Wagon Wheel Chandelier from Dad's Childhood Homestead! / Ep107 / Outsider Cabin Build

Smoke from the Canadian wildfires continues to thicken, so I began thinning the trees around the cabin...just to be safe. I also built a rustic chandelier from an old wagon wheel, which I discovered on my dad's childhood homestead shortly, after his passing. Then, I rebuilt the loft ladder, and contemplate the future of the cabin build.

I still think a copper or brass plaque with both names on it would be a nice tribute. You both have worked so very hard on this build. I think a little recognition for the next generations to come will know the father and son who gave so much for them to enjoy. Again, welcome home!!

    Do the porch, first, and make it big enough to handle your tools. This way everything is under cover and easily accessible for building out the rest of your beautiful cabin. I love that your father's wagon wheel has been put to such a good and symbolic use, where his light will be shining down on your and your family.

    Hello, I really enjoy your videos. Thinning the trees is a good idea to save your cabin from any wildfires. The smoke has been pretty bad at times here in northern NY. Stay safe.

  • @boldlygo3469
    @boldlygo346910 ай бұрын

    Good idea, thinning the trees. The “huggers” will hate it, but may intelligence prevail. A burned tree isn't going to be any use to anyone. A cut tree can be used later for various reasons or purposes. You've put a lot of time and effort into your cabin, and you have a right and a responsibility to protect your investment. Using the old wagon wheel as a chandelier is a great idea and fitting for the rustic look of the cabin. I wish you had shown the process of cleaning and paining the wheel. Oh, well … we get the idea. Another great video.

    A lot of us are saying save the indoor stuff for cold weather, but also consider that getting the porch built now means that you will have a better entry method in the rains of autumn & the snows of winter, too. (If nothing else, it'll give you a place to stick a boot cleaner/brush thingy to get most of the mud & snow off before you go inside!)

    There are some sensible ideas below recommending the front porch and waiting on the kitchen for later. But a kitchen is the heart of the home. And while it may not be as logical as a porch as far as the timeline would dictate, a kitchen is more important for the family being able to fully use the cabin sooner. It would also add more value than a porch. Like you, I learned recently that tomorrow is not promised for any of us. So speaking from my heart, I suggest that you make your cabin more functional for your family by adding a kitchen sooner rather than later.

    I’d be doing the front porch next as it will give you a covered area that can be snow free to do some work outside in winter. Then do the inside work, kitchen and stuff as the weather gets really cold. As an Australian I can identify with those wild fires. Clear all trees and undergrowth from close to the cabin and fill up any holes under the base and roof area of the cabin to prevent sparks entering. If the fires start coming closer, get the hell out of there. Stay safe. 🇦🇺🦘🦘🇦🇺

I hope the porch is as wide as the house, with substantial depth. as well, the stairs being proportional - 5'-6' in length... You know what I mean. Not forgetting the back porch, which may not be as significant, but still important... *Every time I watch you, I'm reminded there is still happiness and good in the world. God bless you & yours* .

    What a beautiful reminder of your father & everytime you turn it on it will remind you that he is looking down with pride.I think building the porch would be a good idea before winter & work on the inside in the cold months.🙂🇨🇦🙏🙏🙏🙏

    Do the porch whilst it’s fine. You can do the kitchen when the weather changes. Loved watching you build the cabin. It’s truly magnificent. Your dads help in the start will always make it special. ❤

    Front porch! The perfect place for deep though/ counting blessings/ and sipping coffee ❤. Although a front porch will slow the other projects completion because who wants to work when you can sit on the porch and sipping coffee😂. That chandelier has so many biblical ties. I love all that it stands for!

    That looks like a drive wheel from an old side delivery hay rake. A very nice addition and fitting tribute to your Dad!

    Thank you for giving me the credit for suggesting you use your father's wagon wheel as a chandelier... I also recommended that you use the structure you created for the solar array as a workshop... you the man...
