I think part of their magic is their unselfishness. They each pass the lead around like an Olympic baton, and the support the “new” lead with perfect backup. They all have incredible voices, but their ability to not try blast out over the other members is noteworthy.

Avi, the guy with the beard, is their bass. He's the one making the sounds that appear to be a rhythm bass playing behind them. He's also making sounds like wind crimes. Kevin, the black guy, is their beatboxer. He's the one doing the kicks, the stomps, and all the other percussive sounds. He's also the one in the group with perfect pitch. That means everyone else is taking their cues from the metronome that he represents. The other three are Scott, the first guy, their baritone. He covers the bass whenever Avi takes lead, unless that lead is actually sung in bass. Not very likely. Then there's Kirstie. She's a mezzo-soprano. She is also their most accomplished belter, and the most likely to go into belt. Then finally, the guy with the big hat and angelic voice is Mitch. He's a countertenor, the highest of the male classifications. Personally I think he's capable of reaching coloratura soprano, which is the highest of the frmale classifications. That's a fair thumbnail sketch of the group.

An introduction to Pentatonix for you: Scott: the tall blonde guy in the middle with the first solo. He's the baritone of the group but has a range of about 4 octaves. He's just as comfortable harmonizing on the high notes as he is taking the bass line when Avi is singing. Speaking of which... Avi: the guy with the beanie and the second solo. He's an amazing opera trained bass and doesn't have many solo parts but he always kills it when he does sing. He left the group in 2017 on good terms with the rest of the members and helped find his replacement, Matt. Kirstin: the only female in the group, she had the third solo. She has the least solos of the main 3 that you'll find, but she always kills it when she does sing(examples are Say Something, Sound of Silence, Imagine, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, all of which are among their best work) Mitch: He's the man with the amazing voice and the final solo in this song. He's a tenor, and has a purely angelic voice. He also has an amazing range, I've heard 5 octaves before. Kevin: an AMAZING beatboxer, that's his main role, but he occasionally shows off his beautiful tenor voice (Imagine is a great example) and his skills with the cello, which he can play while beatboxing simultaneously. Pentatonix got their start on an old competition show called the Sing Off where acapella groups competed against each other for a $200,000 cash prize and a recording contract. Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch sang in choir together in school and have been best friends since they were teenagers. They found Avi through a friend and Kevin through one of his "cello boxing"(playing the cello and beatboxing) videos that went viral. They won the competition, you can still find the performances on KZread. It's amazing to watch them grow throughout the show. Unfortunately, the record label dropped them shortly after they moved out to make music, so they persevered and self produced for a while until they were picked up by another label. They are the only acapella group to ever win a Grammy, and they have won 3: for their Daft Punk medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene ft. Dolly Parton. They're an amazing group, every one of them is one of the most talented singers in the world, and they have never released a bad song imo. Yes they do sound the same live, and yes it is all acapella. They never use instruments except for the occasional use of a cello when they feel it enhances the song (like their covers of Radioactive, Say Something, and Perfect). They have a rule that if they can't do it live they can't release it. I recommend all 3 songs above, Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Sound of Silence, and anything else you want to hear! Their Grammy winners are all insanely good, as is their new album of all original songs. Welcome to musical heaven!

They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America's Got Talent as non-competitors a couple of years after that. The members are (in order of solos in this video) Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range as heard during his solo); Kirstin "Kirstie" Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); Mitch Grassi (little guy in the hat, a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world-class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre-med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZread, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC-based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi's performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZread videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello-Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re-arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five-piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZread), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn't think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZread, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super-viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony's top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best-selling genre), and have had multi-platinum album sales, sold-out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) was brought in as the new bass singer in early 2018. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.

Welcome to the world of Pentatonix, or PTX for short. Get ready for a quick boost to your channel from their rabid fans who call ourselves “Pentaholics”. Here is my quick intro to the group for new fans. PTX is a five member “a Capella” (without instruments) vocal band formed in 2011 for the NBC television reality competition show “The Sing Off”. The original members are “the trio”, who went to high school together in Arlington, Texas made up of: SCOTT HOYING, male, 6’3”, usually blond, sings baritone, but has a wide vocal range and covers the bass line of songs when the normal bass is singing a lead. MITCH GRASSI, male, 5’10”, normally black hair but has changed body mass, wardrobe and hair style so much in videos he’s often mistaken for different people. Mitch has an amazingly high range (contra tenor) that some mistake for a second female voice. KIRSTIN MALDONADO, female, 5’4”, natural hair color is black but changes it often in videos. Kirsti (rhymes with “thirsty”) sings mezzo soprano and, for a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Added to “the trio” for the show were: AVI KAPLAN, male, 5’11”, long dark hair, beard, usually wears a knit hat of some kind. Avi is a classically trained “basso profundo”. He provides the vocal bass line as well as added vocal percussion but often uses his upper registry to sing vocal leads in a number of arrangements. Avi is the ONLY member of the band that has change. He left on good terms in 2017 for reasons related to conflicting demands of the band’s touring schedule and his personal/family commitments. KEVIN OLUSOLA male, 6’1”, black, changing hair style, is known as “KO” and was asked to join PTX to provide vocal percussion after Scott watched a KZread video of him “cello boxing” (beatboxing while playing his cello). KO is the classic over achiever of the group. He plays Cello, Piano, and Saxophone all at concert levels. He graduated pre-med from Yale, speaks Spanish and spent over a year in China where he became fluent in Chinese. He sings Tenor but vocals were not his strong suite when he started so he worked with other band members and a vocal coach until while on tour he would perform the featured vocals in "if I ever fall in love", (originally performed by guest artist Jason Derulo for the album and video). He also writes and produces music both individually and for the group. So, KO is more than “just the beatboxer”. The most recent member and the only change in the group’s membership is: MATT SALLEE, male, 5’9” black with usually close-cut black hair. Matt replaced Avi Kaplan in 2017 to provide vocals, vocal bass and percussion. Matt can be heard using his exceptional upper vocal range to provide a rich tenor/baritone lead often ending with a slide down to a deep bass punch. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. The only exception is they may deliberately use Auto-Tune when they cover songs where it was used in the original and is key to the sound of that song. An example is "90's Dance Medley" when they use it in Cher’s, “Believe”. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage. Enjoy the ride.

Avi Kaplan is the greatest bass singlet alive today! He is a master and if you listen he is flowing all through this song. It is the foundation that fills in the beauty of this song. I like everything about Pentatonix but the older songs with Avi on the bass are my absolute favorites!

If Mitch’s voice catches you, check out both versions of ‘Aha!’, the live and the video, video first for clarity. Avi was the major bass and bass tones, now its Matt. Scott backs up the bass when Avi or Matt is singing. And Kevin is just a damn genius in everything he does, period. Kirstin is a angelic dynamo who is finally spotlighting more.

A brief introduction to Pentatonix: A five member acapella group formed in 2011. They sing covers of pop songs and have several Christmas albums in their catalog. They've also put out two albums of original material, one just released February 12, 2021 (The Lucky Ones). The original band members were Scott, Kirstin (Kirstie), Mitch, Kevin and Avi. Of these five, four are still in the group. Avi left the group in 2017 and was replaced with Matt. They've won multiple awards including three Grammys. While acappella since forming the group, they occasionally introduce instruments such as piano (played by Scott) and cello (played by Kevin). They've also included instrumentals played by featured guests. Most of their 'instrumental sounds' however, are created by Kevin, their very talented beatboxer along with baselines performed by Matt and Scott. While performing as a five-member group, they also have individual works worth investigating. There's so much more info 'Pentaholics' can add to this list. Just ask and they will respond. Enjoy!

This is not a song ‘to the lord’. Leonard Cohen wrote this song to an ex-lover. It uses religious imagery from the Old Testament - the stories of Bathsheba and David, and Samson and Delilah, two very sexual stories. Cohen is singing about the disappointment of unrequited romantic love, and orgasms. There is sexual innuendo throughout. This song also includes doubt about the existence of a god. Pentatonix omitted those particular verses.

Loved this! 💙 so there is Kirstin (ker-stin) the girl of the group with an incredible voice. Scott (my personal fav) the blonde guy who sang first is a baritone but takes over bass when the bass are singing. If you go back and listen you can hear it he does absolutely amazing, he is so versatile! Mitch is the one with the hat and high voice who has an amazing voice and is usually everybody’s favorite lol. Kevin, the only one who didn’t sing a solo in this is the beatboxer, but he is a man of many talents. He can also play the cello which you do see in a few PTX videos to showcase some of his many talents, including cello-boxing where he plays cello and beatboxes at the same time! However, he can sing he is actually a tenor and sounds incredible! Lastly, Avi (white guy with a beard and hat) is the bass and yes he did the lows you heard, with the exception of Scott doing it when Avi has his solo. He is later (2017 I believe) replaced by Matt who is now the current bass and does just as amazing in my opinion. He is different, but amazing! He replaced him when Avi decided to leave the group for personal reasons but it was very peaceful, no drama or anything and everyone still gets along! Avi is the ONLY one who left the group but people sometimes get confused because Mitch and Kirstin change their looks a lot over the years and sometimes look like different people lol! 💙 hope this helps! Hope you do more PTX! I would check out their Evolution Of videos, they have quite a few and I feel like everyone really has a moment to shine in those!

Together Avi and Kevin are magic and were dubbed the "meat and potatoes" of the band way back when they competed in a singing competition called the sing off. The other 3 (the trio) grew up together in Texas. Scott Hoying(the tall blond baritone), Kirsten Maldanado ( the only female and mezzo-soprano) and Mitch Grassi(the tenor extraordinaire). You should watch them perform this live on their Christmas Special 2016. You wont believe it. Its truly amazing. I hope you will do more reactions of this talented group.
