The maximum torque is at 1500 rpm! You can drive well between 1200 and 2000 rpm!

It was made on 100km section of road with normal speeds (up to 100km/h), similar to those on video. On highway (mostly 160 km/h) on ~1300km section (poland -> croatia) I've made around 5,9-6.0/100. In my opinion, this mild hybrid adds almost nothing to a fuel economy.

One of the car reviewers in Polad was able to achieve 3.7l/100km combined. Imagine that :) but the car was to never go over 80kmh

@@janiepaniemaju Actually it's not about the fuel conaumption, it has to make the components cooperating with the engine more simple, the electric motor is there instead of starter+alternator+something else, don't remember, but anyway, achieving 4l/100km is really impressive in petrol engine, it's less than 2 0TDI 150HP.

@@janiepaniemaju I can't believe I haven't seen ur reply 6 months ago! Weird! But better late than never I guess! You said it yourself 130 vs 150 PS that's a 15% difference in power and generally speaking getting 4.4/100 from a petrol for driving in relatively low speeds (he averaged 49km/h) is quite impressive. I mean If his average speed was sth around 80-90km/h that was still good but definitely not impressive. Not to mention that We're talking about a mild hybrid car here if it was a regular hybrid like toyota hybrids that would be totally different. Specially in lower speeds. What you got: 4.2 is great too but the route you took and your speed was not the same with what 1001Cars showed us here so can't quite compare. And for highway speeds I'm not sure if getting under 6/100 for driving above 140km/h is even possible! I think u made a mistake about that!

Sigue siendo definitivo un buen Diesel. Con mi 1.4 turbo Diesel consigo medias de 4,1 - 4,2 l/100 con bastante menos esfuerzo tecnológico y pudiendo hacer cambios a 3.000 rpm.

My MK7 1.4 TSI managed 58 mpg on a 603 mile run down to Engelberg in Switzerland from South East England. I was within 1km of the hotel when the low fuel warning light came on. I cruised at a leisurely 63 on the motorways and between 56 and 65 on the French A roads.

It's definitely an improvement over my mk6 1.4 tsi twin charger. Not bad.

I drive an Audi A3 40 TFSI quattro with a 2.0T with the 48V MHEV system. I just did a roundtrip 150km today for 2.5 hours and the car averaged 5.9L/100km. Amazing considering it is a 2.0L turbo with AWD.

Bigger engine is better when you are driving faster. I have 2.0TFSI in my Audi A6 and I get around 8.5l/100km when driving through Germany, about 700km. My friend with his BMW 530i 2007 drives the same route in 8l/100km And his is a 6 cylinder petrol engine with 273hp. In town my car consumes quite less.

Nice job! I think that in other type of roads with more traffic the consumption will be a bit higher, but still pretty nice!

As an owner of this car, the 150PS model, I got as low as 3.4L and as high as 9L in heavy traffic. My highway consumption at 90kph is around 5L and at least 6L from 120kph and beyond. A road long enough which can support speeds between 40kph and 80kph will give you the lowest figures. Keep in mind that the engine beyond 50kph does not switch off, its still working, its just that the battery charges while you drive.

@@1001cars Actually my results are precise because I derived them from my cars computer fuel consumption data. So far, I have not managed below 5L on the highway going above 90kph. My 90 to 120 fuel economy is not that far unless the distance travelled is enough to show a difference. If you are German with a highway thousands of kilometers, the difference 90 and 120 kph is going to be vast. If you are from a small nation like mine, Cyprus, to get to each major city from the center of the country, the largest distance is 100kph, so the difference is small to non-existent.

I can easily get 3.5-3.7L/100km in same conditions. With my 13 years old Prius. Cheers.

@@petrosfesatidis1288 it does, actually.... Top speed is slightly lower (which is quite irrelevant unless you live in germany), acceleration 0-100kmh takes 9 sec. In both cars, both cars fit 5 people with the carina having more luggage space since its an estate, and i dont know why the tank capacity would be relevant for fuel consumption. However i know the carina has a proper 2l 4 cyl engine which is reliable and cheap to maintain, unlike this golf. Yeah i know it misses safety and comfort features but imo those are not an argument to accept these foolishly high consumption figures

Emission standards were alot lower 25yrs ago. In fact almost no standards bar a catalytic exhaust was an advanced feature. Any current advanced engine must trade fuel economy for emissions at urban/highway speeds

Comment is a bit long, but keep reading for a little reality check. Any technology that helps reduce emissions even a little bit is good for all of us in planet earth, then put that in a car that looks as good as the Golf and you’d think you have a winner… but let’s think twice. Manufacturers such as the VW group are starting to use the word Hybrid in their cars indiscriminately by just adding “mild”, but that’s confusing consumers into thinking they are really driving a hybrid vehicle. This is far from true. A so called “mild hybrid” is really just a regular car with greatly improved electric and start/stop systems, that will achieve probably at the most just a 10% decrease in fuel consumption over the equivalent non-mild-hybrid version of the same car. And don’t get me wrong, 10% is a good number, but considering how our planet needs urgent help, manufacturers should be doing much more and investing in tech that makes a bigger difference. Full hybrids can achieve a 40%-60% reduction in fuel consumption over the equivalent car. That’s a way better number! Now let’s analyze the video: It’s a country road and completely open, the driver is super smooth and hypermiling a lot! (check the changes in speed between 1:22 and 2:22). In such conditions, a “regular” car with the same small petrol engine would’ve probably achieved less than 5.0 l/100kms (I don’t want to mention diesels because although the MPG is great, the type of pollution they emit is more harmful). There is much emphasis on the “time with combustion engine switched off”, but even my 15 year-old Opel I used to have, and most “modern” cars, have a system to completely cut off fuel when coasting in gear. So like the video, when driving downhill, even if the engine is still turning, the car will consume no fuel at all! and you can do that for an hour if the road allows you to. I now drive a Toyota Corolla Hybrid. I know it’s not a sporty looking car, and not as fun to drive as a manual gearbox, however it’s the same fun as any other automatic gearbox and you’d be surprised of the standing acceleration of an electric motor… full torque available at 0 RPM. Over the last 15,000 real-world kms, I have averaged 3.7 l/100kms (64 US MPG) of mostly city driving, lots of stop lights, heavy traffic, carrying with the family and dog under multiple conditions. Average speed of 23 km/h and 64% in full electric mode (that’s 64% of the time the car is actually moving, that the gas engine is completely off). If I were to recreate the drive of the video, I would’ve probably gotten between 2.3-2.5 l/100kms (94-102 mpg). Now you’ll think that full hybrids cost much more than an equivalent car, but that’s not the case. If you consider how much VW invested in this technology (and how much it passed on to the price tag), why not go that extra step and focus on making cars that are much better for the environment, while looking as good as that Golf?

A lot is down to how the vehicle is driven These mild hybrids are as they say, mild. They are a low cost option instead of no hybrid at all (look at GTEs for more electric ones) 0 rpm coasting is useful on shallow descents where running the engine in gear, with fuel injectors off would slow the car down too much (too much drag). There are still times the car does this engine braking, showing 0l/100km and not coasting.. This saves on brake pads. Driving + programming makes a big difference.. I'd be interested to see what happens if the aircon is on high, whether that forces the engine to run, or it simply waits for times the engine is on to run the compressor.

Your videos are generally great! But I can't help but notice that the majority of this drive is on a downward gradient on, what looks like, a mountain road. A lot of the time the engine is either coasting or in 2 cylinder mode. I have an seat 1.5 petrol and from experience the cylinder deactivation only kicks in on a completely flat road or on a downward gradient with foot of the accelerator

The volkswagen's vehicle equipped DSG shows shifting position like S2 or S3 where car shift. But the video do not show it. Is it DSG right? or is the option that delete showing shifing position added ??? im really curios it.

Im not 100% sure, but I think when the car is in efficiency (E) mode then it doesn't show gears because its irrelevant to the regular driver. And when you shift the car into D, S or M then the car will show gears IMO

I know that the eTSI is made as simple as possible, but I reckon it'll still add some weight and complexity to the whole car, which might be annoying to the first owner (but warranty will cover it), but crucial to the second owner OR if you want to keep your car for a longer time - harder to diagnose issues and almost impossible to repair by an independent. Also, I would like to see how this engine off with coasting mode impacts the engine oil temps and reliability (you pair it with VW renowned start/stop and even on a trip like this I assume it never REALLY or very late gets upto operating temp.). All that technology to get 0,6-1L less consumption per 100km than the previous gen.. which is nothing compared to the depreciacion. Seems to me kinda pointless and too complicated. Either wait for a full on EV car or just buy the basic engine I'd say.

I much prefer these systems over the previous generation start-stop systems, a modern 3 phase motor bringing your engine to life effortlessly when needed, along with the electrification of all the ancillaries makes for a much better experience.

Awesome review, awesome roads! But the question is will the hybrid system helps in traffic?

I have 1.0 tsi good engine

The thing is.. my octavia with 1.5TSI averages 4.3-4.8 with driving like this, no mild hybrid, manual trans, 100 octane fuel. I think the 48V system ads almost nothing. maybe 5% savings at best - assuming you're in coast friendly scenarios.

I have almost the same result with my fabia 1.4

The computer does not show it because the battery is really small (less than 1 kWh). It is mild hybrid, not hybrid or plug-in hybrid where status of the battery (difference between the start and finish) influences the fuel consumption

Jeśli decydujesz się na TSI z DSG Mild Hybrid masz "w cenie". Nie możesz wybrać wersji bez Mild Hybrid, no chyba że z manualem. Różnicy w wysokości nie było, więc nie można powiedzieć że "było z górki" - wróciłem w to samo miejsce. Prędkość była dopasowana do ograniczeń i krzywizny drogi (za wyjątkiem dwóch momentów gdy sprawdzałem jak długo mogę jechać z wyłączonym silnikiem). Mild Hybrid nie pozwala na jazdę z napędem elektrycznym. Umożliwia wyłączenie silnika podczas jazdy, pewną pomoc podczas przyspieszania czy szybsze i bardziej komfortowe włączanie silnika. To nie jest hybryda, o jakiej najpewniej myślisz. Bardzo dużo aut obecnie ma Mild Hybrid, bo jest to bardzo tanie i lekkie rozwiązanie, a jednocześnie nie wymaga dużych zmian w konstrukcji napędu.

I do not understand your question. In the third sentence you wrote the engine turns off when you release the gas pedal (it is correct, this is how it works and what you could see on the movie).

@@1001cars well maybe I interpret it wrong but ik looks like the car drives only on the battery, but that is not possible I think then. If the car is coasting it reduces speed, it cannot keep the existing speed with help of the battery right? nor it is possible to drive solely on the battery for a short time.

@@07randlnl Yes, you are right, with Mild Hybrid there is no chance to drive using electric engine, because this engine can only help combustion engine with acceleration and it starts the ICE more fluent. The rest - driving with ICE off - is possible because of the electric installation which gives enough power to all necessary equipment (like steering wheel). During such drive mode - coasting - still there is the chance to higher the speed, for example on downhill :D On flat road of course it is not possible because we do not have any power on wheels.

The 2.0TDi 150 is still going to run rings around it. Same engine in my Superb estate (190) regularly achieves 75mpg in a much bigger and heavier car. Commendable numbers for a petrol, though.

When you want to go forwards, these mild hybrids let you coast with the engine clutch open so the engines not rotating, and give a much nicer start-stop experience, plus I believe all off the ancillaries are electric so the a/c can keep running for a bit at the lights with he engine off.

The electric motor adds 50Nm, but only if the maximum allowed torque of 250 Nm isn't reached. That's because of the transmission (which can only bear 250Nm).

Yeah and in order to make it move you need to rev it while turnos on a daily basis you rev up to 3000 rpm. All reviewers say that the engines are weak and automatic gearbox is sluggish.

The extra wearing this will cause on the engine is astronomical

Perche' si ritorni ad un stesso punto non significa che il percorso nelle salite e discese sia lo stesso. A meno che tu non abbia ripercorso lo stesso tratto stradale a ritorno e io dal video non l'abbia visto. Se tu guidandola hai avuto questa percezione ok e ' come dici tu.

@@1001cars questo lo dici tu. La topografia delle strade mica e' stata studiata perche' sia simmetrica. SE io faccio un giro ad ANELLO di 30km da un altezza di 100metri salgo ripido facciamo 10km su 30km e arrivo a 500 m di altezza poi per scendere devo fare 20 km di pianura e discesa per tornare allo stesso posto. Questo perche' non e' detto che i 2 percorsi debbano essere simmetrici. Mi sembra di un estrema banalita'. Ripeto : siccome il video e' velocizzato puo' darsi che dal vivo l'effetto sia diverso e non si capisca bene.

great video, thanks. However, such a smooth ride is impossible in any city and I expect mild-hybrids all across the VW imperium to burn significantly more fuel in such conditions. Not to mention all the parts prone to failure in future - you have turbocharger, DSG, GPF and all that. I would rather sacrifice dynamics and top speed for reliability and fuel consumption and stick with rather primitive Toyota`s 1.8 hybrid with no gearbox, no turbo and no GPF. More powerful 2.0 hybrid is also an option, but it has GPF. Overall, this car makes no sense to me, its complexity is something I would be concerned with.

city drive is where this all comes into play good programming means the DSG, 48v motor and turbo engine all work together to make a smooth experience.

Well, I can coast my BMW at 150 km/h even in flat roads so...

If you want more MPG go manual :) It works 100%

Because it is does not turn the engine off every time then you left the gas pedal. It depends on the energy status in the battery. Mostly, not always.

Glad you made the video. This is terrible fuel economy. I expected at least 100mpg. I can get 73mpg out of a mk7 golf 1.2 tsi, easily get 62mpg. What are vw thinking?

Seems like too much tech, which will go wrong and cost thousands to fix

Now try with a real hybrid ( Toyota-Kia-Hyundai) you will see that mid hybrid doesn't make sense according with the extra price.

My Mazda RX8 also disables the injectors, brakes on the engine and basically runs 0L to 100km when i coast downhill. What a misleading video... Cars work like this since the early 2000's... Do us a favor and run the same route in reverse order, and show us how you achieve exactly the same average milage as you did now. I strongly doubt you can do that.

@@MrZiemwit This car have a consumption like a diesel. But only without the disadvantage of a diesel like the complex exhaust gas purification with a little bit of more CO2 output. But dont forget, that diesel have less taxes in compare to gasoline. Without that the diesel is not economically in every sense.

In my family we have a PHEV (Kia Niro), and a Diesel (Mk4 Focus 2.0 A8). Recently i had a Hybrid (it was Toyota C-HR). The PHEV is mostly used as an EV, but when i have to go far away with it and it's running out of electrons, it has a lot worse consumption than the diesel. My long term average is 5,6l/100km with the diesel (on 50%city, 30% motorways, 20% other roads), and i dont have to drive carefully for it. Driving it like on the video - averaging 50 on empty B roads - it can do the same consuption like this Golf does with ease. With the hybrids, i can barely go below 6, the moment i sold it, the C-hr had around 6,8l/100 if i remember correctly. Same routes, same conditions, same driver, same foot. Ok, my foot is a bit heavier than it should be, but still. With the PHEV (before my wife took it), i was managed to do 1,9l/100 consumption for 10.000 kmeters, but as i said, it is basicly used as an EV, it made only a few longer trips. As long you wont do longer trips than around 50kmeters / day, it is perfect. Yet, it's still less expensive to buy a cheaper diesel/petrol car and fill it a bit more often with petrol. The PHEV wont make the price difference in petrol. As far i see it now, my next car also will be a diesel. Im not totally convinced by this hybrid technology. Tried it, and it kinda failed. The're good in the city when you're driving like a grandma, but thats it. Here's my pro tip for you motorists out there: go pure EV with just enaugh range for your daily, or simply .. just go for a Diesel. They still very fuel efficient, and because of the low end torque, the're better to drive than the petrol cars.

Those were the speed limits on those roads. Motorway will be different. People who consider buying the car will decide is it suitable for them. It is not a race car.

With speed traps, cameras and live police etc it is impossible to drive fast on public roads. All sorts of traffic calming measures, roundabouts and speed restrictions limit the speed. Very often if you type destination in satellite navigation on free roads it says 60 min for 60 km. On motorways is 110/20 for 60 min depending from the speed limits. In the future I believe speed limits will be restricted with autonomous driving. Racers will probably go on the race circuit. Everywhere you go there are limits, bends, villages so 457 hp is pointless for real life driving but if someone wants to pay extra and pay penalty and does not care about money why not. OK speed is attractive, exciting and fun but there are ways to enjoy it without killing other people on the road. Rather do something solo so if you die do it with style and be nice corps not the one disfigured in pile of metal.

In Poland, Latvia or Belarus the VW IQ Drive ACC like in Passat or this MK8, useless, people in general who are using the more limited equipment car. Considering, the weather conditions in the arctic climate, the road conditions and the economic prosperity rather than in the UK and Germany or US but to a certain extent isn't it?
