WAIT... Remember Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja?
Ойын-сауық
The most requested cartoon I cover, by far, Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja is a surprise that sure packs a punch. Only lasting for two seasons and leaving on such an open ended note, Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja now has this slice of fans wanting more even all these years later. Today, let's take a look at what made Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja so special, how it came to be and what happened to it!

IMO Kick Buttowski was cancelled because Season 2 started having disturbing elements which could scare young audiences, leading to low levels in audiences. (No joke, a few did scare me when I was younger ESPECIALLY that Detained episode) Otherwise, it would be amazing to see a Season 3, along with Randy Cunningham. Not a big fan of MML though.

The Ninjanomicon not using _real_ Japanese writing actually makes sense, even if unintentionally, as ninja clans would devise their own secret code languages to guard their secrets. So "looks like a bunch of badly written kana at a glance, doesn't make sense if you actually try reading it as the nearest visually matching glyphs" works.

Funnily enough, if you took all of Ben Schwartz’s voice acting roles and put them in a vent diagram, Rand Cunningham would be in the center. Weird considering it’s seemingly Ben’s first role, it’s original character, and it’s not blue.
Few things I enjoyed of this show: The Ninjanomicon style for each of its lessons looked different because each one was written by a different Ninja down the line. Another thing, because the Ninja is a title passed down along the years, people already know about the Ninja and theres a lot of fans in the student body.

Can I say that if they did actually put readable text, it would take so long to have it say actual stuff, especially for scenes that aren’t too long. And if they did put random gibberish, the people who can read it would be kinda upset. Looks like it to us Americans, and it doesn’t upset people who would be able to read it, and also to blurble blabble things in there and have a life. This show was actually my first introduction to Ben Schwartz, which solidified him as one of my favorite voice actors/actors and comedians of all time. Needless to say, not only does this extremely underrated show deserves the third season it never got, but Randy, in my opinion, is probably one of the most powerful Disney cartoon protagonists there is. (Also, probably something nobody really considered, but does anyone else even acknowledge that Randy’s Ninja Rage is virtually identical to Bill from Gravity Falls when HE gets angry? Surprised there’s not much fan art of that)

Randy was also my introduction to Ben Schwartz. 😆 I absolutely love his voice work.
I really liked this show despite how underrated it is.
1. I remember seeing Jed Elinoff & Scott Thomas's work on Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated season 1, which made me excited for this show. It doesn't disappoint. 2. I can say the voice acting in the show is spot on in part because of the show's voice director Ginny McSwain. She's had decades of experience in the industry, but the standouts include projects like Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop, various Winnie The Pooh projects, Jimmy Neutron, Chalkzone, Transformers Rescue Bots, The Batman (2004), and Gravity Falls.
As a former tuba player, that split second cut at 4:55 of the kid emptying the spit valve into a bucket is almost too realistic.
One of my favorite things I love about Randy Cunningham, besides the characters and the character and monster designs by Jhonen Vasquez is the Entire voice cast and it's a huge voice cast for sure from Ben Schwartz, Andrew Caldwell, John DiMaggio, Kevin Michael Richardson, Tim Curry (the Legendary *GOAT* himself), Jim Rash, along with Dee Bradley Baker, Scott Menville, Grey Delisle-Griffin, Kari Wahlgren, Dave Wittenberg, Carlos Alazraqui, Fred Tatasciore, April Stewart, Keith Ferguson, Rob Paulsen, Jim Cummings, Gary Anthony Williams, Sarah Hyland, Cassie Scherbo, Jennifer Tilly, Jason Earles, Annie Potts, Bobcat Goldthwait, Andy Dick, Andy Richter, David Koechner, Danni Pudi, Paul Reubens, Jon Lovitz, Bill Hader, John Oliver, Simon Pegg, Patrick Warburton, Laura Morano, Sterling Knight, Parvesh Cheena, Piper Curda, Joel McHale, Megan Mullally, Judy Reyes, Richard Kind, Steve Zahn, Neil Flynn (The Middle), Robert Englund, James Hong, Gilbert Gottfried (RIP), and John Witherspoon (RIP). That's a huge variety of voice actors and celebrities all in this aninated series. Speaking of which I notice that Jim Rash (Principal Slimovitz), Joel McHale (First Ninja) and Danny Pudi (Lavander) who were in this series also worked on _Community_ along with the fact that Jim Rash, Danni Puddi and Ben Schwartz would later reunite again for the 2017 _DuckTales_ reboot. Also, if _Randy Cunningham_ did continued just imagine if they had brought in more actors from _Community_ such as Yvette Nicole Brown, Jillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, and Ken Jeong, those from _Parks and Recreation_ which previously had Ben Schwartz involved such as Amy Phoeler, Rashida Jones, Nick Offerman, Chris Pratt, Aziz Anzari and Aubrey Plaza or even the likes of Sandra Oh, Stephanie Beatriz, Ron Perlman, Steve Blum, Ben Diskin, Yuri Lowenthal and Mark Hamill.

I'm pretty sure this was intenational; just like they made Ben Schwartz shout "It's the woooorst" as Sonic referencing his role as Jean Ralphio. These sorts of easter eggs are absolutely stellar
I enjoyed this show, but it seems like the creators seemed to officially move into live action after this show. But they are still working for Disney. After Best Friends Whenever, they created the That's So Raven sequel - which they showran for the first season, left, then came back in the current retooled fifth season. I do find it interesting that both this show and Best Friends Whenever were cancelled after 2 seasons.
The main thing I remember from this show was that it had a really great episode structure. The ninjanomicon would attempt to teach Randy a "ninja lesson" at the start of an episode, but he'd only understand it during the climax, and that's what would help him save the day. It allows for great story set-ups and pay-offs, with Randy trying to understand the lesson throughout an episode but accidentally running into trouble while doing so. But more importantly, in my opinion, some the ninjanomicon's teachings aren't just applicable to the ways of the ninja, but to the ways of life in general, and its format is one that can more easily have its lessons stick into the minds of its viewers, even if they don't realize it.
Jordan, I want to thank you so much for doing a video on _Randy Cunningham 9th Grade Ninja._ This show was Bruce and the Cheese, along with Ben Schwartz doing a phenomenal job as Randy Cunningham, not to mention this was _Miraculous Ladybug_ before we had _Miraculous Ladybug_ due to the fact that both the Sorcerer and Hawk Moth curse/transform their victims into an evil entity/monster when the victim becomes vulnerable and scared. Hope you get to do videos dedicated to Motorcity, Tron: Uprising and especially Penn Zero as those shows like Randy Cunningham did came out on Disney XD, with the latter hardly being talked about as much.

Maybe I cared more about their school life because I was going through similar experiences in middle/high school, but man this show is a strong childhood memory for me
I loved this show as a kid and I realize that it felt very much so like what a teenager would day dream about. The cultural appropriation kinda fits thematically since American High Schoolers, even today, love Japanese media but often put little effort into learning about the culture that made the media. Usually that happens later in life, especially in college where they can take in depth courses to learn about it easily. But as a teen with no real care for anything outside finding friends and things to enjoy that aren't purely acedmic, it makes sense.

When I first saw the commercial for it, I was like "Oh god, it's gonna be one of THOSE shows" and the Pilot didn't help as much as I wanted it to. But As I watched more and more episodes, I began to love it. I thought the concept was actually new and different, the humor had pretty solid moments, the character interactions were great and I loved it as a whole. It actually FELT different and I wished Disney didn't cancel it or shut it down (or whatever they did to not go through with another Season).
i love that jhonen is the character designer !! i always loved his art style and it goes to show that it can work in a darker story (johnny the homicidal maniac) and something that’s literally a disney show!
Coincidentally the show came out when I was starting high school too. Loved watching this show when it came on and constantly played the first 2 flash games CONSTANTLY whenever I got on the computer.
When this show aired I was currently in High School trying to find myself. I was either in clubs, with friends, or on dates. When I would have free time for myself I'd be playing videos games. I think I only watched 1-2 episodes on TV but I never thought it was something I NEEDED to watch.
I remember watching this show when I was a kid and it literally predicted me to apparently having interest on Shinobi/Ninja and japanese culture sometimes thanks to Naruto. Teenagers that turns into monsters because of their emotions did well more than Miraculous Ladybug.
I really need to watch this show all the way through. I like the twists and turns it chooses to make that I've only seen glimpses of.
Gosh I was obsessed with this show in middle school, I remember being sad it suddenly got removed from being streamed on Disney XD only to later find it on Disney plus again like a few years later. I loved the animation and the small snipets of the creators just going all out on the project. I’d definitely check it out if a third season ever came out!
Sounds like this show came out right after I stopped watching television- but damn does it look interesting! I'd definitely be willing to sit down and watch the series, and I'm sure if I did, I'd be looking for more. It looks like it would be right up my alley for casual watching!

@@JordanFringe94 great, can’t wait to see it!
I had entire episodes of this show memorized back then
literally one of my favorite cartoons of all time its always made me upset that its not talked about more
I loved this show so much, i used to have a dedicated tumblr blog and all. Fun show, i do hope the show returns someday
I actually went back and watched it earlier this year, I genuinely enjoyed it.
Dude its always a rare treat whenever you cover a show ive never even heard of. Great video Jordan! Btw I loved the "young emo Jordan" cameo
I LOVED rc9gn growing up, this show is pure nostalgia. Hard to believe this is over 10 years old..
Bro the nostalgia. This show came out before I started high school. I use to draw the suit all the time
I remember seeing the title on the guide, but I never watched it because I had aged out of the demographic. However, if I would have known that the creator of Invader Zim drew for it, I probably would have given it a shot. I might go looking for it after I am done watching some stuff.
I always wanted to watch this because I heard that Jhonen Vasquez had something to do with the show. Also I think there was a Ninja Turtles run on Nickelodeon that was made by or the character designs were by JV. I love that dudes work. Never got to catch those other shows he had a hand in, only zim and his earlier, crazier comics. JTHM, I Feel Sick, Squee, etc. Awesome artist.

I don't think Vasquez was involved in Rise of the TMNT, but this show and Randy Cunningham do have Ben Schwartz in common. Playing a teenage ninja with red markings on his face for both shows.
Thank you so SO much for covering this show! RC9GN was the beginning of my love for action shows and I really believe it deserves to be talked about more! I'm so glad you got to it, I just love your style of video and I knew it would be a great show for you to delve into!
Ive been waiting so long for someone to talk about this great show. Im in the middle watching it again right now
