I was just wondering, my service man told me that nowadays veven the new Volvos are c.ap, mainly because their life span is intentionally something like 6 yrs. And that goes for all the new cars. Since they started replacing bits in the engine and all within the car with plastic where proper iron should be. Volvos have started with it too long ago. Now it gone really bad, he said. Would you know anything about it? Would you say that this XC90 made 2005 should still have the iron used where appropriate? That the engine may last longer or at least be repairable for longer time.... how it used to. Thanks.

I have opinions on these things that’s for sure. Everything has become white goods with a built in shelf life. Cars, trucks, machinery that are 100 years old all work fine, you used to be able to fit a new piston/valves at the side of the road, granted everything is much more efficient these days but they don’t want things to last. The Euro 3 D5 in my opinion is the best we’re going to see now. It still had a metal rocker cover, yes it has an EGR but it’s pretty easy to maintain compared to the Euro 4 with swirl flaps and emissions oriented mapping. What I don’t understand is the older engines were better on fuel so therefore used less fuel, is that not better for the environment than having lower emissions but using more fuel? Volvo are Chinese owned now and my only appreciation of them is the safety side of it. Pre-2006 XC90 and similar ages Japanese cars (Land Cruiser, Hilux, Shogun, Navara) are probably the best things left compared to today’s offerings, heavy on fuel but built relatively properly to last.

Hello again, thank you for replying. Mine is 4 gear only and eats even the grass on the side of the road too :-) but still when I can open the hood I see the parts and I can change the battery, the bulbs ... at least some and once the tank door got stuck and again, I found help on the internet and helped myself. With new cars you cannot touch anything and only rely on the service.... this is insane. Taking peoples powers away from them. Really. My parents had a Philco washing machine for 25 years. I wish I understand how things work and I would start producing simple products that would last. Not having fancy programmes and displays but would get the job done. And with the emissions..... the whole Green deal and pollution and scarcity of the resources is a scum. Not true. A one volcano erruption produces so much harmful gases that the whole mass of humans on this earth would not manage to produce in hundred of years. Same the plankton in the oceans, swamps and permafrost..... that is the biggest damp filled with dead bodies of all sorts of species. Earth is well equipped to bear and take care of that. Yet the geoingeneering and spraying and wether manipulation....... that is a problem. Bringing harmful particles into the atmosphere is no good..... so a few reckless individuals is ruining the weather and atmosphere but blame the masses who are the ones to pay for it all........ Sad, right? Anyway, thank you so much for replying. I am happy to have my old Volvo XC90. I think I will stick to it. @@IAMASPANNER
