You said it exactly... If you're going to do a cover, don't do it like the original. Angelina is so great at taking existing songs and making them into new songs. She's never trying to be 'better' than the original, she's only ever trying to honor the message of the original in her own special ways. She takes the lyrics of a song and she sings them in the way that she feels them. She relates them to her own life and experiences. This is what make her such an authentic artist. This is what draws us in and holds us there for a couple minutes while she sings.

Great analysis. I’ve listened to this many times in the past few days, and it’s hypnotically beautiful. What I’ve noticed after many plays is the symmetry: the soft piano is the intro and the outro. Also, Angelina starts and ends with the same verse, and it’s not how Elvis starts: “Oh, let our love survive…”. And she sings that verse differently each time, from that stunning opening where she really leans into the lyrics with such strength and volume to the ending where it’s very breathy, melancholy, and personal. She tells a story like no one else, and her voice is just stunning in every genre.

H, about the piano. You're hearing Rob Christie's perfectly tuned, miked and equalized piano from his home studio as shown in Angelina's "Million Miles" and "Easy on Me" videos. In another life, he was a classically trained pianist. Now he is head of Republic Records LA studio and Angelina's musical mentor. He is dressed here in a costume worn by Elvis' backup band in his comeback special.

@@HofTheStage Yeah, I play piano as well and have seen some amazing pianists that play extremely difficult songs like Chopin well. But I've never seen anyone handle a simple tune with the feeling like Rob does in all these songs he's done with Angelina. Many listeners equate good singing with the belting of high notes and good piano with fast and intricate pieces. These two haven't gotten caught up in such expectations and give us delicate and intimate music that is all about eliciting a feeling.

What a glorious production, praise to everyone involved, so perfect for Angelina Jordan she rules the universe with her talent. Again, the great talent of Rob Christie playing the piano. The Cinemaphotography, a total MASTERPIECE. Great touch, the cousins and sister get a cameo. Mery, you should be so proud, AJ's grandma produced this. Excellent ART Cole McCarthy! (This red guitar is identical to the one Elvis played in his 1968 concert on TV.) Oh, the tears, and loss of breath, she is like no other in the universe. Here is a classic example of what this ethereal talent, Angelina Jordan, can achieve she takes a mundane song and turns it in to phenomenal classic. Angelina at 16 is the MASTER of her universe, she is top priority for both Stargate, and Rob Christie Republic Records Studio Director at Universal Music Group Manhattan Beach, California. Rob has been playing the piano on most of AJ's studio production performances. AJ's voice has been unique since she was 7 years old and now at 16, she controls us as an audience, leaving us hang on every word and phrase. She has written a number of songs.

Angelina is a breath of fresh air! Huge artists can sing their heart out, b I do not feel it. I often don’t even get the meaning of the song/lyrics. She gets me from her first note, and she has actually taken us on a musical journey these years from she was 7-9. Would u consider analyzing I put a spell on you? How is it possible to produce such rich, deep vocals. She is now 178 cm on her feet, at 16. You are right! Art. I feel as her voice is the brush & I am the canvas, she actually paints a picture in my head. It is a complete joy how she covers old classics. Never thought it would be possible that a cover is better than the original. So this is about her. Here, she tells the story behind Elvis’ Suspicious minds. Nothing is out of place, from the Blue suede shoes, uncovering old treasures, the attire, the Priscilla hairdo down to the pianist. Ps: she told in an interview yesterday that her goal is to portray the meaning of everything she sings. With only her voice, piano, guitar and extremely good microphones, we can enjoy the voice and each instrument. She must be a treasure chest for professionals, and already so many pro musicians wants to work w her. Also, she writes and paints. She makes her own sketches and get them turned into clothes. She says that what she wears when performing, must visually match the song, so this is not something they pick up in stores. Like the beautiful gown at Allsang på Grensen, I have nothing- …

The tribute to everything Elvis in this was amazing. The black outfit and the red guitar he used in his 1968 comeback concert, to the Priscilla hairstyle. Rob Christie the Grammy Award winning Studio Director for Republic Records wearing the red suit like the back up singers as he once again played piano for Angelina. I have seen comments about Blue Suede shoes, but after watching this at least a hundred times, I can't find them. All I see are silver/gray sparkly boots. I also have seen different "opinions" as to the meaning of having her cousins and sister in the video, but until someone can produce something to back that, it's just opinion/speculation. I was never a big Elvis fan, but this young lady has "re-invented" many songs that I never cared for or just wouldn't listen to, and made them some of my favorites.

@AngelinasDarkAngel, I can relate to one part of your comment. Never being in the popular clique. I wasn't in any clique 50 years ago, so never really concerned myself with what others thought since then. It's not an opinion, I see what I see. At the 0:11 mark of the original video, as she strolls in I see silver gray boots. At the 0:21 mark before she pull the cloth from the piano, I get a glimpse of what I see as a silver gray boot. At the 2:14 mark as she sits on the sofa or whatever that was called by the upper class back then, I see silver gray boots. Now in this one, I can possibly convince myself they are two different shades, but I still can't see blue suede. It is possible that my prescription on my glasses needs strengthened, but as much attention that was taken to the suit, the guitar, the hair style and Rob Christie's red suit, all paying tribute to Elvis's Comeback Concert from 1968, I can't see why they would have stuck blue suede shoes from 1956 or 1960 in to this video. I could be wrong, but just like the rumor that goes around about why her demo of "I'm Still Holding Out For You" was never released, until something is shown to back that up, to me it's someone's opinion, since she has sang other songs before and after dealing with suicide and death. And yes, that is my opinion.

What a rendition! Her Gandma Mery produced this. Looks like she used the same store she used for her My Funny Valentine video! Her sister Juliette was the older girl. The 2 younger girls are her Uncle Mike's kids, and, 2 time Grammy winner Rob Christie on piano. What a great cover! The beehive hairstyle was to honor Priscilla Presley and the time period she met Elvis. The red guitar is the same model Elvis used. I was not expecting this! Funny thing is, this was almost 4 minutes, but it flew by and felt short! Going to listen to it again! 16 years old….Wow!!! What a performance!

If she maintains this progression in 10 years she will be able to enchant the audience of a theater for two hours alone on the stage, where her statuary and charismatic presence is enough to fill it, accompanying herself with the guitar or the piano. Hypnotizing the audience by telling them old and new stories and making them live a unique mystical experience. Of Angelina it has been said that she is the reincarnation of various artists of the past, for me she is the reincarnation of the ancient and mythical bards.

This arrangement was all Angelina, I have no doubt. She is a Master Storyteller. I believe the girls in the video represent Angelina's Journey from infancy to present through the classics of music history. Thus the Antique store, She grew up studying and performing these classics. Did you notice that right foot raise it''s heal to cradle the guitar a couple of times in the performance. I was waiting for her to throw in a little shake to it in homage to the King. Could that have been intentional? That is Rob Christie on piano. Sister Juliette and a couple of Uncle Michael's Babies. I think that makes them cousins not nieces. Full Black Leather Bodysuit, the guitar from his concert in 68 and the hair a homage to Priscilla Presley. Yeah! She brings tears to your eyes don't she? Epic. Incredible. There are no words. Epic! Wow, Wow, Wow! Could it be more Beautiful? ♥👣👸🏻🎷 Yeah she doing a Concert in Norway this month! Album to drop soon! So much to look forward to.♥👣👸🏻🎷

Elvis' version is great and it always was, and it still is one of my favorites. but Angelina's version is equally great and is definitely her own. When I first heard this song I loved it and put it at #3 on my playlist (Angelina Jordan Playlist by Terry M.), about midday I moved it up to #1. The main thing that changed my mind was the power in her voice. I'm not talking about loudness I'm talking about the power she has regardless of how loud or soft she sings. This is a quality that I haven't heard from anyone in my 82 years. This voice has become so unique that it is totally unmatched.

Many are still noted in our time, such as the Oracles at Delphi in Greece, the Chief Oracle of Tibet, and the Oracles of ancient Egypt, but there are countless examples. Great reaction. New sub. My theory is she reads the lyrics to a song first before hearing the music. This allows her to understand what the artist is trying to express. Then she does the best arrangement to allow her to squeeze the most emotion and soul out of that song while respectfully sharing the original artists message. And yes she is the greatest hummer in the world.

Very good analysis. I first started listening to Elvis in the late fifties as a kid and knew him as a fun rock and roller and then watched as he became more mature in his choice of material. Suspicious Minds was of course a pinnacle of his work as a "singles" artist. That having been said I also always thought that Elvis' version on this song was something of a victim of over production. I think by this time in his career he was such a legend that everyone wanted to put their stamp on an Elvis single and his version had perhaps too many bells and whistles. In particular I always thought the backup vocals on Elvis' version were a little overcooked. Of course, it went on to become one of his biggest #1 hits so you can't dispute that it was a monster single. That brings us to Angelina's version. I agree with you 100% when you say that if you can't improve on the original it's best to leave it alone. This demonstrates Angelina's bravery as an artist. Not only does she take on the challenge, but she seems totally undaunted and unintimidated by the iconic nature of the original. Second, she strips away all the bells and whistles of the original production and slows down the tempo from the original version's more "rock" feel and gives it almost but not quite a straight jazz feel. This allows the beauty of the lyrics and melody of the original to shine through. This demonstrates Angelina's wonderful sense of understanding the essence of a song. I'm sure the original composer of the song would approve. Third is her choice of just piano and voice with the minimal use of guitar. This shows her talent at arranging. I can't think of the pianist's name but I know he's a Grammy winner. Ths brings me to my fourth point. The pianist here is what used to be known as an accompanist. If you watch videos of great solo performances by vocalists in the past where they are performing live the piano player becomes part of the performance and interacts in subtle ways with the singer. I would bet that this was recorded in one take and that interaction was going on in this performance. Lastly as I've listened to this version a few times it struck me that the little flourishes she adds to the ends of some of the verses have a very gospel feel and gospel was one of the roots of Elvis' musical upbringing and she would only know that if she had listened to his early work with the Jordanaires, which I bet she has. And one last thing that doesn't have to do with the musical production. I wonder what it would be like if she had been growing up in the sixties and her and Elvis could have done a duet in this stripped-down style. I would give a million dollars to know Elvis' opinion of Angelina's version of his greatest work. I think the reason that her version is so brilliant is that her sense of slyle has really matured into something unique and that is something that she has in common with Elvis who is one of the greatest song stylists of all time. This maturing sense of style is what makes Angelina's version so powerful and shows us that she's not just a great singer but that she's a great artist as well.

What Elvis had as a bridge between Angelina's book ends she started it out in power mode and then she finished it off and total word by word emotion mode. The part that Elvis normally starts out with fast it's fast about being caught in a trap ends up becoming her core as I believe.... The really is the bridge. And of course all this leaves you seriously wanting MORE !!!

Thank you for another excellent and heartfelt reaction to Angelina. The song was written by Mark James. In the Wikipedia entry of the origins of the song, he is said to have remarked "That late one night, he was fooling around on his Fender guitar and using his Hammond organ pedals for a bass line and came up with what he thought was a catchy melody. At the time, he was married to his first wife but still had feelings for his childhood sweetheart, who was married back in Houston. James's wife had suspicions about his feelings. He felt it was a confusing time for him and that all three were "caught in this trap that they could not walk out of." and, in my mind, Angelina's rendition is much truer to the lyrics than any other singer, including Elvis. The children appearing in the video were Angelina's cousins - daughters of her uncle Michael Astar, and then her sister Juliette. I would hazard a guess that they were included to emphasise that children are very important to Angelina and her family. Confession! I have never been a great fan of Elvis Presley, although I do like some of his earlier recordings, and I had never heard of the song "Suspicious minds" but knew that Angelina would completely take ownership of it, and she did. It was beautiful. After listening to it several times, I decided to download the lyrics to see whether she kept to the original structure. She didn't, and the song is all the better for it. I paste below the order in which Angelina sung the verses. "Suspicious minds" Angelina Jordan - lyrics rearranged. (1) Oh let our love survive I'll dry the tears from your eyes Let's don't let a good thing die When honey, you know I've never lied to you (2) We're caught in a trap I can't walk out Because I love you too much baby (3) Why can't you see What you're doing to me When you don't believe a word I say? (4) We can't go on together With suspicious minds And we can't build our dreams On suspicious minds (5) So, if an old friend I know Stops by to say hello Would I still see suspicion in your eyes? (6) Here we go again Asking where I've been You can't see these tears are real I'm crying (Yes, I'm crying) (7) We can't go on together With suspicious minds And we can't build our dreams On suspicious minds (8) Oh let our love survive I'll dry the tears from your eyes Let's don't let a good thing die When honey, you know I've never lied to you

Rob Christie Playing Piano: That dude playing the piano is Rob Christie Republic Records Studio Director at Universal Music Group Manhattan Beach, California, and he has been working with AJ since she signed with the largest record company in the world at the age of 14, two years ago. Rob was the MC of AJ Christmas Show that aired Dec 23, of 21. AJ’s Christmas Show that live-streamed on Dec 23 of 21 had some of the most important musicians of our time: Frank Sinatra's drummer for 6 years, and sun in-law of the late Henry Mancini, Greg Field has won 9 Grammys, and the bass player, Chuck Berghofer who also played for Sinatra for 6 years, and toured with Barbara Streisand, accompanied AJ on her Christmas Show, and they stated that she had the "storytelling ability of the greats, Streisand, Fitzgerald, Vaughan, including Sinatra, to name a few. The main pianist, a five-time nominated for Grammys, Shelly Berg, stated in all his years working with the greatest vocalist, he had never encountered a talent like AJ. Did I forget to mention Jimmy Z, the famous Sax Player who worked with Rod Steward, Etta James, the Eurythmics, and Doctor Dre, was part of the band for the show? Jimmy stated that AJ was the best he has ever played for. Rob Christie Republic Records Studio Director at Universal Music Group Manhattan Beach, California played the guitar, and was the MC of the show. (I can't list the complete backgrounds on all the band members because it would take several pages to do them justice.) Angelina stated that she would rather perform than take a breath, and she has never been forced to perform, it has been her decision.

From this all hher releases sound like we’ve been listening our whole lives. Instant solid classics. Even her original new works are firmly grounded in great songwriting disciplines.
