VOICE COACH REACTS | MAMAMOO... Killing Voice (Dingo Music) | just harmonise my life why don't you

Welcome!
Today's video will be reaction/breakdown of kickass girl group MAMAMOO Killing Voice on Dingo Music. I cannot wait to dive into this with you as it's been a long time coming. I'm hoping I can be both analytical and a blatant fangirl at the same time.
If you enjoyed this video please like, sub and hit the bell (if you want to).

It's been a long time coming. Gosh I love this group... Also, during the editing process i kept listening to Hwasa and I have the tiniest suspicion she may have actually been sick during this performance (can anyone confirm or deny this for me?). I will most likely be thinking about this long into the night.

Yeah she was a bit sick during this shoot. We guess it was because she was working too much (before her maria comeback she was filming for ILA/YoEunPa variety show, then after maria she's still filming for that variety show and the project group refund sisters, then there comes mamamoo's comeback) without rest. And we just found out earlier this year that she lost her grandma during aya promotions so she must really be tired and stressed

I wonder too, but I think Hwasa's false vocal folds always have something to contribute, so it is hard to say. Even when they're messing about they demonstrate such commitment to the vocal, I'm always impressed. They are so solid the way they just seem to lock into that committed, competent and yet still vulnerable place I imagine one has to go to make music so consistently emotionally engaging. Love your fan-woman-ing and enthusiasm for Mamamoo in addition to your coaching chops.

I know of only 2 groups that are close to Mamamoo in vocals (they are the best), one of them is Dreamcatcher who are experts at mixing genres and put a lot of rock-adjacent and metal sounds with their vocals. They've got great concepts, top visuals to support the m/v's especially recently, NEVER sing songs about boys (in 4 1/2 years they have zero of those) and explore all other genres in b-sides. Dreamcatcher - Piri or Boca are a good introduction, Endless Night is full J-metal, BEcause their recent release (closer to drum & bass style with more vocals).

As people have said, Hwasa was sick during this. It's also worth noting when you talk about vocal work load and her stylistic choices, she was doing the Mamamoo comeback, also performing with Refund Sisters, and preparing her Solo stages of Maria for the back to back award shows from Nov-Jan all at this time. As for Solar, she stated that some of these songs they hadn't sung in a while, and that she really wanted to be flawless, with a lot of nerves going into it. Would you say that could contribute to how she approached I Miss You in this particular live set? I always notice how she loosens up after that song is done like the hardest work is over.

To also add, she hurt her back really badly just a week before her Maria comeback, she couldn’t move for one day and even two days before her first performance, she could barely walk. She was in the hospital for a few days I believe but in the reality show ‘I live alone’ you can see her struggle and how she would practice her dance while laying down on her couch :( While doing mamamoo & refund sisters she still had to be very careful with her back and it still hurt, I believe she had a herniated disk?

'Clown' to 'Crown' is not a world play. It is Korean/Japanese accent. Those two languages don't have the hard 'L' sound in a beginning of a word, so it comes out more like 'R' sound a lot of times. You can see that happening in older Playstation commercials. 'Praystashong', they say. I know it was done intentionally, but it happens a lot in real life.

Like Sinthia said, I think it was a play on the accent, since the two words end up sounding the same in the Koreanized version of the English clown. I remember watching someone talk about how there are English words that have been added to Korean vocabulary but with a Korean sound. I imagine that was the point when writing/choreographing Aya.

Their friendship and excellent mutual relations are one of the most important assets of their music. This is another, almost ethereal level of harmonization in every dimension. Interesting how you mentioned that Hwasa may experience more fatigue than the other members due to her utilization of her styling. Hwasa is known for being a very chill and relaxed person who gets tired easily, and she even spoke about how she is always tired. In moments in a show called Boss In The Mirror, you can catch scenes of Hwasa laying down because of how easily her energy is spent. So I found it interesting you mentioning that her vocal style can even cause her to feel more fatigued than the others.

I was just saying that it’s interesting that Katrinka said her to vocal style may cause some fatigue because Hwasa out of the members is already a chill and low energy person. Something I have noticed about K-pop groups in general and Mamamoo in particular is that they are more relaxed about mixing timbres even during tight harmonies. In traditional choral, even for barbershop, there has always been a strong emphasis on sounding alike. Mamamoo does that to a point, but mainly they realize that accurate pitch harmonies and volume matching is more important than matching timbres. Red Velvet is another group that does not try too hard to match timbres.

Nice observation. You’re totally right. There is a reason why too. Mostly it’s due to the difference in the roles/goals comparing a vocal group comprised of soloists and a choir who are trying to sound like one seamless voice. First is the style, they are actually doing a great job matching in a contemporary vocal set up so that it still sounds epic but at the same time, they’re belting like soloists, something you won’t find a choir doing. A choir uses a choral (classical based) vocal set up to achieve their sound and goal. So the vocal set up but also the responsibility of each vocalist is different. They’re using the build in intensity in their belt to create an awesome big sound (I can guarantee for the recorded ‘backing vocal’-esque vocals however that the person mixing and mastering would have gone through and made sure they weren’t clashing in timbre and still sound as seamless as possible... different goal in those vocals again).

I'm pretty sure Hyejin was sick that day, with a bit of a flu. They had an interview segment before they went on stage that day and if you're used to listening to her speaking voice, it becomes quite obvious that she was down with something. Also, yeah, Wheein's famous "KASEUM!!!" x) LOL. Thanks for this. It definitely made my afternoon better =)

I can imagine if Julia reacted to all of the Mamamoo videos she watched, this channel would turn into a moomoo channel. By the way I love how Moonstar plays around with the timing in her raps. So good. Hwa sa does have a tendency to do too much in the way of work load, from one project to another, although RBW does try to get them to rest and not over work them, all of this work they do individually is voluntary,

GISEUM! (Breasts!) Wheein will never live that one down and we wouldn't have it any other way. 🤣🤣 You didn't pick it up but Hwasa was indeed sick with a cold that day so maybe that's where the phlegmy effect came from. I thought it was interesting to hear her manage her voice du jour and use it creatively rather than fighting it. I have no way of knowing how much post-production effects were a part of this video but it seems pretty clear there were times when there was more than just reverb going on, such as doubled words and phrases to achieve some of the things we hear on the original recording. One of my favorite moments is during Starry Night when Wheein supplies her own delay effect by repeating Bam ... bam and then turns to Hwasa and laughs at what she did (Hwasa didn't notice). I didn't notice the clown/crown pronunciation issue and tho the line "You got me jumping like a crazy clown" is a strange image for a breakup song it's no less strange than some of the other things going on in that song and MV. I have lots of theories about Aya but that's not one of them. 😏 Their bff chemistry is so magical it's alchemical. MMM believes they were fated to be best friends regardless of whether they were in MMM together or even whether they were singers, hence songs like Destiny and 4X4ever. Since you're having fun with their off stage videos have a look at the MMM-TV episode from their rookie days called How Mamamoo Plays in the Car if you haven't seen it yet.

30:00 in korean the letter equivalent to an "r" and an "l" sound is the same (ㄹ), so I believe that's the reason they pronounce "clown" as "crown" and it ends up having a double meaning with the crown thingy they make with their hands while singing that. I just think it's a language thing between english and korean.

In Elementary school I was introduced to some foreign languages (about second grade or third grade, so I was 7 or 8 years old). The teachers who came in were each only there for a couple of weeks at a stretch so they did not teach nearly enough and the class did not learn nearly enough. Really just enough to peak interest or turn the interest off; let people know whether they ever wanted to even try to pursue languages on their own. I don't remember names or what order these teachers visited us in (it has been decades since and my memory is shot these days) but there was German, French and Spanish for two weeks at a time, not concurrent. The German language intimidated me for a day because of the Rolling R's. I brought this up to Mom that day after school and she laughed. Then she explained that she could not roll her R's to save her life, she had TRIED to do that her ENTIRE LIFE and simply could not get the tongue to do what she wanted. But she KNEW without a doubt that I could roll my R's because she had heard me playing with toy cars. Apparently when I was REALLY small, my favorite sound to make for 'engine noise' for the cars was by rolling my R's. Basically, she told me to go play as if I was a Pre-Kindergartner and eventually I would remember how to make that sound on my own. And she said she was already proud of me because she is not the one who taught me to make that noise, she literally COULD NOT have ever taught me to because she did not have the ability; I had discovered how to do it all on my own before I could even walk. So I went and played and figured it out (partially by Cerebral Memory and partially by Muscle Memory, putting in the same practice that allowed me to discover my ability to make the sound in the first place). I went to school the next day fully ready for German lessons. After that, Mom wanted me to try to teach her how. lol
