Ойын-сауық

Baxter and Jonathan talk about the never ending battle for Tone, but does it always have to come with a louder volume level?

    Back in 1991, I bought a Marshall JCM 900 100 watt head, and a 1960 angled cab. And my parents went away on holiday, I thought it would be a good idea to turn it up to 8 on the volume. I never did it again! My cat ran out of the house, my parents glasses in their drinks cabinet all fell over, and a lot of other stuff fell over. It took about 10 seconds on the guitar, of me trying to be Jimi Hendrix by getting great feedback, then ages clearing up the mess!

    I'm getting used to the silent and quiet stages now. I've been missing the stage volume so I started another band. We're not going to have computers we're going to have stage volume coming out into the house. I bought a Marshall half stack for this band.

    There is that tone that you can only get with sheer stage volume. Listen to a studio track then listen to the live version. Its a screamin, wide open sound they just cant/dont achieve in the studio.

    I had a gig last Sunday were I turned down the reverb (it had the settings for the Sat Band) that really did not work for me. As for volume, I have my Princeton at 4 and it's plenty loud. Also remember the hall sounds different with a few people than a full house or if you have a low stage with people dancing in front of you. In other words there are variables. Love the show.

    How many of us have hearing damage we don't realize and don't know what our "tone" really sounds like? Answer: A lot of us. I ask this question to "audiophiles" and they typically get angry.

    Call one's hearing into question and watch. "Audiophiles" are all wine-snobs that think their ears and their music appreciation is better than everyone else's. Many have damaged their hearing and don't realize it, believing falsely that listening to "pure" music at loud volumes doesn't hurt your hearing.@browneye6969

    Back in my home town, the bar I used to hang out in has bands a few steps downstairs, maybe 60' from the front door. When some bands play there, you will NOT have a conversation without shouting if you are in that lower area. I never heard complaints about volume. And all bands I saw there were using amps, usually mic'd The sound guy walks through the bar with an iPad to adjust the sound. I miss that place.

    I found a compromise in a Captor X for live purpose. Staged down one step of power which really isn't all that much, take your time with setting up the appropriate cabinet IR, and you get your pushed amp live at a reasonable volume with the line out to the front of house and everyone's happy. The harsh reality to live sound is that when everyone plays at a lower volume, the mix sounds way better. No one wants to do that though, because it's not fun.

    Dr Z has post phase inverter master volume that keeps your tone the same as a cranked amp while you can lower the output volume. Problem solved. For modelers, always bring a flat response full range speaker that can cover if there is no PA. Ignore the amp snobs and do you

    Do I need a Fender 65 PRRI when I live in a condo? Absolutely not. But my reasoning was I can buy what sound I love or I can spend more money trying to get there instead of just buying what I wanted in the first place. I wish it had a master volume, but like Baxter said in that one old video, sometimes the gear we love has things about it we don’t like. But maybe, just maybe, some of the magic comes from that thing we don’t like. Would a Princeton Tone Master make more sense for me? Yes. But I already have a pink paisley acoustasonic tele. I don’t need two fender products that have planned obsolescence built in.

  • @metalmover
    @metalmoverАй бұрын

    Most important piece of gear is not a guitar or an amp…it’s a place to practice at full volume. You learn to tame that sound level (with friends) and you become a band. In the early 90s, we had a lockout studio unit that separated us from other bands. Today I own a machine shop and the band plays here loud as we want 3-4 days a week. Concerning gigs wanting you to be quiet….DONT PLAY THEM (that’s for boy’s with modelers). Attenuators also are an option that should not be ignored. I stood in line in the late 90s to buy that red bean pos 2.0. Ever since then, people have been discussing how to make a unit sound more like a tube amp, and honestly, it’s a high end fizz that is present til this day one every “modeler” I’ve owned….and I’ve owned every one since the late 90s (gear nerd).

    Good trick is to put the amps on the side of the stage facing across the stage. That way you can get the sound you want but won't blow the audience up. Plus you don't have to pump anything but vocals through the monitors. And the drummer can hear everyone.

  • @benlogan430

    Volume is really important I do believe. Whenever I go out and play the only bands that people pay attention to are the loud bands. Or louder bands. Tone (line 6 spider on insane) seems to be irrelevant to the audience. Now loud and songs the crowd likes and then Kazam you good. But the club owner will be pissed.

    Loud doesn’t necessarily mean sounds good. We all think that we sound great, so why not turn it up because more is more😅 But often it’s just a loud, hot, mess from the audience’s perspective. And if they are in a place that is meant for imbibing and conversation no one wants to read lips to communicate and go deaf in the process. Got to know your audience and your venue.

    The Tone Master Pro and Fender FR-10 is all you need. Can even run your mic through it.......... If you are using modelers and it sounds like trash, then you need to learn how to use modelers and how to dial them in when setting up at a venue. Once you know how, you can get so close that the average person cannot tell the difference. You have to be tech savvy with a producers ear to pull it off at a high level.

    The audience doesn't care about your tone as long as it doesn't suck. The bar staff doesn't want to go hoarse shouting at customers and not being able to hear orders. Keep the volume down. Put on a good show regardless. That said, I'd rather play through a nice amp but if you want to gig in small rooms, direct/models and IEMs are expected/required.

    @nathantardrew7068Ай бұрын

    Volumes gotta be loud enough to keep up with the drums. Unfortunately, too many guys show half stacks, playing with poor dynamics, causing problems at venues. A lot can be done to mitigate volume complaints with speaker/cab swaps, amp placement, good EQ, and a good stage mix etc. Often "too loud" is actually too bright, or too much bass creating a muddy wall of sound, or the bass player is too quiet allowing guitar to dominate the mix, or maybe you are playing at 10/10 with no dynamic range, or you pointed your amp directly at the sound guys head and he thinks you are louder than you actually are, you brought the wrong amp for the gig and have too much power on tap etc Volume and headroom is a nuanced thing, and too little can cause problems too. The idea some people have these days, that even a Deluxe is too much for most rooms is ridiculous. Some seem to have concluded guitarists need to play at super low volumes, ceding control of their dynamics so some sound guy (who may or may not have a clue) can give it back in a subpar foldback mix has got to go. That's a huge overcorrection. A buddy I play with uses a modeler. He's still schlepping around an FRFR cab so he's got enough volume to fit into a band mix. Bottom line, playing well with a group is a skill set you need to develop. Know your gear, know your band's mix, work on listening skills, and be prepared to make adjustments when necessary, regardless of what gear you are using.
