AJ's cover is second to none...I'm 58 and a HUGE Elvis fan, but perhaps due to my old age, i'm more partial to this melancholy version of ' suspicious minds ' more...I just never heard it done and interpret this way before. And imagine that, it took over 40 years for someone to come along, to have me like it done this way...Elvis is forever the ' King ', and our AJ is forever the' Queen '...Love your reaction..Cheers..

I've been an Elvis fan since I was aged 8 in the 50s. He was my first musical influence, but I was not affected emotionally in the same way Elvis did until I first heard Angelina on AGT at aged 13. Like many others, I've gone down the rabbit hole all the way back to her performances on NGT and forward to today. Like Elvis, Angelina is a once in a lifetime artist and I believe her future star will shine even brighter.

You're a youngster - lol. I'm 70 now but back in the 50s (I was a choir boy then), I used to try to copy Elvis and actually, for a kid, I did okay and I think I've seen every one of his movies. I still love his 68 and back music, though I'm not too fond of the Vegas stuff. One of his best songs is "If I Can Dream", his Martin Luther King tribute, is one I wish Angelina would do.

This is an awesome music video on many levels: her outfit echoing Elvis', her pianist (Rob Christie, Director of Republic Records' LA studio) dressed like Elvis' band members, the guitar, even her hair (styled like Priscilla Presley's), and the setting are all amazing. And her voice and arrangement truly makes it her own, conveying (to me, anyway) more emotion than the original ever did. Someone said this video is like a love letter from Angelina to Elvis. And don't forget: this remarkable performance is the work of a 16 year old!

Rob is one of LA's best piano accompanists (hence one of the world's best), especially for jazz stylings. I believe Angelina's team picked RR in part because of Rob. He was also previously the head of "A&R" (artists & repertoire), which in the recording industry means artist recruitment and development. AJ & Co. may have picked RR specifically so Angelina could be mentored by one of the best.

Thank you very much for a very beautiful and detailed analysis of our Angel. You are one of the very best at your craft. I attended her last concert here in Norway on July 10th and words just can't describe how incredible this girl is. I have been following her since she was 7, but I just wasn't ready for what I experienced that day. She needs to be experienced live on a soul to soul basis. Angelina actually turned 16,5 years old that very day😉. So she is still just 16 years old. Much love and respect from Norway 🇸🇯❤️🇺🇸🔥💯👍

My interpretation of the symbolism of this music video: First, and foremost; Angelina Jordan at 16 is the epitome of a Storytelling ARTIST, and she has the ability to take us by the hand and lead us down an imaginary path that we visualize as reality. The remarkable fact is that we experience this in each of her performances. In this video we see her as a married woman in her mid to late 20s. As AJ sings the phrase “Were caught in a trap, I can’t walk out” we see 3 small children, this to me is a marriage where the children come first. If it were AJ by herself, she would not stay in a relation without trust.

No loud band, no light show, no dancers, just two instruments to accompany the MAGIC that Angelina Jordan brings like no one else can. At 7 she was killing us, at 16 she is taking us places we have never been. What a glorious production, praise to everyone involved, so perfect for Angelina Jordan she rules the universe with her talent. Again, the great talent of Rob Christie playing the piano. The Cinemaphotography, a total MASTERPIECE, Excellent ART Cole McCarthy! Great touch, the cousins and sister get a cameo. Mery, you should be so proud, AJ's grandma produced this. (This red guitar is identical to the one Elvis played in his 1968 concert on TV.) Oh, the tears, and loss of breath, she is like no other in the universe. Here is a classic example of what this ethereal talent, Angelina Jordan, can achieve she takes a mundane song and turns it in to phenomenal classic. Angelina at 16 is the MASTER of her universe, she is top priority for both Stargate, and AJ's voice has been unique since she was 7 years old and now at 16, she controls us as an audience, leaving us hang on every word and phrase

Well said Valerie, that's exactly what she does, she inhabits & lives the song. A few years ago a reactor said he taught at the school in Oslo that Angelina attended from 4-12 yo. He wasn't there at the same time as Angelina, but he said that the voice teachers in the after school program in music & performing arts, didn't have kids mimic the original artist when they sang a song,. Rather they had the students study the lyrics first to get the meaning of the song, then to sing those lyrics with their own feelings. This started when she was in pre-K & I can't help but think that was the basis for the technique she has perfected over the years.

The song was written by Mark James. In the Wikipedia entry of the origins of the song, he is said to have remarked "That late one night, he was fooling around on his Fender guitar and using his Hammond organ pedals for a bass line and came up with what he thought was a catchy melody. At the time, he was married to his first wife but still had feelings for his childhood sweetheart, who was married back in Houston. James's wife had suspicions about his feelings. He felt it was a confusing time for him and that all three were "caught in this trap that they could not walk out of." Other singers covering this song invariably base their performance on that of Elvis, in that it is very "upbeat". Angelina took a very different path in that she read and understood the lyrics and what Mark James intended when writing them . To my mind, her rendition is much truer to the emotions of the song. The children appearing in the video were Angelina's cousins Aurora (first) and then Athena - daughters of her uncle Michael Astar, and then her sister Juliette. I would hazard a guess that they were included to emphasise that children are very important to Angelina and her family. Confession! I have never been a great fan of Elvis Presley, although I do like some of his earlier recordings, and I had never heard of the song "Suspicious minds" but knew that Angelina would completely take ownership of it, and she did. It was beautiful. After listening to it several times, I decided to download the lyrics to see whether she kept to the original structure. She didn't, and the song is all the better for it. For me, that she started with the Bridge of the song is very significant and, I feel, very indicative of Angelina's "up front" transparency. She was declaring that it was important that their love did not die, and then carries on to say why she feels as she does. Others first say how they feel and then, almost as an afterthought, assure their love they don't want it to end. For me, it is whether I feel the singer is genuine about the situation and wishes it could be resolved or whether the singer understands the situation but thinks the blame is on her/his partner but feels the need to assure them they don't want it to end (until somebody else comes along). I paste below the order in which Angelina sung the verses. "Suspicious minds" Angelina Jordan - lyrics rearranged. Oh let our love survive I'll dry the tears from your eyes Let's don't let a good thing die When honey, you know I've never lied to you We're caught in a trap I can't walk out Because I love you too much baby Why can't you see What you're doing to me When you don't believe a word I say? We can't go on together With suspicious minds And we can't build our dreams On suspicious minds So, if an old friend I know Stops by to say hello Would I still see suspicion in your eyes? Here we go again Asking where I've been You can't see these tears are real I'm crying (Yes, I'm crying) We can't go on together With suspicious minds And we can't build our dreams On suspicious minds Oh let our love survive I'll dry the tears from your eyes Let's don't let a good thing die When honey, you know I've never lied to you

Yeah! She’s something special, isn’t she? Pure Velvet Perfection! This vocal arrangement was all Angelina, I have no doubt in collaboration with a stellar team including Rob Christie & Mery Zamani her Grandmother. She is a Master Storyteller. The video is shot in the same Antique Store that she did 'My Funny Valentine' on Valentine’s Day. I believe it is in LA near her home. I believe the girls in the video represent Angelina's Journey from infancy to present through the classics of music history. Thus the Antique store, She grew up studying and performing these classics. Did you notice that right foot raise it''s heal to cradle the guitar a couple of times in the performance. I was waiting for her to throw in a little shake to it in homage to the King. Could that have been intentional? That is Rob Christie on piano. Sister Juliette and a couple of Uncle Michael's Babies. I think that makes them cousins not nieces. Full Black Leather Bodysuit, the guitar from his concert in 68 and the hair a homage to Priscilla Presley. Yeah! She can bring tears to your eyes. Epic. Incredible. There are no words. Epic! Wow, Wow, Wow! Could it be more Beautiful? ♥👣👸🏻🎷 Yeah she doing a Concert in Norway this month! Album to drop soon! So much to look forward to.♥👣👸🏻🎷

She does get inside the song and once she's in there she then reveals the beauty of the song. It seems to me that a lot of famous singers these days are all about the vocal technique and not about the song. Even though Angelina has a magnificent vocal instrument and genius technique on a song like this she puts all those assents at the disposal of the song. It's like you have to restrain the urge to show off yourself at the expense of the song. A lot of the greats of the past understood this. Their versions of certain songs became iconic because they put their voices on an equal level with the material they were singing. Think of Ray Charles on Georgia or Billie Holiday on God Bless The Child and Nat King Cole on Mona LIsa. It's this three-way combination of singer, song, and performance with the emphasis on the song that makes these artists' versions the definitive versions. Angelina seems to know how to put her ego in a box and let the beauty of the song shine through. Of course, that means you have to have great taste in choosing the best songs. I hope we have a lifetime of great work by Angelina.

Valery, After years of watching Angelina perform I have come to conclude that what separates Angelina from her peers is that she was endowed with highly developed intuition and instincts. Valerie, you continue to refine (distill?) your reaction commentaries as Angelina blossoms into fully-fledged adult artist before our eyes ... and what a wonderful process that's turning out to be! Yes, she has 'inhabited' the songs she has sung from a very early age and continues to do so ... how was that possible at 6, 7, 8 ... ? I hope at some stage she will create a full album of 'resurrected' greats from the past, in this jazz/blues style ... they are so much more than covers ... she re-invents the songs and presents them with all due reverance for the originals, but made current and dramatically re-interpreted. It's a rare skill, but fellow Norwegian songstress Aurora Aksnes does it too ... try her 'Life on Mars' cover if you haven't heard it. Must be something in the water in Norway! R (Australia)

Valerie, your observations are always spot on. I knew Angelina would be good in this (as she is in all of her songs), but there is that added richness to her tone, like a fine wine, that I was not expecting. And you are right about her phrasing. Every song she sings, even if it is a song she has sung before, sounds so different in her phrasing - she reminds me of the great Frank Sinatra. I could never sing along to one of his songs because I would always find myself hopelessly out of step. But that's ok...I can't sing along with Angelina because I am always so mesmerized anyway!

Thanks for reacting Valerie! This version is so so beautiful! I have been listening to it so much since she released it. The whole production, video, arrangement and music, all fit so neatly together. I love how she comes in strong with so many beautiful open vowels and how she uses the bridge to start and end the song. Her voice and the piano both sound so wonderfully clear. With the arrangement, the tempo, Rob killing it at the piano and her melancholy, the sadness of the lyrics and the story really jump out. Distrust is destroying love and she makes me feel it to the core :-) The visuals are so good as well. First she uncovers beautiful pieces from the past and the dust coming of the piano is wonderful. Her little cousins and her sister give me the impression of Angelina herself growing up. We have seen her perform since she was 7 and now 9 years later she is still improving. As her voice wont mature for another 9 years, we can expect a similar jump to happen. Also the Elvis’ imagery is wonderful: the rhinestone boots, the mic, the 1968 comeback guitar and leather suit, Rob Christie’s suit and of course her Priscilla hairdo. Just so delightful :-)

It's quite short, so you might want to pair it up with something else from there - for example, the extremely short "Leave the Door Open" (caption beginning with the hashtag "brunomarsmusic"), which features a very different "persona" than we are used to seeing from her.

Hi Valery - you have no idea - three days ago i was about 3m close to Angelina during the last concert in Norway and before she perfomed Suspicion Minds she begged the audience to be more thrustfull and kind to each other and this is her message in the song to dont do this mistakes - like distrusting everybody because only Bad things will come out of that - she is so kind and gentle - me i would really like to take care and protect her from the harshness live can be - by the way she sang a song "Himalaja" or something like this (dont know wheter it is the correct name) where she used her highest headvoice - i never heared her going that high before - you need to check this out cheers from Germany

Thank you for your reaction. Angelina is only 16. I always wonder about people's comments of how young Angelina is to perform this type of songs with such much emotion and feeling and how is she capable to do that. The question is how many of us that witness this greatness of Angelina, really know about her private life and what and how she experience things that happened in her life? People always mention the fact that her family protected and guided her ( and I used the word family) and fortunately we know that is true as we look at Angelina's singing career. We are so privileged to watch Angelina's performances.

Angelina Jordan‘s grandmother is the executive producer of this video. The young girls in the video are her cousins and the store is owned by a family member. Along with what your other viewers have said she’s also paying tribute by wearing blue suede boots which can be seen when she’s sitting on the loveseat. And apparently, the guitar was Elvis’ on loan to her for this video ♥️🇨🇦♥️

Absolutely what I expected. She made this her own song and she did it beautifully. I noticed Juliet sitting there she is going to be as beautiful as Angelina one day. Elvis' version is great and it always was, and it still is one of my favorites. but Angelina's version is equally great and is definitely her own. When I first heard this song I loved it and put it at #3 on my playlist (Angelina Jordan Playlist by Terry M.), about midday I moved it up to #1. The main thing that changed my mind was the power in her voice. I'm not talking about loudness I'm talking about the power she has regardless of how loud or soft she sings. This is a quality that I haven't heard from anyone in my 82 years. This voice has become so unique that it is totally unmatched. Her phrasing in the last bridge is great. And she got Elvis’s ‘Oh Yea’ at the end of the song. The pianist is Rob Christie (3 Grammys), he is the head of the Republic Record department that is responsible for Angelina and other singers. The two small kids are her uncle Mike's kids, and the older girl is Angelina's sister. 🙂

I have been following your critique of AJ they have been pretty spot on in my humble opinion. This is YOUR best video, Lighting,, make up or both. I wrote on AJ's comments that she is probably coming of teenage awareness and how she is reading it and is looking for more independence. Caught in a trap cousins and her sister looking at the wonders of her world Parents and others when an Old friend come over and needing more trust. I can imagine her picking this song for her own reasons of explanations words relate to her feelings.AJ does a version of I have nothing.. Her later version in this very studio she drops the key down to her very best spot ... You are quite a beautiful young lady your self. Like a song a little bit of contrast goes a long way. Lighting and make up are like a good riff in just the right spot..

I loved so much of what you said. about the many ways to use the voice and how Angelina can do it so well because she was able to get into the song and use all these different parts of her expression with the mic. Everything you said was interesting and true. The part i hope you give us in a part 2, (can one do a part 2 reaction?) would be how unique her version of this song is. You would need to watch Elvis' version of the song, which has been copied by many. Angelina, however, created a completely different song with pieces of the original song but nothing like it at all, really. I bet if you watch Elvis' you'll see what I mean. She strips songs totally to the bone and then tells the story, tells the truth of the story clear as can be. It is interesting to watch men react to her version of this song .. you can see that they get it .. get what it's about. Angelina, our Master storyteller, found a way to tell the story so that it is true, and clear. She is brilliant. Thanks so much ... I truly hope you do a part 2 reaction. I believe you'll have some valuable things to say. Thank you for your reactions .. I have always appreciated you - very much. Blessings to you. ❤

Although many reviewers have acknowledged her clothes, hairstyle, etc as a nod to Elvis, I haven't yet heard anyone point out that AJ's vocal technique (in a few carefully chosen parts) is an homage to the King as well. In some of the phrases in her lower register ... and in some of the places where she begins a vowel with an "h" ... I really hear echoes of Elvis vocal style.

Great reaction Valerie & spot on comments. Angie's allsang concer dropped her cover of “Bohemian Rhapsody” written by Queen kzread.info/dash/bejne/hqWB09t6mZDIo8Y.html Live concert 6-22-22. Allsang på Grensen 2022 Angie’s owned version. Angie's is (16). She put in a lot of Elvis references, really amazing the respect & homage she paid to Elvis. Angie really blew this one away. I love what she did with this story This was filmed in the same place that she did “My funny valentine” at Melrose Gallery and Antiques in West Hollywood CA. There's a picture of (age about 1-2) baby Lisa Marie Presley on a golden couch like Angie's cousin sat on with a white dress. There was one of Lisa also (when she’s about 3) with white dress & she had curls like Angie’s other cousin Athena had (from her uncle Michael's kids). Plus it acted as a double meaning for us watching Angie growing up. Her sister Juilette was the older one in the white dress like Angie was in, when she was 10-12 before she changed at 13 & her, her mom Sara & grandma Mery made clothes for her performances. (Angie made it modern & nostalgic at the same time. She’s emotes the story, for she is a true master story teller) The black jumpsuit & red guitar is for the welcome back tour in 1968. The hair was for Priscilla his wife, also Angie sitting on the couch. Chandeliers, mirrors & furniture was for Graceland, the Piano player Rob Christie wearing red like Elvis band members & you'll even see that Angie's (Elvis stance) put her leg out & bent like Elvis did. Angelina did a lot of homework & paid a lot of respect & gave us a lot of Easter eggs & there’s still more. As she usually does on her videos. Angelina is just amazing, beyond words & other singers/writers/artists/people. {She's Angelina Jordan Astar} The barefoot Angel with a 1000 voices. Angie's other 3 concerts dropped a lot of songs from her 7-1-22 Kurbadhagen, also 7-7-22 at Kongsberg & 7-10-22 at Kurbadhagen again. Angie's has fun & so does the fans. A lot of songs. Kathrine Angeltveit is a good channel to start from. Good recordings from her.

Yes, many symbolisms. The hairstyle is what Priscilla Presley wore. The black leather outfit and the red guitar are a tribute to what Elvis wore on his comeback tour. The piano starts as Angelina is removing the dusty cover (dusting old songs). Her baby cousin represents the innocence that we are all born with. Her other cousin running around and looking up represents the curiosity and bewilderment of discovering new things. Her sister Juliette looking regal sitting on an antique chair represents the hope and the dreams of what of what and where she wants to be (The Queen of Music on her Throne). And then Angelina as a 16 years old looking like a rock star as if she is saying: I arrived and I belong here with the best. These are my interpretations. Regardless, Angelina in my eyes is and has been a Superstar for a very long time. Thank you for your genuine reaction and analysis and I look forward to your next Angelina’s reaction video.

I very much like your interpretation of the young girls: Innocence; Curiosity & Discovery; and Hope & Dreams - very nice. However, about Angelina I’m not so sure … remember in the video as she comes into the antique store she also looks up and around as the first two younger girls do. To me, that’s not saying “I have arrived”… rather it’s an acknowledgement of “I’m still young (and know it), I’m curious and still searching, but I know my goal is to reach the stars.” Angelina has not peaked yet professionally or personally. She is like a beautiful flower just beginning to blossom; or a delicate and beautifully-hued butterfly opening and flexing its gossamer wings (notice how she always wears white and silver) before taking off into the sky. She has yet to soar to her full potential. I hope that the real angels will protect and guide her so that she can. It’s interesting that we each can see different things in the elements she uses in her video; they are all valid and noteworthy. Truly amazing … as she is and her performance … and I appreciated the thoughtful and informative comments regarding said heartfelt performance! Thank you.

The Hagstrom Red Guitar used in this video is a modern up to date copy of the one Elvis used in 1968. The Hagstrom Red Guitar belonged to musician Al Casey, a member of Elvis’ backing band during the special in 1968. According to an accompanying letter from Casey, he was asked to let Elvis use the guitar by the producers, as they "thought it would look beautiful on camera and with the set." Elvis Presley’s 1942 Martin D-18 acoustic guitar may have recently sold for $1.32 million, but fear not - another of the King’s axes, this one his cherry-red Hagstrom Viking II electric guitar, famous for its use in the legendary '68 Comeback Special, is hitting the block. The semi hollow instrument is a highlight of Kruse GWS Auctions’ Artifacts of Hollywood & Music auction, which begins on March 27. It's being offered with a starting bid of $250,000. By Matt Owen published March 31, 2021 Now, it has been confirmed that the legendary semi-hollow has been sold for a whopping $625,000, with the proud new owner of the lot managing to outbid six other plucky bidders to get their hands on the prized piece of music memorabilia.age credit: Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)
