Mitch is an authentic countertenor... that is why he can articulate high tessitura phrases with such ease! It’s Mitch’s emotional interpretations on everything he does that slay me!

It's so cool how much you know about music. Countertenor and tessitura phrases and all of that. Pretty great. I hope you are teaching this to someone.

I'm not even a huge fan of high voices but Mitch's voice really gets you in the guts and in the heart. It just draws so much feeling and emotion from the music. I love his voice and his hard work. I imagine there might be a few jealous angels out there.

Mitch is a counter tenor. He can be heard on some KZread videos singing a clear G#5. His range is listed as A1 to G#7. Hear his range here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/imiNzK-Emq_RipM.html Listen to him duplicate a grease pencil squeak on a binder while fooling around with Scott at 9:20. You said you love this song and have heard many versions, so I'm surprised you didn't even notice that Pentatonix is the only group to ever sing "We are all God's children" in English. Everyone else sings it in Italian.

The general rule of thumb when pausing is to back it up about 10 seconds before restarting. That way you get the full effect of the notes and don’t break them apart. If that makes sense.

Mitch missed getting to walk across the stage to receive his High School diploma because he was on a flight to LA to meet up with Scott and Kirstie, and meet Avi and Kevin for the first time...the day before they auditioned for The Sing Off. Which I'm sure you know they won. And the rest is history. Kirstie has one year of college at OU for a Music Theatre major. Scott was in California studying Pop Music at USC. Avi I believe had graduated and studied Opera. Kevin had just graduated from Yale in Pre Med with an emphasis in Eastern studies including a year in China, and speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese. So the trio don't have music degrees but were fortunate to have the high school choir director they had, and wonderful voice teachers along the way.

It's an interesting choice to have Scott go high with falsetto and Mitch go down/hold the base as a counter tenor...it's counter intuitive and a really good choice. (there towards the end after Kirstin and Mitch trading belts. around 10:12)

Have you heard Scott and Mitch as Superfruit? Not the early videos where they're fooling around - the professionally produced material from the album. They use that contrast in their voices to great effect. Try Goodbye from Lonely or Deny U.

I was amazed to read recently that it is not typical for the five members to even be at the same location when recording their music. Usually, they independently record their part and their sound people put the tracks together for the final production. Please review the new ABBA album, I’m 76 and have been waiting 40 years for this new record!

Well, I do know that Mitch was bullied in high school for having such a high voice (because bullies are also apparently idiots). I also know that his range is 6 octaves plus one note, not counting his whistle notes. Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch all grew up in Arlington, Texas. They were friends from about the age of 8. Scott and Kirstin were in the same class and Mitch was one year behind them. They were all members of choir and they formed a trio (imaginatively named "The Trio") that performed at school events - there are a few videos on KZread showing some of those performances. And I *believe* that Mitch and Kirstie both performed in some amateur musicals, but I'm not certain about that. Whatever they did they obviously had some good teachers involved. They were 19 in 2011 when they found Avi and Kevin to round out the group, named themselves Pentatonix (which really *was* imaginative), and went to L.A. to appear on The Sing-Off; those videos are all available on KZread. The way The Sing-Off worked was that each week they received an assignment for next week's show, giving them a week to come up with something, and during that week they had cameras following them around recording their process, much of which was shown on the show - that might give you more information about their training than I can come up with.

I enjoy Pentatonix videos but read that they typically record their parts individually, often in different locations and “mail it in” to be mixed into the actual recording. It seems that the pandemic has proved ANYONE can work form home!
