Brand-ism and anti-brandism are both silly, find stuff that is well-made and appeals to you aesthetically within your budget, regardless of what's on the headstock...my personal favorite is the vox teardrop so fender and gibson are just side pieces on my roster anyway

PRS and Gibson's price points command such a big leap of faith that it attracts people that will go the fanboy route. Haters are so strong because the group that doesn't want to make that leap (or have made the leap and were disappointed $😬🔥$) are going to grow at a bigger rate than those that have.

I love PRS, and I also love Fender and Gibson too. I don’t think I could tie myself to one brand exclusively. I own one from each brand (though Fender will soon move up to two once my custom shop arrives, thanks to you fine people) and they all get play time as they give me something different. Sure, there will usually be one that gets more use than the others, but even that fluctuates over time as my mood or needs change. I guess I just want all the guitars.

Fender for me! Guilty as charged! I have been at it for quite a while, and a Strat with a Princeton Reverb works so well for me personally. In another note, I think most guitars can go from good to great with a good set up from a Luthier. I will say, the best quality guitar out of the box I’ve had is an EBMM. I recently bought two Taylor's and a PRS when updating my guitars. Nothing to do with being a fan boy of either brand, I considered them to be a wise purchasing decision. Both brands are easy to get hold of, reasonably priced (for what you get) and excellent quality. The QC and consistency is much better than on some other brands and they are run by guitar nerds (unlike some big name brands). I'm pleased with my purchases and especially the support I got from Taylor. Many of Taylor's accessories are excellent quality too so they won me over. My PRS is also excellent and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another guitar from them, maybe not an acoustic though. Who knows which brand will win me over in the future. I used to like Ovation and Takamine, now not so much. I was a big fan of Martin but while I think they still make some of the world's best acoustic guitars what they are putting out in my price range doesn't quite do it for what I want.

It also has a very comfortable neck, finger board and feel of a Fender bass.

@@itslikethesamebutdifferent8020 So true! The whole stigma of “you only play Queen songs in a Queen tribute band” is so wildly false because it’s a really, really versatile guitar. You can do funk, classic rock, Shoegaze, r&b, hard rock… hell, I don’t play metal but I know of people who play metal on a BMG! I got the Special first, but then I got an Arielle. The fit and finish on my Special is better, but the Arielle is my new favorite. It’s got all of the Red Special DNA (including the short scale), but it’s way more ergonomic: modern c neck with 0.82” neck depth at the first fret, smaller body (which I appreciate since I’m 5’3” and the Special swallows my entire torso up to my armpit) and the tone and volume knobs swapped so the volume is closer. Now I use my Special for drop D tuning. 😊

You know for years I could not figure out the PRS fans. Like I'm sorry but they've just never done it for me. And here's the ironic thing. I stumbled across a PRS model while looking for something with a piezo. The Hollow Body II in Peacock Blue. Such an odd ball guitar for them for sure. And yet the dang thing has become my primary live guitar. And true to its odd nature I use it in an odd way in a rock outfit with two female singers with classical backgrounds doing our version of old school rock meets modern. Still to this day not found a single PRS that I like outside of this particular guitar. Still get crap from PRS players on not liking them yet playing such an odd guitar. I mean if I was going to be a fan boy for anything it would be to my two different Variax guitars although the PRS was purchased to play live so they can stay home now that Yamaha has stopped making them. Sad days there

Over the years as a TV/Film (de)composer I’ve wound up with guitars with very specific sounds. (Yes, I toured with bands for many moons). Therefore, I’ve got some of what you spoke of. But, I think the elephant in the room is what the “sub” brands of the “Majors” are turning out that have really remarkable sounds and build quality. (I’m talking from the $1k area and below) The three most stunning I’m not afraid to take into a bar gig are: The DGT SE, the Epi Bonamassa SG Custom (it was an open case discount from GC) and the one that probably surprised me the most is the Squire Paranormal Nashville Strat. (It was a blemish unit that had been sent back to factory and assigned a new serial #. ) I like to look at that crazy high dollar stuff but, I need tools to werk with, not something I’m gonna freak out about if it gets a scratch.

Yes, I have known this since I was a teenager. I started with a LP copy and then a Gibson LP. I started jamming with buddies that had Fender strats and Teles and upon swapping guitars, holding, and playing their Fenders, I felt like, This is a downgrade. haha However, years later I have come to love and own fender strats and teles. But Gibson is still a superior instrument. Leo was a utilitarian manufacturer and it shows in the design and manufacturing of his guitars. This being said, they are great instruments.

I do agree but I think it's also because each Gibson is unique, which is uncommon today. Gibson still uses hand work for a lot of their manufacturing, including shaping the neck. So most other brands have a cookie cutter one size fits all approach, and that consistency can be very desirable because you always know what you should be getting. But each Gibson is different, sometimes a little different, sometimes a lot. You may have to go through a few of them to find the one that you personally connect with, but when you do it's a much more personal experience.

As an acoustic player I have been very fortunate to have owned guitars made by Collings, Gibson, Goodall, Martin, National, Taylor, and Webber among others. I just bought my first Guild acoustic guitar and for acoustic guitars I might go exclusively with them because of my budget (the Chinese made models, of course). If I had a bigger guitar budget, I'd go with Martin. The Guild 100 models are solid wood and most of them are around $1000 and below and you can't beat that. They have a great tone to them and are very well built.

I am a PRS Guy thru and thru - being from Maryland living close to the factory - knowing most of the 450 employees that work there and having many convos with Paul smith and Paul miles, Bryan ewald and the like I can tell you that the reason I love prs is probably the same reason people loved fender back in the day ….. they got to talk to the guy that made their guitars … everyone there LOVES and breathes guitar building. And every single one I have gets used every single show … Now with that being said …. I have a guitar vault … I carry about 9/12 guitars with me on any given run … 6 or 7 are PRS guitars in various tunings and specs …. But sometimes I need a strat … sometimes I need a tele …. Sometimes I need an SG with P90s … sometimes the songs dictate something I need that outweighs the guitar that I’m the most comfortable on …. But I’ve found as long as I love my guitars and the way they play when I buy them and I set them up to my specs … it’s all good … my HOME BASE is prs …. But I have many of other guitars I can use and don’t feel dirty about it if for 2 songs in my set I need my strat 😎🤘🏻 all love .. and Paul will tell you that too … he LOVES all the old guitars .. and never gives us shit if I have to diverge from the prs flag for a specific tone … partly cuz I think that confidence in knowing that I’ll always need and come back to my prss … it’s part of my sound and my records at this point to the point where if I don’t play a prs in the studio … people that arnt me can tell 🤣

I'm a Fender/Taylor guy, but I have to admit that PRS top to bottom are incredibly impressive and I'd love to have about a dozen of them. Naturally, the only PRS I own is a Silver Sky SE! I grew up loving Gibson, until I had a chance to gig with a Les Paul. My hands just don't agree with that guitar, marvelous as it is. I'd love to get a Firebird, but if it came down to it there's no way I would buy one over a Rivera amp, finally getting a Rickenbacker or a custom shop Strat.

So true. I had the privilege of taking a MM factory tour in ‘98 and played a prototype Axis Sport developed by Sterling that wasn’t your typical Axis: no maple top or Floyd, gray metallic, black pearloid p/g, black MM90s (P90), and that neck! - I was hooked! Great for smaller hands. 36 yrs later, I have the aforementioned Sport, (still my main gtr) an Axis Super Sport, Mariposa, 2 Valentines, one is Sterling brand w/ F hole, and a MM SLO Sterling bass as well. Also have my eye on a St. Vincent. And the last two bassists I’ve played with: only MusicMan. You either love them or you don’t.

@@cgoebbert I hear ya there buddy. I'm not in a position to spend thousands on ANY guitar. Regardless of brand. I've got a couple Sterlings myself currently. Scored the Cutlass CT50 HSS in firemist silver when they first released as a mod platform. Not gonna get into details, but let's just say it's become something extraordinary. So you know how it goes? Your cruising around on the internet, and up pops a Stingray ray34 B-stock in the same bitch'n color for $749! Had to have it. Just that simple. I'm not try'n to toot my own horn here. But these are 2 outstanding guitars for minimal outlay. They look and play as good as anything around. When I've got them sitting together, and I'm just catching a glimpse from across the room. It's hard not to crack a smile at least. Firemist silver is the perfect contrast to the roasted maple. Exquisite!

That said, my fav new one is the Indonesian made Sterling Valentine w/ the F hole. Under $1k, plays and sounds great to me and it stays in tune. Totally recommend it if you’re ever looking for a light guitar w/ the MM neck, SH p/u combo, 3-way switch, and a volume knob push-push boost. Fun for all ages😎 🎸

@@cgoebbert Never gonna be my style. One Sterling HSS pretty much covers everything I need from an S type. It's got all kinds of custom mods done to it that make it super versatile. Literally every electronic component has been upgraded. When the TB-14 bridge pickup is coilsplit in position 2, it's using the SSL-6 singlecoil neck pickup together, which gets some honest Tele tones. It's crazy how good it works with the treble bleed curcuit, which allows the volume to be infinitely adjustable without losing any high frequencies. 7 different switch positions that give unique tones. And every one is actually usable now.

I do think there is a utilitarian aspect to PRS fan-boi-ism. I bought my 92 c24 used, sight unseen (is Daddy's Junky Music even still around?) and it was perfect. Didn't have time to try lots of guitars out so that was nice. OTOH as an engineer who got the chance to work on the iPod, I do think Steve Jobs and Mr. Smith share a tendency to over-engineer/over-innovate at times. heh. Not a terrible thing but I got rid of the rotary pickup switch on my c24 as soon as the factory came out with the 3-way wiring kit and I wouldn't miss those winged tuners for one second if i could get rid of them without hacking up the headstock. That HFS humbucker is also an acquired taste I'd say, although I do seem to have acquired it ...

This is a hard one. I feel like a lot Gibson fanboys are collectors and are not necessarily playing their guitars because at a certain point it's almost too expensive to play. I think Fender fanboys exist, but it's hard to say if it's being a fanboy or loving the utilitarian design, and I say that as someone who doesn't love Fender. I think PRS are some of the most divisive because like John, my observation is people LOVE them or HATE them with not a lot of in-between. Personally I would probably say Ibanez or Reverend because I think I see people who are all in on those brands the most. I would say it's true Martin has fan boys, but I think that's true for some of the boutique acoustic guitar brands too. With Gibson I always think of Philip Mcknight explaining that they hold value in a stupid way. You could try to sell it used and the guitar has the Gibson logo on the headstock upside down and the buyer will just be like, "Heh yeah, they'll do that."
