That dude playing the piano is Rob Christie Republic Records Studio Director at Universal Music Group Manhattan Beach, California, and he has been working with AJ since she signed with the largest record company in the world at the age of 14, two years ago. Rob was the MC of AJ Christmas Show that aired Dec 23, of 21. AJ’s Christmas Show that live-streamed on Dec 23 of 21 had some of the most important musicians of our time: Frank Sinatra's drummer for 6 years, and sun in-law of the late Henry Mancini, Greg Field has won 9 Grammys, and the bass player, Chuck Berghofer who also played for Sinatra for 6 years accompanied AJ on her Christmas Show, and they stated that she had the "storytelling ability of the greats, Streisand, Fitzgerald, Vaughan, including Sinatra, to name a few. The main pianist, a five-time nominated for Grammys, Shelly Berg, stated in all his years working with the greatest vocalist, he had never encountered a talent like AJ. Did I forget to mention Jimmy Z, the famous Sax Player who worked with Rod Steward, Etta James, the Eurythmics, and Doctor Dre, was part of the band for the show? Jimmy stated that AJ was the best he has ever played for. Rob Christie Republic Records Studio Director at Universal Music Group Manhattan Beach, California played the guitar, and was the MC of the show. (I can't list the complete backgrounds on all the band members because it would take several pages to do them justice.) Angelina stated that she would rather perform than take a breath, and she has never been forced to perform, it has been her decision.

Once again Angelina has taken a classic song and made it into something new. She does this again and again with so many great songs from the past. She doesn't just cover a song, she re-imagines it with her own special interpretations. Her interpretations always seem to explain the message of a song in ways we never understood it before. It's incredible how she is able to do this.

Angelina really interpreted this song so well that it tells you how having a suspicious mind can destroy a good relationship. This is how I understood it from her singing. And it made me feel sad but at the same time it made me feel hopeful that maybe those who are listening to her can turn around and save their relationships. I just love Angelina’s arrangement, the simple piano background that it amplifies the crispness of her voice, the 360 degrees difference in melody that made you feel the angst or anguish even more. The song is superb, well delivered. It’s Angelina’s.

Whether the cute little girl or the stunning young woman Angelina Jordan immediately commands your attention. She then pulls you in with the first words she sings, or, in her younger days, with her smile. You start listening: if a cover she probably has slowed it down. You are now listening to each word, each sound, emanating from this extraordinary being. Vibrato, rasp, time, soft, whispered, spoken, low notes, belts are all at her disposal. In Suspicious Minds you hear the tremendous power in her voice, restrained and controlled. None of this would matter if the whole of these abilities, skills and techniques did not reach your heart/emotions. But they do. That is the Angelina magic: the ability to touch your heart. With exquisite beauty.

This beautiful take on Elvis is something we’ve never heard, but it’s classic Angelina. There’s a very strong opening phrase that grabs you immediately and hooks you for the full ride. Angelina slows it down, tells us a story, and makes us understand and feel every word of the lyrics. The nods to Elvis are not only visual, but there’s the respect for the original that we always hear. The simplicity of the delivery hides the beautiful symmetry: intro and outro with that haunting piano, with Angelina starting and ending with the same verse (sung completely differently each time). And Angelina really delivers the emotional impact in those lyrics. With Elvis, we’re in the groove and vibe of the upbeat music. With Angelina, the music is beautiful, but it’s there to enhance what we’re here for: Angelina’s amazing voice giving us a completely new way to understand and love the song.

Absolutely what I expected. She made this her own song and she did it beautifully. I noticed Juliet sitting there she is going to be as beautiful as Angelina one day. Elvis' version is great and it always was, and it still is one of my favorites. but Angelina's version is equally great and is definitely her own. When I first heard this song I loved it and put it at #3 on my playlist (Angelina Jordan Playlist by Terry M.), about midday I moved it up to #1. The main thing that changed my mind was the power in her voice. I'm not talking about loudness I'm talking about the power she has regardless of how loud or soft she sings. This is a quality that I haven't heard from anyone in my 82 years. This voice has become so unique that it is totally unmatched. Her phrasing in the last bridge is great. And she got Elvis’s ‘Oh Yea’ at the end of the song. The pianist is Rob Christie (3 Grammys), he is the head of the Republic Record department that is responsible for Angelina and other singers. The two small kids are her uncle Mike's kids, and the older girl is Angelina's sister. 🙂

Yes, it's a different song, but it's the same, yes, it's still that song, but somehow (in a way only Angelina can process) it's even more emotional, it's slower, yes, but it's closer to flowing of your soul. The song was written by Mark James. In the Wikipedia entry of the origins of the song, he is said to have remarked "That late one night, he was fooling around on his Fender guitar and using his Hammond organ pedals for a bass line and came up with what he thought was a catchy melody. At the time, he was married to his first wife but still had feelings for his childhood sweetheart, who was married back in Houston. James's wife had suspicions about his feelings. He felt it was a confusing time for him and that all three were "caught in this trap that they could not walk out of." Other singers covering this song invariably base their performance on that of Elvis, in that it is very "upbeat". Angelina took a very different path in that she read and understood the lyrics and what Mark James intended when writing them . To my mind, her rendition is much truer to the emotions of the song. The children appearing in the video were Angelina's cousins Aurora (first) and then Athena - daughters of her uncle Michael Astar, and then her sister Juliette. I would hazard a guess that they were included to emphasise that children are very important to Angelina and her family. Confession! I have never been a great fan of Elvis Presley, although I do like some of his earlier recordings, and I had never heard of the song "Suspicious minds" but knew that Angelina would completely take ownership of it, and she did. It was beautiful. After listening to it several times, I decided to download the lyrics to see whether she kept to the original structure. She didn't, and the song is all the better for it. For me, that she started with the Bridge of the song is very significant and, I feel, very indicative of Angelina's "up front" transparency. She was declaring that it was important that their love did not die, and then carries on to say why she feels as she does. Others first say how they feel and then, almost as an afterthought, assure their love they don't want it to end. For me, it is whether I feel the singer is genuine about the situation and wishes it could be resolved or whether the singer understands the situation but thinks the blame is on her/his partner but feels the need to assure them they don't want it to end (until somebody else comes along). I paste below the order in which Angelina sung the verses. "Suspicious minds" Angelina Jordan - lyrics rearranged. Oh let our love survive I'll dry the tears from your eyes Let's don't let a good thing die When honey, you know I've never lied to you We're caught in a trap I can't walk out Because I love you too much baby Why can't you see What you're doing to me When you don't believe a word I say? We can't go on together With suspicious minds And we can't build our dreams On suspicious minds So, if an old friend I know Stops by to say hello Would I still see suspicion in your eyes? Here we go again Asking where I've been You can't see these tears are real I'm crying (Yes, I'm crying) We can't go on together With suspicious minds And we can't build our dreams On suspicious minds Oh let our love survive I'll dry the tears from your eyes Let's don't let a good thing die When honey, you know I've never lied to you

Slowing down the song temp, the lyrics help tell Priscilla's side of the story during their marriage. Elvis's version was more rock & roll style, not depending on the song's lyrics. Most importantly, the tone of Angelina's voice is pure velvet and capture's your attention throughout the song.

@@badwaterb118 Jessica, I understand your comment but I think you missed the point here. You are right in that almost every channel gives the spiel of liking commenting and subscribing. The problem is many request it just for their own channel and the artist gets left behind. Artists like Angelina need a boost in their KZread analytics for increased exposure on KZread, and that involves us watching her original videos to the end, liking, sharing, commenting, andsubscribing to her official channels. That is in addition to what you may do for the reactor Channel. Just doing those things for the reactors video and channel alone does not help Angelina! You mentioned that we all know what to do but the reality is a large number of viewers do not know what to do or they don't do it. If fans are supporting the reactor Channel and original video but not those are the artist, that is not equitable and not fair to an artist that deserves the support. This applies to Angelina and all young aspiring artists. I hope you will support Angelina in this way and help remind reactors to do the same for her.

@@badwaterb118 I agree for those who are regulars on KZread it is tiresome. In reality, there are many new to KZread and many others who only use KZread once in awhile. When it comes to music reactions, a reminder to watch the original video is very helpful since the artist doesn't get any help to their analytics from us watching the reaction video. For all these reasons, sadly, it is necessary for content creators to make the pitch on each video.

Great, insightful commentary, Jennifer! About the meaning of the song in Angelina's version, she recently said in a concert she gave in Norway, that we should be kind to one another and that suspicion doesn't have to come between us. This says a lot about how Angelina always wanted to spread love and empathy which she has abundance of ♥

Thank you Jenn for reacting to this wonderful cover by our barefoot princess.! It's amazing how Angelina makes this cover so different from the original yet still stays true to the essence of the original song. Her innate ability to make the covers her very own are a true testament to her musical talent ! . If you've never heard this original song, you would think Angelina's was the original song. It's that different but so good. Jenn as always. I appreciate your honest expert vocal analysis and breakdown of Angelina's voice throughout this song. Angelina from the opening three or four lines is able to command your attention immediately and keep you enthralled in what she's going to sing throughout the song! I really like that Angelina maintained Elvis's legacy throughout using the red guitar, her leather jumpsuit and Priscilla's beehive hairdo ! If you get another chance to react to a cover I would suggest Angelina's cover of Whitney Houston's." I Have Nothing" singing live in concert and just recorded 3 weeks ago in Norway at Allsang pa Grensen 2022 concert ! I think it was a fabulous outdoor concert and Angelina delivered a magnificent performance of this iconic song at only 16 years of age ! I know you will enjoy it for sure ! Thank Jenn as always for your continued support of this young talented artist ! By the way you look fantastic and I'm glad you're constantly hydrating with lots of H2O lmao ! Hope the heatwave doesn't last much longer ! Keep a stiff upper lip lol and please stay healthy and safe ! You're the best ! 👍☺️🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️❤️

The arrangement sheds an entirely new light on the lyrics. We know from her charity work that Angelina has a global mindset. I believe she's taken this song about a damaged love affair and made it a metaphor for the issues facing nations. It's pure genius. Great reaction as always, Jen!

To me, it sounded like a 'hardening' of her conversational tone, in the way that people do when they are gearing up for a recurring argument that is unresolved. While her recent live performances of 'Suspicious Minds' in Norway were spectacular, they were not able to capture the forensic nuances that delight the listener's ears in this recording. Nice to see you back. Did you love all of Angie's nods to Elvis, also his wife Priscilla (hair) & daughter Lisa Marie & Angie growing up too. This was filmed in the same place that she did “My funny valentine” on 2-14-22 at Melrose Gallery and Antiques in West Hollywood CA. Check out more from Angie’s 3 concerts in Norway, (Please react to some of these) 7-1-22 in Kurbadhagen, 7-7-22 at Kongsberg & 7-10-22 again at Kurbadhagen. Angie had a lot of fun & so did the fans. (Mattias Axelsson, Vidar Enerud, Kathrine Angeltveit & Trond Andersen are good channels to start with. (They have some good recordings & video's) She even did a new cover called "Mt Everest" (which we felt was better than the original)

Thanks for this! I love your insightful technical analyses of her singing. You also give of a lot of happy and positive vibes which I love as well. Yeah her open vowels are so beautiful and even her humming she manages to make sound more open than most people manage with their mouth fully open. Perhaps ‘relaxed’ is a better term than ‘lazy’? Perhaps not :-) She has indeed turned the song around totally. Using the bridge both as intro and outro. The whole arrangement, the slower tempo, the beautiful piano, the touch of guitar and her melancholic voice makes me feel the sadness of the story. It is a sad story where love is being destroyed by distrust. She is is pleading to let love continu but she is also dead set on that things must change, so in the end I think she is resigned it won’t last. Elvis’ version, a cover as well, is much more upbeat. He is a master showman and his version was and is a joy to listen to and watch. Listening to this version his tone, makes me wonder how distraught he really was being caught in an inescapable trap :-) There is a lot to take in, in the visuals as well. She comes in uncovering beautiful pieces from the past including a little puff of dust with the piano and she is bringing them into the present. Her cousins and her sister, all dressed in white dresses like she used to wear: it gives me the feeling of her growing up. Than of course there are all the Elvis’ imagery: her rhinestone boots, the microphone, the Priscilla beehive, the 1968 comeback tour black leather suit and red guitar. Also the suit Rob Christie is wearing (and he is slaying it at the piano) fits that era. It all fits so well together!

Great job Jennifer, I really enjoy how you express your appreciation for Angelina. The two little girls are her Uncle Mike's kids (her cousins) and the older one is her sister Juliette. Their symbolic meaning is unclear (at least to me) as is the uncovering of the furniture. Also, her hairdo is a nod to Presilla's beehive, and the leather suit and guitar harken to the Elvis 1968 comeback tour where he performed this. Angelina's version is quite different but I offer that maybe her approach better portrayed the angst, doubt, hopefulness, and fatigue of the story better than either Elvis or Mark James' original. Their versions were faster and more upbeat (maybe they were more constrained by the beat-driven approach prevalent in the times). But the story is not an upbeat one, describing as it does a relationship that could make it but that probably won't due to distrust. I'm curious to ask you what you learn from Angelina, if anything? After these many reactions of her, what surprises you?

Yeah! She’s something special, isn’t she? Pure Velvet Perfection! This vocal arrangement was all Angelina, I have no doubt in collaboration with a stellar team including Rob Christie & Mery Zamani her Grandmother. She is a Master Storyteller. The video is shot in the same Antique Store that she did 'My Funny Valentine' on Valentine’s Day. I believe it is in LA near her home. I believe the girls in the video represent Angelina's Journey from infancy to present through the classics of music history. Thus the Antique store, She grew up studying and performing these classics. Did you notice that right foot raise it''s heal to cradle the guitar a couple of times in the performance. I was waiting for her to throw in a little shake to it in homage to the King. Could that have been intentional? That is Rob Christie on piano. Sister Juliette and a couple of Uncle Michael's Babies. I think that makes them cousins not nieces. Full Black Leather Bodysuit, the guitar from his concert in 68 and the hair a homage to Priscilla Presley. Yeah! She can bring tears to your eyes. Epic. Incredible. There are no words. Epic! Wow, Wow, Wow! Could it be more Beautiful? ♥👣👸🏻🎷 Yeah she doing a Concert in Norway this month! Album to drop soon! So much to look forward to.♥👣👸🏻🎷

Jennifer, I very much appreciate your insights into the music you react to. While I haven't a musical bone in my body (including the inner ear); and, as my mother used to say--couldn't carry a tune in a bucket; still there's something In song I respond strongly to. Much of your technical explanations are over my head (I tend to choke on the glottal ones), but I sometimes get the gist; and, if not the point, a least a thump. What I really respond to is the emotional content of the words and music. Which brings me to a suggestion: would it be possible for you to also explain (to a degree, at least) how someone like Angelina can move so many people to tears with her music. I realize, of course, that as we all respond differently to music that there is no one simple answer and that the attempt would be fraught with pitfalls. I am an eighty-five year old male, and while I have enjoyed and often been moved by music (from classical to country--so far not by rap), none has quite affected me the way Angelina has. I thrill to the songs of Dimash, but I am not moved in quite the same way. Again, I realize I'm making a somewhat unreasonable request, but would greatly appreciate an attempt in that direction. Thanks again for your insights.
