Hello Katie [ Singing Lessons with Katie Jean O'Brien ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). Hi Katie, I m a 73 year old senior citizen, musician. I’ve heard Nightwish 3 times in concert here in Maryland over the past 7 years. Floor is one of the best singers I’ve ever heard, and I’ve heard them all. she is so versatile. and has amazing stage presence. you’ll hear from Gabriel soon. One of my faves is Dead Boy’s Poem from a 2018 concert.

@@matthewarms3786 The Decades Tour was fire. I did see it too at the Lotto Arena Antwerp Belgium 2018. It was all about the "very" old songs and Floor and the whole band killed it. So Floor could sing the old songs. It was different than Tarja, but ooh so good imho. At that time i was 59 and had the time of my live🤘🤘💪

Don't be afraid to pause - we've likely heard the song a million times and want to enjoy watching you experience it for the first time. If I want to hear the whole thing in its entirety, I can always watch the original. Besides - pausing also helps deter the copyright demons from attacking your videos :)

Lovely reaction. I don't know what you did in your other videos, but your pauses were perfectly fine. I enjoy it when a reactor who knows about music and voice pauses to give their analysis of the performance - and you went back to listen again and keep the flow of the piece moving. @@KatieJeanOBrien When you do check out other Nightwish, be sure to find some earlier stuff with Tarja and Marko in the band. Floor is fantastic, but Tarja is excellent as well. I highly recommend finding the live version of Phantom of the Opera with Tarja and Marko.

She is most definitely classically trained. Welcome to the greatest band on earth. Every song is a masterclass on musicianship. She is a vocal technique nerd. Their rabbit hole is deep and wide. Enjoy!!

@@KatieJeanOBrien I totally agree. As long as you know what you're talking, it totally okay to pause and rewind as much as needed. Many knowledgeable reactors have videos between half and hour to full hour for this song alone because they pause and speak so much.

In my 62 years I have never heard a female vocalist that has moved me more than Floor Jansen. She can sing anything, from operatic highs to full metal growls - and she sings with all of her heart and soul. Her talent combined with the genius songwriting of Tuomas (the keyboard player, known as "the metal Mozart" and a master of emotion and melody) and the phenomenal musicianship of the rest of the band make Nightwish a one of a kind musical experience. They have many masterpieces and every song is unique and different, with lots of surprises.

And this is the 13th of 15 songs of this concert, Floor has been singing, belting, head banging and windmilling for an hour and 10 minutes before and 2 songs after. Welcome to Nightwish. Every song at this concert is very good.

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal and Nightwish, formed in 1996. The band is from Finland. 3rd and current lead singer ,Floor Jansen (Yan-sen) is Dutch. The mastermind behind it ,is the keyboard player, Tuomas Holopainen. He writes 90-95% of the songs, and they are all different Yes you heard an orchestra. The backing tracks were recorded with the London Philharmonic, and the Metro Voices and Young Musicians London choirs. Floor had only been with the band about 10 months at this show, having taken over mid tour. It was the first time many in that crowd of 82K had seen her with Nightwish. Also seen here, Emppu Vuorinen on guitar, Marko Hietala on bass, and Jukka Nevalainen on drums. This song, about an unrequited love, is from the 2004 5th album ,Once, with original lead singer Tarja(Tar-ya) Turunen. Song # 13 in a 15 song set. Wacken(Vah-ken) is a small town in northern Germany, their cattle region. Wacken Open Air has held a multi day metal festival every year since 1990 (minus pandemic years). The flaming bull's head is the venue's logo. Look for a comment from Gabriel Bardac (he'll be here soon). He will give you a short band history , and links to a lot of their songs. Every vocal coach I've seen react to her on KZread wants to put her on a pedestal for her technical ability alone. She's the gold standard when it comes to technical ability.

82k people there for the festival. Only 2k there normally! Towards the end of a 572 day tour which went to 34 countries. Floor had only been with the band, as a guest singer, for about 10 months! This is what happens when five "A" level musicians perform at the top of their game. This crowd was over 80k people in Wacken, Germany. Her name btw is Floor Jansen (pronounced Yahn-sen). The chief composer for the group is Tuomas Halipainen, the key board artist. A dive into Nightwish's and Floor's repertoire imo is well worth the time. They don't make bad music. Their music is best listened to live, IMO. Although their studio work and videos are also worth the watch. The band originates from Finland. Floor is Dutch and another member, Troy Donockley (not seen here) is from the UK. Enjoy the ride and brace for the "Army" of Nightwish fans who will respond to your post. Jukka (the drummer here) captivates me just as much as Floor does. I've never before seen a drummer that is so fun to watch. He puts so much work into every little (and big) movement. He's amazing and I really miss him. And Marko too! Anyone can play bass, but not many can sing like Marko does. Katie, be sure to find some songs where Marko sings. I'm sure several have been pointed out to you already.

Get on the Nightwish express. It takes you away. You don’t know where they’ll take you but you know it going to be friggin’ epic. Wacken 2013 starring Nightwish and co-starring the 80,000 is..wow!! The energy this band always creates with their crowd connection is incredible!! Sensory overload….and Floorgasms..NW style!!

I really enjoyed this reaction/analysis. I love it when somebody who knows what they’re talking about geeks out over an artist of this caliber and shows they’re genuine enthusiasm for it. Like others have said previously, this is a very deep rabbit hole and you’re going to find a LOT of amazing things down here. Not just vocals, but as you caught on in your commentary, composition, arrangement, performance, crown reaction… the whole package is here. Nightwish is one of the few bands that truly excels in all aspects of the art of making and performing music at a very high level. You’ve only uncovered the very tip of the iceberg, and believe it or not it actually gets better the deeper you dig. There’s a saying in the Nightwish fan community that your favorite Nightwish song is whichever one you just finished listening to, so hang on to your hat and enjoy the ride. It never ceases to amaze me: Whether singers, music producers, or others who play music...they ALL are amazed by Floor, and how good she really is. And no offense to my fellow Americans, but it also never ceases to amaze me when I see the reactions to Nightwish, and the thought or statement is, "Where has this been all my life?! Why have I never heard of this band before?!" It never ceases to put a smile on my face, seeing people truly experience a performance like this -- ESPECIALLY live, and what makes it even more amazing is, Nightwish headlined Wacken Open Air in 2013, and did it with a singer most fans hadn't even heard yet!

Also an important note for "The Poet and the Pendulum": Here you should know the background that led to this masterpiece.

Hey Katie, being gobsmacked when first seeing Floor and this as your initiation to Nightwish is totally normal! This is also known pretty much worldwide now as having Floorgasms when hearing her sing. And this was LIVE!!! The orchestral backing tracks are actual recordings from the (London I think?) Philharmonic Orchestra, plus what Tuomas (keyboard player) is doing himself. Over 80,000 at that concert. You will get MANY requests from this same concert. And on a side note: The bass player Marko has a phenomenal voice too, so if you want to check out some classics featuring him: Phantom of the Opera and High Hopes(End of an Era concert 2005), along with a number featuring him more recently too.

Oh, Marko, you are sorely missed. (Unfortunately he left the band although he was an absolutely integral part of it.) Imagine being so good that you send chills down the audience's spines with Floor right next to you on the stage. For a demonstration of what these two can do together, I strongly recommend Ever Dream and Ghost River from the same legendary 2013 Wacken concert.

This was song 13/15 in the setlist... Floor ❤

But the band has more to offer than Floor.With Tuomas (keyboarder) Nightwish has a composer and songwriter who is generally called 'Metal Mozart'. Nightwish is a band that you don't hear, but experience. In addition, Nightwish is a band that only really shows what they can do on a live stage. In addition, no song sounds like another and you always have to reckon with the unexpected. You know this excitement you felt after hearing it for the first time? It probably won't go away even after 200 more times (judging by myself) because the composition and performance of it is on mastery level. The fun part of hearing Nightwish is that no 2 songs are alike. You'll never hear them repeating styles since their brain (Tuomas, keyboards) oozes creativeness, which is met by talented bandmembers. All this sounds like a word-soup, but it'll be clearer after more pieces.

This is a sonic and visual masterpiece of metal. Nightwish aren't just a band. They're a spiritual journey. I cried when I first got to experience this masterpiece. Effortless comes naturally for Floor Jansen. Floor Jansen is a Valkyrie of symphonic metal. I love the way she engages her fans and joins them on the spiritual journey she takes them on.

The whole performance (15 songs, GLS was 13) is timeless. It is always great to see a reactor's first experience with Nightwish/Floor Jansen is GLS from this Festival. It was my first time too. LOL, you never forget your first time! I am 65 and am at heart a classic rock guy...Zep, Floyd, Who, Rush, Stones, etc. But after finding Nightwish, I just can't get enough of them. And Floor always brings me to tears, she could phart and I would probably shed a tear. There is something very special about Floor Jansen. I hope you do every song from this set, like and sub for you! Semper Fi 🤘🤘

Katie, bar the door! That Valkyrie that was singing is named Floor Jansen. And yes, she is....well, I am convinced she may actually be a Valkyrie. A lot of singers sing what they can...Floor sings whatever the hell she feels like...because she's her. She can sing like and angel and growl like a demon. Gabriel will be here...he has the List and the Lore, but you can't really go wrong. Floor has also done some solo covers on her own channel that are definitely worth a look. The version of Phantom of the Opera live at Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam is particularly astounding. And the goosebumps, we call that a Floorgasm. The Nightwish Army cometh, and that Right Soon!

Interviewer - What style of singing do you do? Floor - YES.

Floor is classically trained, but she mainly is a metal vocalist, but she can really sing what she wants. Others sing what they can, Floor sing what she wants. From growling to opera, she can sing EVERYTHING. I like to watch her belly, because you can see how she works with her muscles to support what she sings. Floor is THE BEST female vocalist EVER.

When the tittle of the video says "Voice Teacher Reacts" this is what i expect, several pauses giving opinions of how well Queen Floor does what she does the best that is pleasing us.. Nighwish and Her made the perfect union, they are the best, you keep doing the videos the way you see best and we´ll come back, feel no pressure for wanting us to like them, for me at least just the name Nightwish on tittle will make me come back, keep rocking and stay safe!

(Floor means flower in dutch) look her and nightwish up and i prommise you will be blown away every time because this was only the tip of the iceberg what she can do with her voice! Actually Floor is just a common Dutch name, simplified from Latin Flora or Florentius. ( meaning to blossom or bloem) not the Dutch word for flower which is bloem.

My favorite reaction to this song so far, and I've seen a couple hundred. New subscriber here. Please keep reacting to Nightwish. This concert was magical and epic.

Hello Katie! Just woke up and...what a great reaction, wow! A lot of song suggestions have already been left in the comments and if you don't mind I will leave another one. In 2005 NW performed "The Phantom of the Opera" with their first singer Tarja (Tarr-ya). In 2019 Floor (from Flora, Goddess of Flowers and Spring) participated in a Dutch music TV-series "Beste Zangers" (Best Singers) and performed in the duet episode The Phantom with Henk Poort (pron,. Poart), who for years was the Dutch Phantom (and A.L. Webber said the best), which was a phenomenal hit! When Floor asked him if he would like to sing it with her he said yes but on one condition...that he could sing it on stage with NW when they came to The Netherlands. Ofc Floor, and also the rest of the band, said YES! But then the pandemic hit and everything was postponed. But in Nov last year NW came to Amsterdam and after 17 years (their 2nd singer Annette didn't sing this) and to the great surprise of the audience they did The Phantom! They rehearsed it in silence so nobody would know! Promise made, promise kept! The links are in Gabriel Bardac's list if you want to react to this song and maybe a back to back reaction? Such a big crowd deserves the best and they got it. The song performed the best way thinkable, the ultimate unbeatable version. A recommendation is their second masterpiece Poet and the pendulum live at Wembley, delicate,intens,emotional,tears might drop, i promise you, you won't regret it.

Bear in mind they were over halfway through their performance. She had been singing for a while already. If you want your mind blown watch this whole concert. Her vocals defy the laws of acoustics.

Oh, Nightwish? Welcome welcome and greetings from Finland! Very nice reaction! There are always people who whine about pausing too much or too little. Just do your thing, do not care about those whiners and just do what feels the most natural for you. You can't please them all. "They have quite a following" - This show was part of a world tour which during 572 days reached 34 countries and over 1.5 million people attended the 104 concerts. That evening the audience was 82k. Not well known in the US, but in Europe and South America they are a huge band.

You've just had your first encounter with the Valkyrie goddess Floor Jansen, I've had the pleasure and privilege of hearing her do that live at Wembley Arena, I can tell you that no video or audio recording can do her voice justice

Welcome to the world of Floor Jansen. The crazy thing is even with all that she did in this performance, you have not heard half of what she can do. She has been with Nighwish since 2012 and you can listen to any performance from this Wacken 2013 show and you cannot miss, you might especially like the song Storytime. She was also in her own bands After Forever 1995-2009 and ReVamp 2009-2016, for After Forever I recommend Dreamflight Live ProgPower USA VIII (2007) and for ReVamp Disdain Live at Graspop (2010). She also participated in a Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers where singers perform for other singers, where she covered songs from Operetta, Pop, Musical, etc. Nightwish also just released a performance of Phantom Of The Opera from the Ziggo Dome. Just to name a few.

Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Nightwish and of course our 6 ft. tall Valkyrie Goddess..... Floor Jansen ( pronounced Yansen ). In most of our opinions, the greatest female vocalist alive. I am so excited for you to react/analyze more Floor and Nightwish! Please start with from the same 2013 Wacken concert, Storytime, Everdream, Romanticide, Song of Yourself, .... heck, the whole concert lol. ...... The backing tracks you hear are from the London Philharmonic Orchestra. From there every song you hear will seem impossibly better than the last. Other concerts etc etc ..... It is a rabbit hole and this bands talent is beyond compare. Floor is just a whole other level altogether when you start getting into her covers and solo career! You want to be blown away by her in a more intimate situation watch her Beste Zangers 2019 TV performances. Phantom of the Opera and Shallow, plus others. She is just sublime...... Floor is a very very well trained vocalist .this song was nr 15 of the show with 2 more to Come. Last summer she performed on a festival ( pinkpop) .first a 1.5 hour solo show and two hours later an almost 2 hour show with nightwish! There is no way you can do that if you do not take very good care of your voice. She can also growl so low that you feel the earth trembeling under your feet!😂 A vocal athleed and super kind Humble person.

For someone at the beginning who said "I'm not going to stop a lot". I was like oh, honey, there is no way you can do that for this song. I'm 60 years old, I am a die hard Rush fan, when I first heard this song, this performance, it was like the first time I ever heard Rush, but for different reasons. With Rush it was the time signatures changes and a progressive sound. With Nighwish, I have to give some credit to my Dad. He loved classical music and musicals, and Santana, I know weird. But this symphonic metal is absolutely outstanding and Floor's voice is so captivating you are just in awe!!! And to think she is the 3rd singer for this band. So, yes I'm old dude and a Nightwish fan!!!!

I love it when reactors look at the length of this song, and I'm thinking it's not long enough.

Thanks for a great reaction. I'm not usually in for voice teachers, but this was really interesting, yours was so different from many I've seen. Her voice and singing is really out of this world. She really is a match with Nightwish music, and this concert is one of the best concert's all time, any song from this concert is worth watching, but maybe Storytime is the one most will recommend. Hello I have some info on Floor Jansen for you here. She is married to Hannes Van Dahl, drummer of the Swedish power metal band Sabaton. Together they have a daughter. ( Freja ) Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 3 octaves (C3 to F6). Re-singing style ranges from opera to screams and grunts. She usually sings in English, in addition she has also sung songs in Dutch, German, Spanish, Finnish, Latin, Italian and Swedish. Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016. From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour. On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Awesome reaction. Your pauses were fine because they were to the point and well observed. I’m always interested to see what a trained singer such as yourself makes of Floor Jansen and you were obviously impressed! She was backed by musicians at the top of their game and a genius songwriter in Thuomas Holopainen. If you continue down this rabbit hole you have so much to look forward to. You have barely scratched the surface of what Floor can do vocally. Also there are so many different styles to their music that will surprise and amaze you. Let General Gabriel of the Nightwish army be your guide and you won’t go far wrong. Stick to live performances from 2013 onwards as that is where they shine. Great reaction video. I don't think i will ever grow tired of seeing knowledgeable experts hear this performance for the first time.

😂I think a lot of us (Nightwish fans) had a llittle ,inner laugh,when you said,"ooh ,they have quite a following",YES they have and you alway's gonna experience this in the comments,when the Nightwish "army" is coming to visit you on your channel.😄 This band and especcially Floor alway's make's people think what they "missed out of"and are impressed by their incredible musicianship.There is still a lot to discover about this band and also Floor as a singer. Nightwish were fortunate to have her, but then she was fortunate to have them too - the musical canvass they can paint for an expressive vocalist is second to none. That's the great thing about Floor - regardless how technically good she is, the story telling takes priority
