Great little truck. British quality and has an apt name for sure…a tough little beast. I would hazard a guess that it has a Perkins 4 liter 6 cylinder that puts out around 100 hp. Thanks for the video, mate.

Rats love a machine like this & its Leyland Terrier Lol. My dad drove a Box Leyland Terrier for British Gas & we moved house with that 1977.Bought back great memories Mate. I started driving 7.5 ton Leyland Terriers in 1987 for Clarke Bakeries at 19 as that was the largest truck you could drive on a car license in UK. Thanks for the video mate.

Couple more tractor revivals would be good. We got one of those old bedfords going about 40 years ago. Buried nose first in the lantana for years. That make good scrub clearing machines. Get em going backwards then into angel and hang on. Boys will be boys 😊

Terrier, Boxer, Clydesdale, Reiver and Super Reiver from memory 🙂 While still badged BMC there was the Laird too. Bit of a pick’n’mix from the heritages of BMC, Albion and Leyland - just like the parts used to build ‘em 😁

Very under rated machines the Leylands, shame they rotted quick but most metal did in that era. Love Fodens myself and a Bedford TK but Leyland made some great machines.

The steering wheel and stalks on it are freom the Leyland T45 series which were after these, this cab update was a refresh until the T45 or Road Runner arrived.

Hi mate, the brown plastic cab came out in the late 70's in the UK. The engine sounded like a Leyland 6/98. The Terrier was a 7.5 ton gross weight, then the Boxer was a 12 ton gross and the Mastiff was 20 ton (I think) with the V8 perkins. The mastiff was a 6 wheeler and prime mover where as the Terrier and Boxer were both 4 wheelers. These are UK spec. Just in case you didn't know the cab can be tilted. Remove the bolt from the UJ at the bottom of the steering column and pull the steering wheel up till it comes out. Then at the back of the cab there is 2 x 3/4 bolts remove them and there should be a catch you pull. These cabs are bloody heavy and need 2 people to lift them as it doesn't have a torsion bar like the Boxer and Mastiff. I do know someone that broke his arm lowering a cab oppps 😂. The cab is not that rusty they were worse than that at 10 year old. Great video, keep them coming.

Hi Stuart thank you mate and sorry for late replies. The cab on this is hydraulic lift. It has a pump that you put a bar into like a jack and up it goes. Very easy this one. The cab isn’t to far gone if someone wanted to restore it. I think it’s in good order for the price. Well worth getting

Glad you got to this one , started my driving career in 1986 on a 1984 terrier with a 20 ft flatbed , felt like the king of the road in it

I had the series before the Terrier, Frame looked the same but a different cab, FG series. I had the FG 550 it was a 4 pot diesel four speed, only used 1st to get out of a rut. solid and simple. Moved on to a Boxer much bigger 6 pot think it was a 5L, simple and solid trucks, would have one now. Cheers for the show.

I use to drive the 6 wheeler V8 Perkins version. Great sound, tough engine. 8 speed box. I drove it for a week on 7 cylinders with a valve head rattling around inside until eventually it went quiet. We took the head off, dug the valve out the top of the piston, put it back together and carried on working..

Quality brand trucks. Killed by lunatics in the British government and Leyland managers and directors, foolish unions and unwilling employers. Then the vultures DAF from Holland (truck division) and Volvo (Bus division) from Sweden came to finish things up. The end of an era where British craftsmanship shined.

Brilliant up to maybe the mid 60’s and then gradually falling behind the competition from mainly German brands. Combine that with mismanagement, foolish unions and all I before mentioned. Whatever the case, the truck and bus departments were taken down by the demise of the car devision that failed to come up with innovative new cars and what they brought out was of terrible quality, the Morris Marina being maybe the worst of them all. So yes, a combination where literally everything failed.

​@leyland9999 The worst car had to be the Allegro 😂. Don't forget that somewhere along the Leyland truck path, it was sold to India and sold as Leyland Ashott. They have kept the name, not like Daf that used Leyland Daf for a few years then dropped it.

@@stuartbailey3824 Ashok-Leyland freed itself from the Leyland empire more or less. What they do is using the best parts of the old Mercedes (LP series) and Leyland trucks and added their own developed parts and (bus)bodies. That proved to be successful for their own and other third world target areas. The reason they still are in business. However, as India is rapidly growing and Ashok do not keep in pace (old obsolete technology) the future doesn’t look too bright is my humble opinion. Interesting though how they cope (or not) with those changes.

The Leyland Terrier and others were built in Bathgate Scotland 4 miles from my house. I can remember them lined up around the factory in the 70s and 80s, virtually all painted white and ready for export. The factory closed in 1986. Now a large housing complex.

Forgot this: the G-cab lived on after Leyland canned it, in Turkey built by BMC Sanayi. The basic cab structure was also used on the Leyland Landtrain and Leyland Landmaster quite late into the ‘80s. Might ease finding cab parts and repair panels at least 🙂 Right, I’ll leave you alone now mate 😆

Most Terriers sold in Australia were fitted with V8 petrol motors, the same one that was used in the P 76 car. The one I drove had 20 inch wheels model TR571 with a 20 foot body. Later on some were fitted with a Perkins 6-247 diesel. Most of the diesels had 16 inch wheels.

Hi Bill yes I believe they were but I haven’t seen one here that isn’t diesel. They were the alloy Rover v8 I think. Apparently there were a lot around but must be all hiding behind blokes sheds. Hi Steve, yes they were based on the Rover V8 but were of 4.4 litre capacity (It is my understanding that the Rover V8's were of 3.5 litre) These motors were first used in the short lived P76 car that were on the Australian market for about 2 years. Leyland released them on the market to compete with the Dodge and International V8's that were popular here during the 60's and 70's. @@stevesplacedownunder

Hi Steve. Not sure if the same for the Australian market but the British ones gained a matt black grille and white outline LEYLAND lettering graphics on a matt black panel below the windscreen in ‘81 alongside the T45 Roadtrain tractor units that launched at that time. Before that they had a polished metal grille and separate white plastic LEYLAND letters on body colour. I’d guess yours is about ‘77-‘78. Decent motors all told; it was the usual Bathgate G-cab habit of going frilly round the edges quite quickly, and the rapid progress the competition was making in terms of performance and comfort that finished most of them off. Nice to see a survivor 🙂

Glad to see you didn't spill yer stress reliever getting out of the ruts with the Leyland. She's running good for having sat so long - and the Chonda pump too. If Leyland had built the white lumber hauler Chloe was in, it mighta been called a Chihuahua! Good on ya for saving the Terrier👍🏻 I saw 2 as a young'un. 1 was a site tipper the other was a refuse lorry like a tipper with a half circle metal canopy with 2 covers either side. Both driver praised them the same, reliably underpowered😄 I'm with ya on dickheads vandalising old machinery. Hey Steve Kym from Adelaide the old Leyland brought back memories,my wife's cousin bought a new Mastif in early 80,s it was V8 Perkins turbo 13 speed Road RANGER 38000 lb diffs ,it was a tipper pulling a 2 axle pig trailer,wasn't a bad unit at the time ,some blokes reckon that was the only good truck Leyland made ,I remember it's competition was the Bedford with the V6 GM but the Leyland had the tilt cab which Mechanics liked ,I think the other competor in that size was the Ford D series with 555 V8 Cummins and road ranger box ,oh and of course the Acco 2150 V8 Cummins ,I was only 20 yrs old and they were a lot of fun to drive not real reliable but hey who cared they all sounded great .Really enjoy your yard full of trucksfrom my youth mate Kym Adelaide

@@stevesplacedownunder Yeh Steve funny the Bedfords weren't a collectors item in the 60,s 70,s I can still remember them going down the road with the engine access hoods up to try and cool the engine on a hot day,the Poms didn't have any idea how to build a vehicle that could handle our summers.my first car in 73 was my granny,s 1952 morris minor ,electric fuel pump so all summer I had to keep stopping and wrapping a wet rag around the fuel pump to stop it vaporizing ,they called the VW Hitler's revenge I think the English cars and trucks were the poms revenge LOL.But all this is what makes me love my always reliable Hilux .Have a nice Day mate Kym

Roger had the best life, a good loving family and a big property to roam around on. I was hoping to meet the little bugger along with you when I get the chance to come back to Australia . Yea . Good grief Steve, I've not seen a Terrier for donkeys. Going back a few moons, they were Leyland's competitor in the British 7.5T GVW market up against Bedford TK/ TL and Ford D-series/ Cargo. They didn't sell as well as either, most I knew of were on urban parcel work with a 4-cyl diesel. I'll do some digging on the interweb.

Hi mate. Not a lot spotted around here either. Not really a truck that our truck enthusiasts really do up here. Spot the odd one on a farm or a horse track watering the track. I have no doubt that the D series and Bedford trucks were more popular because they still appear. Mostly on club events. Still a lot of tk bedfords laying around. They only a little truck so a city delivery truck would suit it just fine

In New Zealand we had them in the same market. I remember a couple of them on the road most were with Market gardeners. It must have been pretty unremarkable as I know I have driven a couple but I don't remember how they handled or performed.

Leyland built a prototype of this shape in a 6x6 for Australian Army evaluation when they were looking to replace the International. They ended up going with Unimogs and Macks

Yes okay mate. They were a good engine but nothing against a turbocharged Mack or unimog I wouldn’t think. And they are heavy too the Leyland trucks. I’d say that’s why but I may be wrong

What ever happened to basic trucks. Jim from Connecticut. The epa ruined the beautiful basic trucks in the states. They were easy to work on and fix. Now like everything else the government gets involved with, all their regulations makes everything expensive and more involved. I love to see the older trucks at work. BTW my grandfather used to burn everything. My dad used to burn our leaves in the fall. Now you cant burn anything. Our ass hole climate czar john Kerry has the world believing we are going to burn or freeze. But they can blow up nordstream 2 pipeline emitting tons of methane. Hi Jim. They are a thing of the past mate. They worked great. By all means update the cab and make it more comfortable but the drivetrain worked fine how it was. We don’t need exhaust burners or adblue. Just ridiculous. Same goes for burning the piles like you say. Only certain areas here can do it too. Thee greenies don’t like burning the bush. They don’t realise that the bush needs burning so it can thrive. The Australian bush anyway. It sounds like these blokes are all over the world and in charge mate.
