffee, and as long as I get everything done that's just fine.

Before even watching this video, I have to say that I’ve JUST posted a video about this and as a highly sensitive person and I’ve never been able to wake up before 9am. As a barista our shifts can start as early as 6am so we wake up at 4am or even 5am if we’re opening the store. I get overstimulated and “worked up” and by the time I would get home I would have panic attacks and feel “out of reality” like I wasn’t human and my body was shutting down. My sensitive system is more sensitive than the average person and as you said, I need a lot of sleep, more than the average person. Thank you so much for this video

Couldn’t agree more. Many people work shift work and it isn’t as cut and dry. If I’m working at 7am, I’m up at 5:20am.. make my bed, have breakfast, 3S’s and drive to work without rush. If I’m working in the early afternoon, I’ll wake up at 8am. Mostly I follow what I feel, whilst being productive and not lazy. 🙏🏼🏄🏽‍♂️💦🇦🇺

I always figured, why does it matter when we get our work done as long as it gets done? I loved the new point of view in this video. My Favourite Time to Workout ist between 5-7 p.m. The Energy needs to „Laod“ before I can burn it Off. Working pur in the Morning offen Makes Me crankyand exhausted for the Rest of the day. Best Time to work and be Creative is from 8 p.m to 2 a.m. Naturally, I can really get some kind of flow then. Going to bed by 9 would make Me very dissapointed that there is no Real „evening“ in my day 😅

In the weekdays my alarm goes of at 4.45 in the morning. As gardeners the old routine is to start early so we start at 7 every morning. When I lived in the same town as I was working in, I actually used to start 6.30 because I love to be first at work and start the working day soft without having so many people around. Now I commute so even though I rise earlier and take the first bus available I start work at 7.10. But Yes I do start to brush my teeth etc at 8 in the evening. But I don't mind turning the hole day earlier, I don't follow and TV programmes or having kids. The only thing that sometimes can be annoying is if there is any kind of activity that I would like to attend. Like meditation, it starts at 8 in the evening and then I am really tired...

I once tried to wake up at about 4.30 a.m but I realised that it's not for me. Sure, I could do my exercise but I could not shower, clean or listen to music that early because I lived in an apartment. So I would just have disturbed my neighbours. I'm more a nightowl than a morningperson. So I can easily work in the evening, go to bed at about 1 or 2 a.m and sleep until 10-11 a.m. I need about 9 hours of sleep to feel at least a bit productive.

I cannot for the life of me wake up at 5 am. The best time for me is 7:30. Sleep has been a problem for me for years so I have to be super careful about sleeping enough. If I have to do some task that requires focus, I do it in the morning. Soon after lunch time I start to get tired and then it's harder to get things done. Also, I have to save the rest of my energy for when kids come home from school, so afternoons are more easy going.

You can wake up at 5 a.m. every day until you're tired and broken, but if the reasons for your waking up at that time and all its good intentions don't come to fruition, then maybe it just was not meant to happen on that day...or the next...or the next. You can wake up every day with your best motives in mind, but if it's not the time...it's just not the time. You need to give yourself permission to be a human being every now and then. Sleeping in is definitely a very human thing to be doing. After all, it's not a crime. People forget that sometimes.

I have tried a few times to wake up at 5 but with a 5yr old and 3 Yr old who don't sleep well it's been a non starter! I'm usually exhausted and know I won't be fully functioning during the day when it matters as I'm with clients!

I wake up at 3am for work and go to bed at 7:30pm. Work five days a week. I was fine for the first year or two but it’s starting wear on me. I am a morning person. I naturally get up at 6:30-7. 3am is too early for me anymore
