Volvo G88 Truck. Can we get it to move?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this episode we see if we can get the diesel engine going in this Volvo truck. Once we get the engine going we will see if we can move it. My old man bought a brand new G 89 in 1975 to haul logs with, it was 100 ton rated, had 65 000 pound Volvo hub reduction axles, 120 A engine that was 330 hp which was probably really only equal to around 275 hp in US engines. If you compare them to other brands back then, they definitely were the "Rolls Royce" of trucks, they drove smooth and everything about the truck had a feeling of quality. I was not a fan of the radiator mounted in the cab design though, it made the engine very hard to access the front to work on, and that stupid flex radiator hose was very expensive to replace. Volvo fixed this in the F series and raised the cab a little so there was less engine cover hump and a flatter floor, but still the G series was a damn good truck!

Graduated from a Ford D1000 with a 6v53 Detroit to a G88 when I was a young fella it was a major step up. Had the volvo 16 speed with a separate spitter lever on the dash. It was one of those trucks and you wish you could find restore and enjoy. One of those old trucks you get a soft spot for, they didn't set the world on fire for horse power and engine braking but still loved driving it.

Had an old lady do a Uturn in front of our Volvo with a full bullbar on the open road hauling an empty B-train. She was in a Fiesta or similar. The truck hit her square on, picked it up, and pushed it down the road about 300m. The car was flated down the left side, and the old lady was helped out, shaken but unharmd. The Volvo had a bent step, a cracked headlight seround, and a dent on the right-hand base leg of the bullbar, so no real damage. The cops that showed up couldn't believe what they saw and told the old lady that if she hadn't been hit by a truck with a full bullbar, It would have just rolled over her.

G88 had the front axle set forward, F88 had the front axle set further back, easy way to spot the difference is the access steps, F88 had the steps in front of the front mudguard, G88 behind. We did get the G88 here in the UK, they were rare though, Hays transport in Liverpool had a fleet of them, day cab variants mostly. Love the F88, it was a game changer for haulage and drivers in the UK.

I think the rad cap on that g88 is worth more than some trucks I've had...8^) Nice startup Steve, and a nice assist on the cab lowering by Georgina! The re-plumb / bypass of the air line for the PD was a good temporary fix to try and get things going. Too bad the brakes were stuck. They might be a bit of a rassle to free up. If that middle axle has a broken driveshaft as you suspect, could it be jamming the brakes somehow? Just a thought. Cheers!

That is a Volvo that is no more to be seen in the traffic anywhere. Rust is one issue but other thing is also they might be very beat up over time. The engine sounds nicer than on some much newer trucks out there. LOL that was one serious adult humor joke 😂

Fm Volvo's by comparison, don't seem to rust, they just wear out after 1.5m kms. Had an fh 2010 with 1m kms, 20,000hrs and original motor, box and diffs, obviously not clutch or air compressor. Compare that to a k104.
