My dad had an F88 double sleeper back in the 70's, He ran all over the UK and out to the middle east. We even had a family holiday down to Cornwall in 76, he had a trailer to collect from a farm. Five of us slept in the cab, Mother on bottom bunk brother and sister on the top bunk, Dad in the drivers seat, I slept on the engine cover. Great days.

There’s not many in good condition left over here either, in saying that I do have another one in the shed that is reasonably good also but it’s pulled apart and had the rust done. It’s a daycab one. Hi Steve, this video just turned up on my youtube page and I thought "give it a go" and I'm glad I did. I can see how much preparation you did before kicking her over, but I didn't expect the old girl to fire up that quickly (I'm not sure you did either) but it settled down quite quickly. I'm a pom who cut his teeth driving trucks in the late '70s onward, F88/89s were still a common sight then (replaced by F10 and F12). The TD100 (OHV engine) was rated at ~270bhp, which is why they had a 16-sp splitter box for heavy haulage. Like you, I'd love to see this wagon on the road, where it belongs. PS I just subbed to your channels on the basis of this, looking forward to having a rummage through the archives.

Hi mate thanks for watching. I’m trying to grow the channel by sharing what I have in the collection. It’s growing slowly. Any Volvo truck I’ve had here sitting always started easily mate, even when I got them they all sat for years and fired right up. Just the cabs rotted off most of them. There’s an n7 Volvo I started also in the archives somewhere if you look. I had 2 f10 trucks here. Sold both before I started this channel. It will hopefully see the road again mate. I’d like to get the channel to a stage where I can slow back my main job and do some bigger jobs to these old trucks and machines for everyone to watch, so please share if you know anyone that may be interested. I have 2 here that were originally 16speed but were replaced with road rangers, simply because a brand new one is cheaper than rebuilding the 16 speed Volvo box. One is a G89. Great to have you onboard mate and there’s plenty more to come. Will be a lot of American and Australian stuff on here also because I have more of it than European equipment. Thanks again

The F88 cab had already been introduced on the predecessor Titan Tiptop in 1964, but the rest of the truck was redesigned. This included a new engine, a new eight-speed gear box and stronger chassis and suspension. A derivative was the G88 introduced in 1970, which was basically the same vehicle but with the front axle fitted 300 mm (11.8 in) further forward to allow greater axle spread. This was necessary to increase the GCWR up to 52.5 tonnes (51.7 long tons).[3] found on wiki

A lot of these older fuel pumps go to “full fuel” when engine shuts down ready for next start ….add some rust / gunk/ time and when it starts it’s jammed on full fuel ….when this fired up so quickly and began to rev old mate would have been shitting but spotted the cable . I was taught to never start an old engine unless you are ready for an emergency shut down …..pull air filter out and have a pair of overalls ready to chuck in the inlet . Had a D9 engine physically cut its self in half when it slowly went into uncontrolled RPM …multiple rods just gave up
@stevesplacedownunder

I am old mate and I’ve had engines run away many times. I knew this one wasn’t jammed because you can feel through the stopper if it’s full open on these pumps and in this case it wasn’t. The reason it went flat out was the throttle cable was caught and pulled throttle open. I usually pull the rubber inlet pipe of and have a board ready if I’m not sure what they will do. I have 3 of these trucks and the throttle links extend when the cabs raised and if not free enough will do the same thing. That’s how i knew where to control it
Made me jump, thought she was going away when she fired off.

Hey,Steve, I know Aussie hot rodders like early American iron , do they have to convert them to right hand drive? Stay safe mate.
@stevesplacedownunder
Жыл бұрын
Hey mate. Some definitely would be converted and some are left with left hand drive. We are allowed left hand drive stuff over here and it’s fairly common with older imported stuff. But Australia had a lot of the early American stuff anyway which was right hand drive from new so a lot of those are how they were.
Ahh that's such a shame it's got broken axles, such a good runner! Very jealous
