Swapping Halogen Headlights - H11 to H9 conversion

Converting H9 bulb to fit H11 socket in my 09 Volvo XC70.
H9 - 65Watt gives more light compared to stock H11 -55Watt.

I just did this using the hot metal to slice off the tab. I didn't have a torch so I used my gas range burner to heat up a thin flathead screwdriver. Took longer to heat up of course but nothing crazy, just a few minutes. Worked perfectly.

My UK 2009 Volvo V70 has an Active Bi Xenon for dipped and Halogen for the main beam (the manual states it is an H9 but it is fitted with H7 55w), and I've updated it to a Philips 12972XV+S2 X-tremeVision Halogen Headlamp H7, 12 V, 55 W (much brighter, whiter and further reaching). I've also gradually been altering all the bulbs I can to much brighter LEDs, Number Plate, Boot, Interior Cabin Lights, Map Lights, Glovebox, Interior Door Handle Mod, Footwell, Front Parking and Side Marker lights in Door Mirrors. Wish I had an Under Bonnet light fitted, would be very handy.

This is not safe in these headlights. As you can see at the end, these headlights are reflectors that lack a full cap shield, having only a partial ring around the end of the bulb. The H11 has a blacktop on the end preventing light from going directly forward, while the H9 does not. The result of this is that you will get a spray of glare into oncoming traffic coming off the tip of the bulb, which does not have a tightly controlled shape. In an application like this, a high performance H11 like the Philips XtremeVision is probably the best choice.

How he manages to remove the main headlight cable connection so easily is amazing as it takes two flat head screw drivers for me to remove it. Not sure what year his Volvo is but mine takes a different bulb than the one shown. Higher wattage bulbs use more power which brings me to wonder about the wire gage, alternator output and battery resource along with why they put the small tab he removed from the H9 bulb ? Does it or will that affect any warranty issues initiated by fire caused by electrical changes ? Just wondering as it may be perfectly safe and ok but why make H9 bulbs with small tabs if it wasn't intended for a purpose of defeating the use in H11 sockets ?

Did the conversion a few years ago, worked great. Low beams stopped working this week, looked at the headlight assembly, the harness was fine, however, the insulation around the wired had degraded, exposing the wires. They crossed, shorted out and melted the harness to the low beam bulb. Not sure if the excess heat put out by the H9 has anything to do with it, this is a 11 year old car after all. If there is a fuse, I am sure it has blown. Looked everywhere, can't find a fuse for the beam. Here is a high beam fuse, but no low beam fuse. There is a hint that the CES module controls the low beams. Any ideas?

+svergie2 NA is always behind in lighting technology, i think that it is their legislations which can't keep up with the advance in technology, that's why new laser and high tech LED lights like Audi's Matrix isn't allowed there yet. With Xenon, i just believe that we here in Sweden prioritize lighting very high because of the darkness, and unlike other countries, drive with the headlights on even during daytime. That's why the longevity and better brightness of Xenon and LED is much higher prioritized here, and why many manufacturers are having them as standard in many cars.
