KYB or Sachs tend to be good but there are many other decent brands out there too

Hi, I'm hoping you can help. So I started this job on an identical vehicle, all is off apart from 1 bolt on the top of the shock absorber, it's just spinning the bolt along with the Shock Absorber threaded part. I've tried getting a socket onto the bottom side of the strut top mounting as it looks like it's a hex end, but cannot get anything on, also tried mole grips etc but no avail. Do you have any suggestions or any go-to's for this? I'm reluctantly going to have to drill the bolt through I think.

Drilling through the spindle is an option, you can also cut the shaft itself with a grinder then stick it in a vice. You can also grind a flat on each side of the shock absorber insert so that the mole grips can't slip off that works really well The trick really is to clean the thread at the too really really well, it's generally dirt and dust getting bound up in the threads that makes it get stuck, you get the exact same issue with balljoint and such

Thanks for the comment, I’m afraid it was so long ago I don’t remember but generally speaking most of them are 21mm

High! Great video. I just wondered if the tracking needs checked after this is completed.

hi im just woundering going to do this job on same car you. you use a spanner and a hex to take the housing of the spring by spinning the hex. does it need to be done that way for a reason or can i just use a impact on it cheers

Yeah just use an impact, you may need to counter hold the hydraulic insert if it starts to spin

Thanks for this. Autodoc video mentions a "special shock absorber socket". What the hell is that?

Yes you can buy special tools to make removing the strut mount nut more easily but you don’t absolutely need it

I guess at the time I thought so but you could also remove the balljoint the knuckle with a spanner on the big pin nut If you can do it without removing it then I’d be interested to know how you get on - the reason I disconnect it is because the bushes on these arms are known to fail sometimes and I don’t like to articulate them if I can help it

If you took caliper off and dislocated the steering arm you wouldn't neet to remove the hub
